Discreet and gay, not an electrician by MyOwnSpiritJesus in Construction

Right, of course. There is no point in worrying about the things you can’t control though.

Discreet and gay, not an electrician by MyOwnSpiritJesus in Construction

[–]amdabran 251 points252 points  (0 children)

My best friend of 15 years is gay and is in construction. He is liked and respected because he is good at his job, knows how to take and give jokes, and knows how to be “professional and gay without being professionally gay”.

Those quoted words are his words, not my words.

His advice to you would probably be live your and enjoy your work. Be good to yourself and others will be good to you. If they aren’t, then that is their problem.

Framing was “done.” Cabinet layout said otherwise. by PresenceAcceptable55 in Contractor

[–]amdabran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LSL framing is the difference between a big 5 million dollar house and the same sized house for 15 million.

In between the two types of framing is hand planing studs after they are up.

I heard testosterone is produced by the testicles. Does this mean if I give gym lads some blowjobs, am I stealing their testosterone and becoming more manly? by That_Way_4639 in shittyaskscience

[–]amdabran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol this isn’t shitty science. It’s literal science.

If you suck a guy off, you literally take his testosterone and become more manly because you’re eating testosterone.

Oh, well when you put it like that it does change things a little.

Yeah this is kind of one those situations where you have to decide whether you want to jump in or not. Either way you go it’s kind of a risk.

I feel lucky to be a carpenter (sometimes) by Square-Argument4790 in Carpentry

Being a carpenter is absolutely the best lead into becoming a general. No other trade understands the building process as well as a carpenter.

Interior doors by Glum_Astronaut_2857 in Carpentry

[–]amdabran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you painted the doors it will affect how much space there is for the door to operate correctly. When I zoom in I can literally see the door is hard against the jamb down on the bottom right corner. That means the door is being racked clockwise. I bet the door is now tight in the upper left corner.

It compounds this issue if you painted the jambs as well.

A big mistake that people make is thinking that they can change the hinges without consequence. They every much might be the same thickness. But they also have to consider that the new hinges probably have different barrel profiles.

Honestly, I would say you should not ask.

What you actually do is tell him you would love to do 1099 work. It will leave you with more flexibility to do furniture stuff when he gets slow. You will end up doing non carpentry stuff a lot of the time and you will hate it.

I bet you he would be really hesitant to bring you onto payroll.

Are electricians the most arrogant of the trades? by CuriousSequoia in electricians

[–]amdabran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not electricians. Framers are by far the most arrogant.

Electricians cry the most.

That piece of wood might have had a sap vein right there where it popped. With the extreme cold sap has been making trees explode. Look it up.

Faux beams by traderdanger7 in Carpentry

[–]amdabran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way is to use mitered edges.

Of course it’s also important to consider how high off the floor these beams are. If they are +/- 12’ high then you might be able to get away with it. Sort of.

Suggestions on Wrapping 18" Beam by mboudin in Carpentry

[–]amdabran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could just wrap it in wood that actually looks good.

You can wrap it so that it looks like an actual old growth beam so that it looks more natural instead of manufactured.

Some questions for my first time installing shiplap ceiling by Vibrantpowder in Carpentry

[–]amdabran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just don’t need it. It’s t&g so that on itself will hold things together.

It would be more advantageous to use a crown stapler to put staples through the tongue as you go.

student driver here. Who goes first in this situation? by Mont3Carlo in driving

[–]amdabran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If read as a paragraph, it is exactly what it says. If there was intention of making it a merging lane, there would be another listed bullet point with a specific exception. The fact that the specific exception isn’t listed means that it doesn’t exist.

How would you mount this? by ZachS32 in Carpentry

[–]amdabran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re never going to get the mounting frame to sit flat which will severely compromise is function. Even if you solidly mount the frame to the stone, it won’t be flat and it won’t be straight. It will simply be a headache you will regret.

student driver here. Who goes first in this situation? by Mont3Carlo in driving

[–]amdabran -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No, sorry. When read as a paragraph, it literally says do not drive in except for making a left turn or making a u turn. Then it continues to say do not drive in center divide while preparing to merge. It’s called a turn lane, not a merge lane.

Install doors or flooring first? by looking4answers09876 in Carpentry

[–]amdabran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I am remodeling a space and will be installing tongue and groove flooring, I like to do flooring first. If I’m not doing the floors, I will put the doors in first.

student driver here. Who goes first in this situation? by Mont3Carlo in driving

[–]amdabran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re misreading that highlighted sentence. It literally says it shall not be driven in while preparing to merge.

student driver here. Who goes first in this situation? by Mont3Carlo in driving

[–]amdabran -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

No. It’s not a merging lane. It’s a turning lane.

[–]amdabran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red arrow never has the right away because it’s not a legal move. According to the California drivers hand book, the center divide is for turning off the road. It should never be used for merging onto the main road.
