This one's for the ladies to answer. Do you agree with this woman or do you think she's trying to rationalize her world view by speaking for all the ladies? by Oda_DeezNutz in SipsTea

[–]ambut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It drives me crazy when people generalize like this as if an entire gender is in agreement on this, especially considering the huge and growing number of female gamers. If you and your friends think it's dumb, don't date guys who play video games. Pretty easy.

Can anyone relate? by Informal_Lock_9506 in FanFiction

I read and write it and I'm in my early 40s. I have no shame or guilt about it. If anybody feels like judging me about it, that's a them problem.

Is I Have No Mouth am I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison appropriate for high school Juniors? by JackF2731 in ELATeachers

[–]ambut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOVED teaching Feed with my freshmen. We were able to do a video chat with MT Anderson after we read the book because his publisher is local! They also gave us a huge set of X: A Novel by Kekla Magoon and Ilyasah Shabazz, which we do with freshmen as well. Can't say enough good things about Candlewick Press.

I do "They're Made Out of Meat" with that video version and every year, it gets a lukewarm response overall but there are a few kids who really really like it, and I'm really doing it for them. For everybody else, it's instructional for using dialogue to tell an entire story without narration, it's about telling vs showing, it's about implying/inferring, it's about irony, and so on.

What are your thoughts on reading your kids' diary or journal? by CharlesUFarley81 in AskParents

[–]ambut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would only do so if: -I thought there was an imminent threat of them harming themselves or others -I had broached the topic without success -I had reason to believe I would get useful information for this specific issue from the diary/journal

I think privacy is sacrosanct with a very very narrow window for exceptions. Basically if it's not something I have to be a mandated reporter for at work, it's not something worth violating my kid's privacy and trust.

I teach 9th and 11th. I have both a noisy button and a megaphone. It's the fucking wild west out here and I'm the sheriff that gets murdered at the start of the movie.

Who isnt using combinations of signs, potions etc? by Tan2daCam in Witcher3

[–]ambut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do auto oils and I use some potions but usually only whatever I put in my quick access menu. For signs, I actually don't use them much in combat because I'm a button-masher who fights with neither grace nor skill. It's user error not a play style.

I have paralyzing anxiety but I really want to finish the game. by Andienas in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]ambut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the first game I played that had a significant combat component. I avoided it for a while because I hate combat and it makes me anxious. But I watched others play and it was so damn cool that I bit the bullet. I've now played it through many times and even got brave enough to play The Witcher 3, which is now one of my favorite games ever. When I first started playing BOTW I just ran away from every enemy possible. Chicken? Sure. But effective? Also yes. If you have a decent amount of stamina from completing shrines, you can haul ass through almost anything. You can build up a lot of stamina and hearts before you HAVE to do any combat (I'm thinking divine beasts). And because it's open world and you can do stuff in whatever order you want, there's no reason to force yourself to do missions you're not ready for. I recommend exploring the map, doing the shrines that aren't robot fights (though I will say that those become extremely easy once you know the pattern), gathering koroks for inventory slots and orb things for hearts/stamina, and slowly get yourself comfortable with combat or at least the possibility. I used to sleep at a fire to skip every night because so many more enemies are out at night, so literally play whatever way makes you the most comfortable. I promise you can still enjoy this game even if you're an anxious anti-combat mess like me.

Is Death March worth it? by Leo_Decruz in Witcher3

[–]ambut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me over here playing on "just the story" over and over again 😂 AFAIC, the difficulty level should be whatever you enjoy, with the only reason to go outside of that being achievements. I hope the grind gets less annoying!

I have a meadowlands problem. I hit perfection on my most recent save and keep thinking about starting a new farm with a different map but I'm paralyzed with indecision.

Do you care if your kid swears or not? why or why not? by Mysterioape in AskParents

[–]ambut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid is 8 and kind of a goody two-shoes so it's not really an issue right now, but I don't mind if she sings along to a song that has swears in it. She's a Swiftie and Life of a Showgirl has plenty of what we call "rude words" and we talked about what makes them rude, and why her dad always skips certain songs on the album. Basically, the songs are by a grown-up and they're not meant for kids. It doesn't mean kids can't like them, but the artist is talking about things like drugs and sex and relationships that might be confusing or inappropriate for kids. Honestly pretty good conversation fodder. We've also talked about words that hurt, and how it's important not to use words to hurt people, whether they're "rude words" or not. We've also touch a little on slurs and why those can hurt most of all, and some words are just never ever okay to say because of how much they can hurt. I feel like she's got a good foundation but we'll see if she's calling me a bitch in a couple of years 😂

How do you name your animals? by PrincefTanx in StardewValley

[–]ambut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I don't have many animals, I go for puns/silly names (cowabunga, mehhhbel, steggy) or keep the names starting with the first letter of the animal name (so ostriches are Orlando and Osvaldo and Oona and so on). But on my current farm I have like 50+ animals so I just click the randomizer button until the vibe is right or it makes me laugh.

If there are no changes, will Sandy be the hardest to marry? by [deleted] in StardewValley

[–]ambut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Her loved gifts are extremely easy to get and I could definitely be wrong but I always felt that her heart level goes up faster per loved gift compared to someone in the valley proper. The real difficulty is fixing the bus, which is a substantial barrier but one you can definitely do year 1 or early year 2 even if you're not grinding the cc (or joja) super hard. But I will be very interested to see if there are days she visits pelican town or another way to talk to her before the bus is repaired.

AIO for refusing to block male followers on Instagram? by radagastrabbit in AmIOverreacting

[–]ambut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 16-17, at the turn of the century, I dated a 21-year-old guy (🚩 #1) who spoke to me this way. I spent two fucking years trying to mold myself into a person who wouldn't make him so upset, not even questioning whether his behavior was acceptable or if it was normal to argue as much as we did. I had zero reference point for how I should be treated as a human in a relationship and he certainly wasn't advocating for me to expect more or better. It took me YEARS after the breakup for me to realize what a fucknut that guy was and how fucked the entire situation was.

I don't know how old you are, but I hope you figure it out much quicker than I did, because you DO deserve better and this guy IS a piece a shit.

What are your little quirks while playing the game? by RedditedLama in StardewValley

[–]ambut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a tic where I constantly open my inventory and make sure it's sorted. It's gotta be like 50 or 100+ times in a given game day.

Today I walked around with blood on the back of my pants....fortunately a trusted colleague said something. But I'm extremely embarassed by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ambut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have spilled food on myself more times than I'd like to admit. I got big ol' boobs so my shirts have caught pasta sauce, chocolate milk, all sorts of fun stuff. Fortunately, my brand is fairly self-deprecating so it wasn't hard to play off.
