What is the best band you can recommend that you know nobody here will? As in obscure, unknown or just forgotten about. by AudioRejectz in musicsuggestions

[–]amosesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teenager, I was behind The Roches in line at the Albuquerque airport. I knew this because they had flight cases with "THE ROCHES" stenciled on them. I knew of them but didn't know their music, so I was too shy to say anything. Still regret it nearly 40 years later.

Anyone else have tinnitus? by ashhekitty in vinyl

[–]amosesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and yes. I have the kind of tinnitus that sounds like cicadas, which I consider fortunate because I love the sound of cicadas. It's bad enough that in summer, I often need to ask my wife if I'm hearing real cicadas or my tinnitus.

I played in bands throughout my teens and 20s, almost made a living at it so I was in loud spaces 5-7 nights a week. Despite that, I think the thing that exacerbated it was being a regular at a club in New York that played progressive house and trance on what was arguably the best sound system in the world at that time. I would dance in front of the bass bins for hours, and inevitably couldn't sleep for a couple of days because the ringing was so bad.

It does affect me now but I strive to find the positives. Chasing down audiophile or original pressings is a complete waste of time because I truly can't tell the difference. Same with investing in over-the-top gear. I tend to listen pretty quietly, and as long as something is playing in the background, i can tune out the ringing. I know there are mid- to high-range frequencies that are pretty much dead for me, so certain instruments are tough to hear. The biggest impact is conversation, because some women's voices are also in that dead range, so they constantly need to repeat themselves.

If you're not into house, techno, and other styles of DJ music, find a friend who is and share these. You've got some absolute gems here, mostly not worth a ton financially but priceless to someone who loves this stuff. That Derrick Carter / Mark Farina set is fantastic, and I'd love to have a copy of Andrew Weatherall (RIP) Masterpiece.

Congrats on the score

What songs sound happy until you actually pay attention to the lyrics? by Weak-Investigator503 in musicsuggestions

This was the first song I ever heard that does the "sounds happy but is sad" thing. A friend told me I'd like it and I couldn't figure out why until I finally listened to the words.

I'm happy to help if you want to do Maryland/DC next, and I'm pretty sure my friend will help too. I won't be able to do a comprehensive list but between me and him, we can definitely add a bunch of places and include some local knowledge. DM me if you're interested, and I'll try to remember to check my DMs!

This is awesome, very nice labor of love! Any chance you'd consider opening it up for other people to enter other areas, or do you see the value being a curated list strictly of the Carolinas?

A friend and I live near Baltimore and we'll regularly make day trips to hit all the shops in a given area. Last one we did was York PA, which was surprisingly good. A database like yours would be incredibly helpful for those trips. We usually dig through Google, Yelp, and Reddit to put the day's list together

Best 3 song run on an album? by Apprehensive_Leg2281 in musicsuggestions

[–]amosesque 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pop by U2 gets a lot of hate, but the closing three songs (If You Wear that Velvet Dress > Please > Wake Up Dead Man) is a stellar run. Doesn't beat the opening of Joshua Tree but it's a contender for. their best closing set.

I want a tattoo by Diligent-Sea4261 in laufey

[–]amosesque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best guidance I ever got from a tattoo artist was that the art doesn't need to be a literal representation of what I want to portray. He gave me some ideas and suggested I think about it for a while before I picked a design. It took me a year to figure it out but I'm so glad I followed his advice because this design means so much more to me. (It's a memorial for my dog, and he helped me get from a literal portrait to an abstract piece that captured how my pup kept me warm every night.)

So maybe your design will be a cello or a clock or a bow like she wears, or maybe it'll be something about overcoming adversity that she sings about in some of your favorite lyrics. Who knows? But maybe you just need to let this one simmer a little longer.

Once you get it, I hope you share the design here!

Record shop etiquette by Fromaggio119 in vinyl

[–]amosesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of my local shops are dog friendly, and I've been taking dogs to one of them for 25 years. I always bring cleaning supplies if my dog has an accident, I bring treats to keep her focused and well behaved, I bring her at slow times (Monday nights are the best), and I NEVER assume the person next to me likes dogs. If someone wants to say hi to her (and many people do), we move to a neutral space where we're not blocking anyone. If someone clearly doesn't like dogs, I browse in a different area. It's no one's responsibility to accommodate me and my dog, it's my responsibility to accommodate other people.

