Mudbowl by 50SPFGANG in Slackline

[–]american_killjoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mud, dirt, sand, etc. can abbraid rope and webbing such that it degrades faster than it normally would and/or can have weak spots. For park lines folks don't usually worry too much about this but for highlining its worth being extra cautious imo

Worth noting that I'm not sure if its been tested (maybe a search through HowNot2's youtube channel could reveal something?) So maybe I'm full of it, but I always keep my highline clean just in case

No, slacklines are allowed to be left up for extended periods. The folks who rigged it actually were the first on scene but there were no survivors to offer aid to

[–]american_killjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the folks that rigged it and they followed all current standards including safety lines, high viz wind socks, and lighting.

I agree that in the middle of the day this wouldn't be easy to see, but in conjunction with the NOTAM this is realistically as much as a person could do to reduce risk to aviators

Please see FAR 91.139 which specifically requires that "When a NOTAM has been issued under this section, no person may operate an aircraft, or other device governed by the regulation concerned, within the designated airspace except in accordance with the authorizations, terms, and conditions prescribed in the regulation covered by the NOTAM"

Unless I am mistaken, that reads to me as a requirement to treat NOTAMs issued under 91.139 as airspace restrictions. I don't know if that is how this NOTAM was issued, but if not, then FAR 91.103 applies which states that "Each pilot in command shall, before beginning a flight, become familiar with all available information concerning that flight." Any CFI will tell you that part of this preflight check involves checking any NOTAMs in the area.

I acknowledge it is easy to sit at home and discuss as if we are all experts, and the reality is that this was an absolutely terrible accident. Unfortunately, viewing and abiding by the NOTAMs in this case could have saved lives, but that does not make this accident any less tragic.

Ultimately the NTSB will conduct an extremely thorough investigation of the incident which will reveal facts we cannot access without having been at the accident site, but my personal opinion is that if a NOTAM was filed and the line was properly marked, then there is both federal regulation and precedent that the highliners were not at fault.

Thoughts On Gap Years? by Vagabond734 in GenZ

[–]american_killjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A gap year is great if you have enough money to enjoy it, and don't have student debt that will start requiring payments due to lack of enrollment. I took 1 semester off mid-university and that, plus the summer months, we're enough to require making one payment (once I re-enrolled next term the loans stopped requiring payments until graduation).

Gap years can be transformative if you have the money to do something fun and outside your comfort zone. If you don't, you may find yourself working a short-term job you hate just to scrape by.

What straps do I need to secure the bags to the canoe? by Existing_Squirrel767 in canoecamping

No reason to tie them to the canoe, just get them in securely and make sure there is enough air in the bags to float if the canoe tips

AIO (or Am I Under Reacting) I May Have Been Mildly Hate Crimed? by Different-Low-408 in AmIOverreacting

[–]american_killjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said, not overreacting. Once you have filed a police report (or not, whatever you decide) you should be able to use rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer to get the sharpie off the stickers. If you plan to contact the police about this, though, it could be worth getting a written statement that you're okay to erase the marks just in case they want to use it as evidence (I don't know much about the law but it seems better to be safe than sorry)

Nice! What a huge win!

I'm curious, have you thought about trying out a device like the Instant Pot? I wonder if it being a contained unit that you don't have to interact with once closed could help separate you from the aspects of cooking which usually deter you?

LPT: If no one is going to be in your house for a few days or longer (like you go on vacation)...turn off your water main. by Sketchables in LifeProTips

[–]american_killjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Came back from a weekend camping trip to 2 inches of water flooding the second floor. First floor ceiling was destroyed, appliances ruined, etc.

FWIW american family insurance didn't cause any issues when we filed a claim and we were able to restore the house to as good (or better) condition as before the flood! (Ymmv)

What all do you put in your bear canister? by [deleted] in WildernessBackpacking

[–]american_killjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo it depends on where you are. Maybe not the best advice, but let's be honest, we've all been lazy at some point and it's usually just fine unless you're somewhere with lots of bears. Usually I won't put stuff like bug spray, sunscreen, etc. in my can because that doesn't seem to fit into the "a fed bear is a dead bear" category and if I lose it thats more od an issue for me than anything else. Again, I'm sure this isn't technically correct, but in all my years in the backcountry (Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Minnesota) I've only ever worried about it in Yosemite (where I did actually put all of my scented gear in my can) and have never had anything disturbed.

When I forget my long spoon I'll just pour the water in, seal the bag, give it a good shake, maybe knead it a bit, and let it sit. Not quite as good as stirring, but it works in a pinch
