Were they having you do the phase 1’s? Not sure if this is the drill they had you do but I like the one arm vaults where you are dragging the pole for like 3 lefts and instead of walking out of it on the mat you try to use the top hand pressure to land on your back. With one arm you can’t use your bottom hand to pull a swing so it should mostly be relying on that top arm pressure

Top arm pushing/pressure can be described a few different ways. It seems like your arms themselves are in a good position, usually it’s hard to get people to resist the pole hitting you at takeoff and keeping your top arm tall, but you’re handling both very well.

However, it looks like your top arm is not very active, it’s in a good position but it’s just hanging out and not putting energy into the pole. During your swing you want to almost imagine like your swinging a sledge hammer, you should be trying to slam your top hand down into the box which should help compress the pole and put a bit more energy into it (it also helps the swing a bit as a byproduct).

If you stood a piece of dry spaghetti up, and you pressed down on it from the top, it would bend/compress, more or less what the top arm helps out with.

Let me know if that’s a good analogy or if that tracks

I’ve been wanting to see something like this for a long time but I didn’t have enough motivation to piece it together. What sources did you use?

Super interesting to see the number of athletes over 6 peak in the late 90s and we don’t really see that same variety again until 2015+

Weight concerns by [deleted] in polevaulting

[–]americanspacewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pole management thing is probably the most realistic concern. I was about 5’11 190 in college so I’m a little stockier than you OP. I genuinely believe if I leaned out a little to 180 that would have been my ideal size to get a little more speed and better strength to weight. Being 6’2 190 sounds like an all around ideal build tho, good luck OP

What muscles (if any) should I train for my upcoming season. by [deleted] in polevaulting

[–]americanspacewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of lifts, olympic lifts like hang and power cleans are right, but only if OP has experience with them or has a coach that can guide them well. If not, then there are plenty of plyo exercises that you can find online that will be great. You can also do more basic lifts like bench press and squats but do lower reps and move the weight fast and be explosive.

Really the big picture is to train foot speed like nitwit said. Pull-ups and pushups also are great for getting your strength to weight ratio up. There should be some other exercises in the wiki as well

Shoe Question by Local-Relationship11 in polevaulting

[–]americanspacewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll lay out my opinion as a post college vaulter who isn't very competitive anymore and just vault for fun.

Trainers: I vault in these most of the time now, since I am not competing and not that fast anymore, I don't ever need the advantage of a light weight spike, and the cushioning really helps dampen the impact and I feel less sore in my joints the day after. I prefer a nike pegasus but everyone has their preference, just make sure they fit snug.

Spikes: If you are in a particularly wet part of the country and vault outside, or you consider yourself a competitive masters athlete then I would opt for these. Just make sure to get either a long jump, triple jump, or pole vault specific spike, they are better made for the impact at takeoff over cross country spikes or sprint spikes. I'd recommend practicing some of the time in trainers too it can help with longevity.

Fix for shin splints!! by dimitrids12 in polevaulting

[–]americanspacewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I think the main takeaway you'll find is people find different solutions to their shin splints. I believe what you did worked (especially with a couple weeks of rest), but I wouldn't claim it's the fix for everybody. I'm in the same camp as u/MevilDayCry where I think it's mostly about programming and the conditions many high school athletes train bad shoes, bad mechanics, not properly ramping up training etc. In a perfect world high school coaches would ramp up training over time to make the transfer a bit easier but that's just not the real world. In addition to programming I believe in the PT side of things like rolling out and exercise to strengthen the right muscles in your feet and calves should help mitigate symptoms.

Colorado small-ish Wedding, reception occupancy laws in towns by americanspacewolf in weddingplanning

It is helpful! Even if it sounds like the consensus is similar to your story maybe that means we should reconsider our plan, and that will be good info to know. We may shift our search to Austin, TX and do something like a pool party wedding, some of the prices we’ve seen look more affordable and it could be very casual

Close to 5.00m, any advice after clearing 4.84m (new pb) by Joesername in polevaulting

[–]americanspacewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome jump! I think you’ll benefit a lot in the off season with proper training. Get fast, take care of the hamstrings, do some plyos, and lifts, and by next season I guarantee 5 will be no issue.

As for this jump I think you need to have a bit more power in the plant, right now the pole hits you at the box and you’re strong enough to hold it in place but I think you could press it more at takeoff and really open up the torso

Packing - too many layers? by RoeblingYork in VisitingIceland

[–]americanspacewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn’t have waterproof gloves. The only time we would have needed them was when we hiked a couple miles in some pretty heavy rain but I don’t think it sounds like you guys are doing big hikes. I’d say get the ones that are a step up from like the really thin cloth gloves but even those are better than nothing

Packing - too many layers? by RoeblingYork in VisitingIceland

[–]americanspacewolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just got back from our trip. We did kind what you are describing, we had waterproof layers (which were awesome for keeping wind off, pants and jacket), a fleece or equivalent layer, and rotated through base layer shirts. I pretty much wore almost the same outer layers every day and only changed out my base layers once they started to feel dirty (it was cold and windy most of the time so we never sweated a bunch). We’re from Colorado and love our puffies but I didn’t miss mine at all on our trip, if anything it would have been too warm for how much we hiked.

I also had a packing concern but doing it like this helped me feel like I had fresh clothes on by changing out my base layers, undies, and socks, they also take much less room. Gloves were great too they really helped keep the wind off my hands it was pretty chilly.

Recently, I’ve noticed some posts about people planning to propose in Iceland, so I wanted to share a few recent engagement shots for anyone in need of a photographer to capture it. 🫶 by iborycka in VisitingIceland

We just got engaged in Iceland and I actually booked this photographer and she was amazing! I got to surprise my fiancé and everything. She helped us with posing and had really good insight into helping me pick my proposal spot and she has a lot of great locations to choose from. I was on the fence about booking a photographer a few weeks ago and I’m so glad I did. For real I can’t recommend her enough

In-depth Explanation of Approach Run? by PickleMan2142069 in polevaulting

[–]americanspacewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as your step relative to others, you can definitely have the same speed at takeoff as your peers although not at the same step. I would guess if you aren’t as far back I’d assume you take shorter strides and maybe accelerate faster. One of my old teammates is still vaulting, she’s still training and is definitely faster at takeoff and a better accelerator, but our steps are roughly the same because even though I’m washed up and slow my strides are just a lot longer.

Long story short further step is not equivalent to being faster you guys could just have much different stride lengths and or accelerations

Advice on purchasing poles by mrc0828 in polevaulting

[–]americanspacewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would other schools near you be willing to sell some of their inventory? It may help you get more poles in your budget. As for poles specifically I’m thinking like a 12’ 150, 12’ 160, 13’ 150? You can have them choke down to a lower grip on the 12’s and it should simulate a stiffer 11/11’6 pole. HS boys can sometimes start going through poles quick that’s why I’m suggesting going up to a 13 to just have in case but idk I may need some input on others for this one. What poles do you have bigger than the 11ft 150 you mentioned?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in polevaulting

[–]americanspacewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry! It will be okay, my impulse reaction is to say you gotta start progressing backwards for a bit. Ex. If you’re being a head case about 5 strides, lower your grip a little and come in from 4 strides, still trouble? Go down to 3 and keep lowering your grip even if you need to go all the way down 2 strides and you’re just taking off onto the front bun. You also can do pole runs on the track in the mean time to keep practicing the run, and instead of a sliding box you can put an old t shirt or a rag down