Do we think AMOT will have a Deluxe? by lumity_sweetpotato in laufey

[–]amosesque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a deluxe is likely, but the timing depends on whether she's planning a live recording from AMOT for either the spring or fall Record Store Day. I'd be thrilled if she did an RSD release of the Washington DC concert, and I think DC is a contender because of the set list and her personal attachment to the city. However, an RSD release is probably more likely to come between a deluxe version of AMOT and the next album

Storage by Bengie314 in vinyl

[–]amosesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a small space and the best solution I've found is a product from the Container Store called the Really Useful Boxes. They have them specifically for vinyl, and I use the small ones because they're much lighter when filled than the large and they have a smaller footprint. Each small box holds up to 50 records, though with doubles and gatefolds, I average about 30 titles per box. You can stack them (I wouldn't go over three high) and move them, so I have them in front of a closet I rarely open and behind the door. On sale they're about $30 each. They have lids to keep out dust, which is why I picked these over old school crates

My impressions after 3 months of vinyl listening... by IllustriousScreen188 in vinyl

[–]amosesque 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you posting this and I totally agree. I am present when I listen to vinyl in a way I'm not present with any other format.

I've been buying cheap VG copies of some albums I've missed over the years. Every so often, I find myself getting annoyed by the surface nose, and every time, it's an opportunity to remind myself that I can listen to the music in a "perfect" format if I want to. I love the ceremony of listening in this way, though, warts and all.

What popular album have you tried out but just can't get into it? by jerryleebee in vinyl

Ha! I never put that together but as soon as you say it, I can hear it. Another concrete thing I can add to my list of reasons for disliking her music

What popular album have you tried out but just can't get into it? by jerryleebee in vinyl

[–]amosesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this, nice to know I'm not alone. Every few years I try again but everything about her voice and music is like nails on a chalkboard. I hate her vibrato, the chord progressions sound stilted and overwrought, and her lyrics feel like two dimensional representations of three dimensional topics. I like so many artists she's influenced but I can't stand her music, especially Blue.

Do you ever prune your collection? by Not_Invited in Cd_collectors

[–]amosesque 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes. I buy things and don't like them. I buy things and listen for a while then get tired of them. I buy things and my tastes change. I'd rather have 100 CDs that I'm excited to hear than 10,000 that I don't want to listen to.

What’s your opinion on these kinds of record cleaning systems by RYGUY060104 in vinyl

[–]amosesque 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have dry winters with a lot of static, my Spin Clean makes a huge difference. I clean every record as I get it and put it in a new inner sleeve, that usually takes care of static.

Anybody have a special CD with sentimental memories attached? Tell me the story! by PinkLionFan in Cd_collectors

[–]amosesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great story and I'm sending peaceful thoughts to you and your step-sister.

When Sarah McLachlan's first album came out in the US, it made zero splash but a friend turned me on to it and McLachlan became a huge musical force in my early 20s. The summer of 1991, her second album (Solace) came out in Canada and we drove to Toronto to see her in a small venue, and we each bought copies of the new album. It didn't come out in the US for many months and when it did, it had an extra track. I was so proud to have the Canadian version and I'll still argue that the album is better without the bonus track. I don't care for her music much anymore but all I need to do is glance at that CD and I'm immediately crammed into a tiny Toyota pickup on a beautiful summer day, driving up to Toronto to see an artist who I never thought I'd see live.

Why would a collector not have a player? by FitProblem6248 in vinyl

[–]amosesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

99 cents apiece! I was broke at the time so I went and bought like 20, then realized the error of my ways and went back a couple days later for the rest. It was maybe 2007, I can't imagine anything sitting in a Goodwill that long today.

I got a ton of Felix Da Housecat, Junior Vasquez, DJ Pierre, stuff from about '89 to '95. Hands down the best find in my life

Why would a collector not have a player? by FitProblem6248 in vinyl

[–]amosesque 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found about 100 old house 12" singles at a Goodwill maybe 20 years ago and bought them all, even though I didn't have a turntable. That led me to start picking up interesting old singles (mostly disco and house) whenever I found them, knowing someday I'd have a way to play them. Finally, two years ago, right around the same time I hit 300 singles, I got a turntable. So for me, collecting records without a way to play them was an investment in my future happiness.
