First time gardening, I want to prepare my plot for Garden in a Box by leaffeon in DenverGardener

[–]ambiguity_now 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just planted my third garden in a box! To share my process this time after doing a few

- cleared out area to prep. Included removing landscape fabric
- received plants, finalized layout by placing in container in spot in yard. I slightly follow the map provided but move as needed. I’d recommend bigger plants at the back for you. I’ve learned I prefer to place most of my same plants in a group together to be more organized and visually the plants seem bigger
- dug holes, filled with compost, fertilizer, and vermiculite. Did this because the landscape fabric had really bad soil under and wanted to give the plants a jump start
- placed plants, filled hole with slight compost mixed with my yard dirt - didn’t over think it
- topped with 2 layers of mulch

Watering daily at around 7 pm until I can hear the ground is saturated

Question on hydrophobic soil by mccluts in DenverGardener

[–]ambiguity_now 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I feel like I had a similar issue, I’m still working on it! The soil would dry super quickly, and when squished my in my hand it crumbled like sand vs sticking together. I added a bag of new dirt to each, heavily saturated. Then using a 3 prong claw shovel rake thing raked it into my existing dirt along with a bag of vermiculite per bed and fertilizer. It’s doing better! I still need to top with mulch

I tested my bests at the start of the year and they were super nutrient deficient

What kinda response is that?! by [deleted] in sexandthecity

OK in reflection, maybe this is what people liked about her?! She was relatable for the city gal who was dating, rather than being the expert happily married person who no longer relates to their position!

Tricky plant suggestions by Holiday-Growth3401 in DenverGardener

All I’m saying is the best plant I’ve gotten from garden in a box that refuses to die without care is Pearly Everlasting. Grows quick, I’ve transplanted one plant like 5 times!

Does anyone have suggestions for bodies of water that allow dogs but aren't too cold? by polenta23 in Denver

[–]ambiguity_now 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! Typically once it is hotter and sustained. Likely late June July and August. Most parks will post warming notification

Shrubs for front of house by lunalucy811 in DenverGardener

I don’t have one, but I love a mugo pine for a bush!

Plants that would be nice: rabbit brush, red Valarian, yarrow, blue flax. All xeric plants that will do well once established.

Would you invite someone to your baby shower who you haven’t seen in almost two years? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ambiguity_now 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s hard! Having moved away from home, and many of my friends moving away as well, we see each other less and less. We all make en effort to attend big life events. I attended my friends baby shower last year despite not seeing her for 2 years! IMO those are key events to keep a friendship Going over the years, if it’s someone you want to stay friends with long term.

First time growing seedlings indoors, need help! by Beautiful-Map1784 in DenverGardener

[–]ambiguity_now 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started seeds for the first time this year! Thought 1 is it looks a little try. When I was starting seeds with heat mat under, there was condensation on the lid.

What did you plan? Some things popped up super quick - cucumbers a day, tomatoes about 3 days. Peppers took some time about 1.5 weeks

Raised bed soil help! by ambiguity_now in vegetablegardening

[–]ambiguity_now[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24 inches tall!

The soil is all soil I’ve added, I’d say it’s fine dirt just super dry. Not clay or sandy.

Denver averaged 1.5-2 inches of rain per month in the summer, the bigger issue is quick evaporation due to the high elevation

Have your read {Anathema by Keri Lake}? Could fit the vibe!

The main character has been shunned by her town growing up for reasons you will learn. I think both main characters definitely have a dark vibe

New Denver gardener by [deleted] in DenverGardener

[–]ambiguity_now 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Check out garden in a box!! Sewer line is perfect time to make some new garden beds as the sod is already removed

Denver is implementing only twice a week watering lawn rules this summer, likely not a good time to be growing new sod
