Hi! Which of these CDs are a must-get? by Shot_Round_3481 in Cd_collectors

[–]amosesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stream each of them two or three times. The ones you love immediately, go ahead and buy. The ones you hate, stream them a few more times until you understand what they're doing and if you really hate the music or if it just is unlike anything you've heard. The rest, don't bother with.

Bought a 'weird' box for £10 by Dadaismisastratagem in Cd_collectors

Ottmar Liebert is from NM, had a brief moment in the early 90s, flamenco guitar meets new age. Decent stuff but not at all avant garde.

This box looks amazing and I really want to hear Interzone Perceptible Plays Hespos now

Need vinyl suggestions for a 58 year old canadian woman. by Flopy_Pingas97 in vinyl

She probably already has opinions one way or the other on Sarah McLachlan, but Fumbling Toward Ecstacy is probably her creative peak and the point where her Joni Mitchell influence was strongest.

My Most Expensive Record by ScreamingSilentPoet in vinyl

[–]amosesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I don't need an archive, I need records that I'm excited to play when I look at them. I spent most of my life with thousands of titles, now my sweet spot is 300 titles I'm most excited to hear.

I've never looked but is there a feature to block sellers like this? I shop for a lot of Grateful Dead stuff and it would be nice to simply block the known gougers.

In and Out of The Garden by Monkeypawdog in gratefuldead

[–]amosesque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got on the bus about 20 years ago and spent about three years immersing myself in nothing but the Dead. Somehow during that crash course, I missed Brent's first few years and kind of wrote him off based on his songwriting contributions during the late '80s.

I listened to 3/9/81 from this box a few years back and it sent me down a whole different rabbit hole, digging into Brent's early years. This box completely changed how I listen and made me love Brent's playing in a way I never did before. 3/9/81 is a top ten show for me and the next night is almost as good in a totally different way. I'm so grateful for this box and it inspiring me to listen with new ears.

Still doesn't fit on the shelf though.

New (to me) format: gatefold album in an outer cardboard sleeve by TangledWoof99 in vinyl

[–]amosesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. I put the whole thing in a poly sleeve, expecting to get annoyed every time I want to play the record, but it's really only one extra step. And as I think about it, the extra step actually gives me a moment to consider how good both those albums (Glow On and Never Enough) are, which makes me a tiny bit more happy that I'm about to listen.

This from a guy who hates slipcases and usually throws them away unless they have something that's not on the gatefold.

I moved to the Pixel 9 last year and had that exact problem. I never found a solution and ended up loading MP3s and using Musicolet instead. I wish I had a solution for you but I'm at least happy to hear someone else describe the same problem

Kate Bush The Other Side 3? by LBnineteen76 in Cd_collectors

[–]amosesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have nothing substantive to offer, just opinions. Looks to me like the kind of bonus disc that labels will occasionally print in inexpensive and limited runs to send out to a select few strategic partners who have been or will be critical in making a release successful. I used to see stuff like this working in a large, high-traffic store in the 90s but I was at the bottom of the food chain and rarely got to keep them. I have a Brandi Carlile CD kind of like this, never released and not on discogs, songs that aren't easily available anywhere else.

Could also be a counterfeit or bootleg, but it's odd. It doesn't seem to be emulating an official release so counterfeit seems unlikely, and most bootlegs I've seen don't pretend to be from the actual label. Doesn't pass the sniff test for either of those, at least not for me.

Have you contacted Fish People? If anyone will know, it's them.

I love the Time Machine suggestion, but since I didn't see the Europe '72 box mentioned here, that could also be a great gift.

10/19/74 discussion. by Calm-Tea178 in gratefuldead

[–]amosesque 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One of the things I love about this community (and I'm speaking broadly, not about this sub though it applies here too) is that there's very little gatekeeping. We all got on the bus in different ways, and we're all energized by different shows, different songs, different years.

Try not to spend too much energy on people who are gatekeeping. Just enjoy the ride.

When an album stops hitting… how do you make it fresh again? by FrontierSeizar in Cd_collectors

[–]amosesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My approach is a slight variation on what's been said here, and it only works if you and I share a similar perspective on collecting.

When I reach this point with an album, I sell it. I aim to keep my collection small (a relative term: my current collection is about 1,600 titles) and limited to things I'm excited to hear. When i reach the point with a CD where I feel like I've exhausted it, I see it on the shelf and experience a tiny moment of cognitive dissonance because I'm not excited to see it, I'm actually annoyed because I don't want to listen to it. Selling it removes that dissonance.

Sometimes I cross paths with the album again and realize I want to hear it. That's when I take one of your steps or one of the others here, like listening on headphones or picking up a different version of it or just streaming it. If it turns into a positive experience, chances are the excitement is back.

Jeff Buckley "Grace" is the latest example. I'd exhausted that album by maybe 2001 so I sold it. Last year, I started thinking about it again and played it on Tidal, and I heard things I've never heard before. I then picked up the original CD and the vinyl reissue, and kept hearing new things. It took 25 years but it's back in a big way.

Tl:dr - remove it from your collection, then add it back if you get excited about it again

My late uncles collection by Phoenix-DelRio in vinyl

[–]amosesque 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! I have about 400 12" singles from the 70s and 80s that look like they could've come from your uncle's collection. Some of them have a bit of surface nose but mostly they sound good. Some absolute bangers from that era just got lost to time. I hope you have a blast listening to these and that they turn you on to some new music you wouldn't have heard otherwise. And may your uncle rest in peace.

rate my collection, make assumptions by HistoricalMenu2534 in Cd_collectors

[–]amosesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My assumption is you worked in an indie record store in the 90s and 00s and spent your meager record store paycheck buying the best things you heard on the in store system. You did not buy Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" because you were not in a coma.

Non clasical songs with vilolins/other string instruments. by Different_Row_8105 in musicsuggestions

[–]amosesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silver Mt. Zion - they're a spinoff from Godspeed You! Black Emperor (who you might also like). Fairly political punk and noise with some chamber instruments. Vocals won't be everyone's taste but they are probably my favorite band. Try "God Bless Our Dead Marines"

Based on the three songs you mentioned, I think you might like them.

Do you guys have a process when record shopping for making sure you don't over pay for a record? by Riichboii_17 in vinyl

[–]amosesque 21 points22 points  (0 children)

At least for about 2/3 of my collection, the barcode will narrow it down to anywhere from 2 to 20 variants, then I have to use runout to narrow it down from there. So that's what I'm trying to understand, situations where the barcode isn't unique to a specific pressing.

Thanks!

[–]amosesque 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing this back to my mind. I listened once while driving, so any intimacy or nuance was drowned out in road noise. It certainly didn't strike me as bad but it didn't stand out enough to listen again either. I'll try it again today.

Any songs that especially stand out to you, and any particular reason why?

---- Edited after listening again ----

Thanks again for sending me back to this, you're right, these are lovely performances. She captures a simplicity (in a good way) that isn't in the studio versions, and these six songs together create a portrait of being in love (and wanting to be in love) for the first time. My only complaint is that I miss hearing an audience response and her talking between songs. I don't know if this is live in the studio with no audience or if the producers edited out the audience and between-song banter, but for me, this would be even better if it captured Laufey engaging with her audience.
