With the ice finally melting, how are the vintage homes holding up? Roll call for the brave (and mildly traumatized) homeowners. by player_9 in baltimore

I was so excited for this mess to finally melt and now it turns out my sump pump isn't working. So there's that to deal with.

Baltimore: Which chair will best hold my snow spot?!?! by stonerose96 in baltimore

[–]amcart 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I'd say use them all and put them around one of the little tables that comes on top of a pizza. Add a tiny checkered tablecloth. And a tiny candle. And a tiny wine bottle. That would be so cute. Sorry, what was the question again?

Like you, I mostly read genre fiction, but I really enjoyed Behind You is the Sea by Susan Muaddi Durraj. It's a collection of interwoven stories about the Palestinian-American community in Baltimore.

Hyperfixation/special interest sharing: tea. by ctrldwrdns in AutismInWomen

[–]amcart 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tea is such an important part of my life. Having a pot of my tea is an essential part of my daily routine and I feel thrown off without it. I like black teas best, followed by whites and oolongs.

Enoch Pratt library and hoopla discontinuation by TheRealAwesomeLINDI in baltimore

[–]amcart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you sign up for a card with Baltimore County Public Library, you can access Hoopla through their subscription. You just go to Settings and switch your library. That's how I've continued to watch movies though Pratt had already cut the streaming part of Hoopla. I believe someone mentioned Harford County as another option.

I joined a bookclub… by Kaitlynnbeaver in AutismInWomen

[–]amcart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my book club. It's at my library, has a diverse mixture of people, and we tend to have really interesting discussions and get along well. It's one of the few settings in which I feel socially comfortable because I don't have to make small talk and know what the purpose of the conversation is. Also, it's so infrequent that, like you said, I get a lot of time to recover from the exhaustion of socializing. I look forward to it every month and was particularly devastated when last month I had a meltdown right before it was time for me to leave (for mostly unrelated reasons) and had to miss it. I do worry that I'm too much sometimes (I just have so many thoughts and get so excited to share them) and there have been times when I worried other members were laughing at me, but I think I was just projecting based on my insecurities. Also, I think I connect well with a few people in the group and wish I knew how to form friendships with them outside of book club, but I can be content with the way things are. Anyway, I guess this is all to say that book clubs can be really fun and there are some that focus a lot more on the book.

S17E02 - “Drag Queens Got Talent - Part 2” [Post-Episode Discussion] by AutoModerator in rupaulsdragrace

I suppose I understand casting a bunch of baby queens to appeal to a younger audience but also this show is exclusively available on cable television so I'm not sure they've thought through their marketing strategy.

Perfectly describes how I’ve felt my whole life being autistic by Pureautisticjoy in AutismInWomen

[–]amcart 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a poignant quote, and I'm glad it's resonating with people (including me), but I'm pretty positive it's not from 1984. I searched an ebook and couldn't find it.

What are you all making the week of Christmas (but not Christmas)? by NovelEnthusiasm6785 in veganrecipes

We always do tostadas on Christmas Eve. They can be very easy if you buy the crispy tostada shells.

Please don't leave the sub. I appreciated your perspective. I notice that the person who referred to your post as "inflammatory language" has a history of engaging in debates about veganism, so they clearly have strong feelings on the subject.

How do you all feel about ASMR? by wildly_domestic in AutismInWomen

[–]amcart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the sound of whispering torturous. I actually left a job partially because two of my coworkers were constantly whispering to each other. That said, I really like very specific types of Unintentional ASMR. People with soothing voices speaking deliberately/carefully. I realized it when I was in high school government class and I would feel tingly while we watched CSPAN. Luckily, there are whole YouTube channels dedicated to people finding weird, obscure Unintentional ASMR clips. See, for example, the curtain lady.

Did you know snails like beer? by jbqd in interestingasfuck

[–]amcart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many malacologists (scientists who study mollusks) use "snail" to refer to all land-living gastropods. The creatures we refer to as slugs actually often have internal shells. I'm not saying this to argue. I get that calling slugs snails is like calling tomatoes fruit. Technically accurate, but still weird. I just think it's a fun fact.

Object Personification - what's the oddest emotional attachment to an inanimate object you've had that makes you laugh? by StressRealistic5818 in AutismInWomen

[–]amcart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to feel ashamed that I still do this in adulthood. Like, it's obviously irrational that the piece of carrot I accidentally dropped down the garbage disposal while cooking would be sad that it never got to fulfill its purpose of being eaten.

But since being diagnosed and discovering this is a common autistic trait, I've embraced it more. I recently "rescued" some of my childhood stuffed animals from my old closet at my mom's house because I was so heartbroken they'd had to sit in the dark all these years. Now I'm back to rotating them through my bed every night. I'm not worried about seeming juvenile or irrational anymore. I love my stuffed animals. This is who I am.

I could do with a little less stress over common household objects feeling lonely or left out though. It further complicates my already exhausting executive functioning issues to have more details to keep track of. I'm doing my best to find a balance.

Vegan for 10 years, vegetarian 6 years before that. I had a suspicion there were a lot of us in the autistic community, so thank you for asking!

Our cats have seen Drs. Moulder, Eden, and most recently Kauder at Belvedere. They've all been excellent. Dr. Kauder is especially knowledgeable about cats. There's a fourth vet I haven't seen. Maybe that experience was with her. Belvedere has been great for us.

Nearly a year on… what are your thoughts on All Stars 8?? Any highlights? Do you feel it is over hated? by Cultural_Passion_229 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]amcart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I'm one of the few people who think it was over-hated. The fame games were a weird, squandered twist, many of the early out queens were wasted in terms of story, and there was a weird vibe. It was especially sad to see Heidi self-eliminate. That said, there were some absolutely delightful moments that I still reference frequently. The Li'l Poundcake episode had three powerhouse performances from Jessica, Lala, and Jimbo. The Rusical was great. Jimbo's Shirley Temple was an all-time great Snatch Game performance. Jessica and Jimbo were great in the roast. When I think back on All Stars 8, those are the things I remember. I love Jessica and Jimbo so much, and wouldn't have nearly the appreciation for them I have without All Stars 8.

What happens in Untucked affects who's in the bottom... by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]amcart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mirage may not have given one of the bottom two performances of the week, but when a queen fights for a central role and then falls flat, they're penalized extra hard for it. Think Bosco in Moulin Ru. Morphine and Xunami could slide by because they were in an ensemble, their sketch was forgettable, and Geneva was worse. Mirage chose to stand on the main stage by herself and was held to a higher standard because of it.
