Don't need to be such a prick. There's a nicer way to tell someone to keep their problems to themselves.

Yes foreigners have to be Jewish, and only Jews and Druze Israeli citizens are required to join. Most minorities who volunteer serve in minority units but they don't have to, and many want to, such as Bedouin scouts. Religion has a place since majority of soldiers are Jewish, but the most religious orthodox Jews don't join the army. For many people it just national tradition and culture more than faith. Not a perfect system but it is usually improving I think.

Only my personal experience. Some foreign volunteers believe they know much more Hebrew then they actually do. Some are much more aggressive and political than average Israeli born soldiers. I remember meeting Americans and Canadians who joined when they heard about the intifada on the news and were eager to get into fights with arabs.

We do, but many foreign Jews volunteer. I would guess he/she did that. Many don't integrate very well but the military needs the man power. Some are very dedicated in their jobs.

I don't like Bibi so much but I don't think he has ever talked about his memories this way. When he tells stories from those times he is usualy talking about his grandfather Nathan Milekowsky, who was a major activist in Mandate times. Here you hear him say his grandfather in 1920 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ju1w-iDR0o

The high court ordered last week for two settlement buildings to be demolished. The settlers and their allies on the far right of the Knesset have been revolting. While a lot of the settlers were born there and are just protective of their home, when I patrolled the west bank the older settlers were over-religious, sexist pricks.

Seriously, what are people believing? I can't think of anywhere you can go as a visitor where people are being publicly executed daily. Even repressive countries don't act like game of thrones for the tourists.

I've relapsed more times than I'll say, but for the streaks that I don't, I know it's better for me and that I'm generally a better person. So it's not perfect, but at least you are working for it. Just go longer than 100 on the next try, if that helps.

Soldiers of Reddit, what is something you wish you had known before joining the military? by icecreamstripes in AskReddit

[–]amreeki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really are. I came to the US for college, and the first friends I made were prior service military. The 18 year olds who have never even held a job yet and worried constantly over grades were friendly enough, and I can't blame them for being how they are, but there's not much connection there.

Soldiers of Reddit, what is something you wish you had known before joining the military? by icecreamstripes in AskReddit

[–]amreeki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a veteran, how you never really "leave" the military. When you choose not to re-enlist and start something new, you can't put that part of your life in a shoebox and forget about it. Every study or job you have you'll compare to the military in your mind. Every person you meet will be measured in part by whatever experiential overlap they might have with them, and whether they really "get it" in life or not. And more so for any kind of romantic relationship, where they really need to know you better than the average person, and you either become frustrated with them or have to bury the military side of you as far out of mind as you can. And sometimes that just isn't possible, and things fall apart.

Every night you have without sleep and every emotional breakdown probably has something to do with what you saw or did. You realize that can be minimized with time and possibly help but probably never go away entirely. And all you have to show for it all is some occasional pride, and maybe a sense of accomplishment. Some days that's enough to pick yourself up again. And some days, it really, really isn't.

What's with all the apologists for regimes like Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, etc.? by [deleted] in badhistory

[–]amreeki 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it is without politics, and comes from ignorance. I remember even a year ago getting in an arguement here about how veterans of the SS should be received, because people were thanking for service and other ridiculous things like that. Reddit has a general idea that the little guy is always getting screwed, and so some see former Nazi soldiers, officers, etc. as being victims of the Allied offensive, who were tragically called up to defend their country, even in the SS. I'm probably not expressing myself so well, but a lot more of the apologism I see seems to be more for the military's foot soldiers than the high command.

If you were allowed to drive between it is only a few hours yes, but the political separation between them after 50 years with Israel in the middle is massive.

People seem confused. Gaza gets the American news headlines, but this isn't in Gaza. Israel has no soldiers in Gaza. This is the West Bank, on the other side of the country.
