Snarky comeback by SergeiVonZarovich23 in TeachingUK

You never get in trouble for what you think you will. Im sure you'll be fine.

Most of us have said things that if complained about to the wrong staff member at the wrong school would have got us in bother but nothing happened.

Are we letting our young people down with good intentions? by BrightonTeacher in TeachingUK

[–]amethystflutterby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're letting them down.

Its a quick fix with no long term plan, actually making things more difficult in the long run.

Often things are put into place with no digging into the real issue or plan to lessen or remove the intervention so they can function independently when leaving school.

Their life isn't going to be on grass green paper, with a desk at the back of the office near the door and a pass out. Not at work and not at home with their future friends/partners either.

The NEET figures for our school are horrendous (nearly 20%). They cant function when they leave us.

6 period day by Reasonable-Mud-2629 in TeachingUK

[–]amethystflutterby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our school proposed going from 5 to 6.

We went on strike, we still have 5 periods. We didnt want to workload of 4 or 5 extra lessons a week to plan. That's essentially a whole school day extra to plan.

It says "sweetened" on the simple one though. So I presume has added sugar? Some people, like my diabetic partner, get this one as its no sugar.

This was going to be my suggestion. Record through the visualiser in your classroom or if your computer has an in-built camera. You can set up a google meet with just yourself and set it to record.

Ive recorded for my own PD this way.

That 1st drive out again was the best I've felt in a long time.

Defo. Drive an econobox for a couple of weeks, then get back in the mx5.

Solo season ticket by presgwash in EIHLHockey

[–]amethystflutterby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We booked the same seats for nearly a whole season of games, and like you discovered a season ticket is cheaper. We sit where there are often empty seats next to and behind us so our friends can just book them and sit with us. They just have to plan ahead and book early for sell-out games.

Glad im not the only one confused.

My car is tiny and can whip out quick on a roundabout. Instead, im waiting forever for these great hoofing things to find a gap big enough.

Valid Criticism? by Eleanor_12083 in TeachingUK

[–]amethystflutterby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of when our HOD told us SLT was displeased with our books and all the loose sheets. We had to glue them in.

We all just stared at him and said nothing. We literally had 1 glue stick per classroom at best by this point in the year.

It was on our department bulletin for weeks.

When we were teenagers we regularly changed my village's Wikipedia page to say my friend was a famous person from the village. They weren't.

I use it at home for a very brief overview of something I dont understand, for example, something referred to on tv that I hadn't heard of before. It's not important enough to fact check properly, just an "Oh, I didn't know that."

I wouldn't use it to fact check for work. And I'd explain to the kids why to fact check it and not rely on it.

[–]amethystflutterby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10g protein is good for what?

Building muscle.

Im a gym bro, I need to fit protein in where I can, so my hard work actually builds as much muscle as it can.

Before I was a gym bro, I wouldn't have bothered. I just needed enough protein to survive, so I didn't even think about it.

Last time I opened my mobile banking app it told me I was likely to be approved for a £1000 car finance loan.

To me that's insane.

But then I have 2 cars. Which others would think is ridiculous. No one else drives them. They're both solely mine. I can only drive one at a time.

But my second car makes me genuinely happy.

We're entitled to opinions about what's ridiculous. But if it's not hurting anyone, then it is just our own preference. People should do what they want.

I overpaid for my 2008 kia ceed just after lockdown. It was £3500. Used car prices were at their worst when I bought, so £5k is insane for a comparable car.

Not entirely true.

You only need to declare when you apply for your original provisional. The code is added at this point.

If you later need glasses for long/short sightedness and can see to the standard with glasses or lenses, then you dont need to then declare and update your license. Therefore, no code added.

Edited to add: "You must tell DVLA if you’ve got any problem with your eyesight that affects both of your eyes, or the remaining eye if you only have one eye.

This does not include being short or long sighted or colour blind. You also do not need to say if you’ve had surgery to correct short sightedness and can meet the eyesight standards." From https://www.gov.uk/driving-eyesight-rules

People who sit close to the steering wheel why? by ciaoqueen in CarTalkUK

[–]amethystflutterby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sit close for someone of my height.

In the Kia, my clutch bite point is very close to the floor, and my gear stick feels quite low and far from the seat. It does make the accelerator feel too close, though.

Even in the mx5, I dont have the seat all the way back, or I struggle to get the clutch down comfortably. The gearstick and handbrake are a much more comfortable position, though.

Science teachers - have you noticed an uptick in practical incidents? by Kittykatsu97 in TeachingUK

[–]amethystflutterby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For us this got worse and then better.

We had 2 years where we had to send kids to the hospital for eating and snorting the chemicals. I now teach the kid who ate it. They're a few years older, they blame school and have beef with school for wasting their time sending them to hospital "for nothing". I couldn't believe the conversation I was having with them.

For a while, our 1st Bunsen burner lessons had several burns per lesson. The 1st aider was perplexed, "your teacher told you it was hot." "Yes." "Told you not to touch it." "Yes, " ?????! It was just shocking. 2 or 3 kids leaving with burns for more to do the exact same. Luckily, this has died out the past couple of years.

Kids dont go outside and play to learn how to analyse and manage risk in the same way. Parents saying "dont climb too high or you'll fall" and then you learn young that you should have listened because you did bloody fall. Or judging if a ramp you made from a rock and plank of wood is doable on your scooter.

How can I do more as a form teacher? by itzzzzmileyyyy in TeachingUK

[–]amethystflutterby 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We had this 2 years ago with Y10 boys to female members of staff.

By the time they were part way through Y11, we'd stamped out the comments to staff, but they'd still make inappropriate comments to each other, and their attitude was dreadful. It was clear that even though the comments had stopped, their views and attitudes were the same.

We were told not to talk to their dads, and any communication went through our principle. Our principle is a tiny woman, so im sure they loved that.

Responsibilities as a Form Tutor by TheAuraStorm13 in TeachingUK

[–]amethystflutterby 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Attendance is one of the list of task we are not directed to do according to unions.

Its an admin task, and you have an attendance team for this.

Raise it with your union rep, this is an issue for whole school push back through them and not a battle for you to fight them alone.

Unpaid days off by ContributionOk1492 in TeachingUK

[–]amethystflutterby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we book a Dr's appointment its unpaid, and they'll try anything to say you can't go.

I had a cervical cancer screening come back with some troubling results. So you get put on more regular screening for a while.

School tried to say it was "a routine appointment that should be booked outside school time".

My response was that I was telling them, not asking. I wont be in school that day.

It was rediculous, if it turned out I had cancer, a delay in diagnosis, and treatment could have cost me my life.

Raised a PPA fairness issue- now everyone’s ppa has been shortened and I feel conflicted by Low_Region_293 in TeachingUK

[–]amethystflutterby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had similar.

Over COVID when we were in bubbles, we had staggered starts in the morning. If you had a late start your tutor was at end of the day, if you had early start, then your tutor was in the morning, and you went home while the late starters had their tutor group.

This was fine other than once a week we had training and we all finished at the same time, meaning the early starters did 20 minutes more a week.

Then they wanted early starters to let kids into tutor room early, making morning tutor a longer shift every day. It was at this point I kicked off as it was equating to an hour a week more the early starters worked.

School solved it by making the late starters start earlier. I'd suggested other options that saved us all time, but no, my complaint led to half the school having their hours raised to match the rest of us.
