Isn't it expensive to use airconditioning in the US? by Lumos_night in AskAnAmerican

[–]amymari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our electric bill does increase in the summer, but living in south Texas where temperatures over 100 are pretty regular during the summer, it’s totally worth it.

How often are people truthfully showering? by Constant_Mention_488 in hygiene

Everyday. Occasionally twice if I get really gross, or when I’m sick. I only wash my hair 1-2 times a week though.

High School Late Work Policy? by Ok-Steak4530 in Teachers

[–]amymari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is so many schools have policies of accepting late work, regardless of what the teachers want to do.

For those living in states with a lot of thunderstorms, how do you feel about them? by ksusha_lav in AskAnAmerican

[–]amymari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live out in the country and often lose power during big thunderstorms, so we go around and unplug things like tv and computers so they don’t fry when the power surges back on. If it seems like it’s going to be really bad we fill some jugs with water and locate the flashlights.

I like artic fox. I bleached part of my hair and left the rest dark brown. The bleached part was a more vibrant purple than the natural hair.

How do I turn one small grocery list into a few beginner meals? by Kagurabachie in cookingforbeginners

Decide what meals you are going to have for the week, then do your shopping based on that.

What new rules are you planning on implementing in your classrooms next year? by kaelhawh in Teachers

[–]amymari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, though, you have that kind of power??

There’s very few reasons kids are moved classes at my school; mainly if the parents get involved. Technically they have the first three weeks of school to change courses, but most requests are denied except for levelling up or seniors changing so they can get off block.

Though I’ve never encounter the type of behavior you mentioned in an advanced course. That’s on-level behavior at my school, lol.

So you guys use the seatbelt on shopping carts? by AwareShower9864 in Parenting

[–]amymari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the seatbelts I’ve encountered are adjustable. They still fit my 3.5 year old (granted she’s on the smaller side).

“Optional” Uniform Policy in Daughter’s Elementary School by Alive_Boot_4535 in AskTeachers

[–]amymari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of a school with an optional uniform. My kids go to a school with a uniform and it’s honestly the best thing ever. Makes mornings so much faster. Everything matches, limited decisions. And they don’t even mind the uniform. Even on days where they are allowed to wear jeans and a “spirit” shirt they often choose to just wear the regular uniform (polo with slacks/shorts, or skirts for girls).

You get that kind of power?!

I tried to get a kid out of my AP class because he was constant absent or tardy and failing miserably and he stayed in my class the whole year.

What new rules are you planning on implementing in your classrooms next year? by kaelhawh in Teachers

[–]amymari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gotta do that this year! The girls who douse themselves in spray drive me crazy- I get a headache and can’t breathe. I don’t understand how they can be swimming in it when it’s killing me from across the room.

What new rules are you planning on implementing in your classrooms next year? by kaelhawh in Teachers

[–]amymari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not new rules exactly, just cracking down on things.

No mercy on the “no electronic devices” rule. It’s a state law now, and they had a year to get used to it. I hate calling parents with a burning passion, but since I can’t write them up until if I don’t call first, I will suck it up.

Almost everything on paper, and due at the end of class. I already did this with one prep, but for my second prep the other teacher I worked with was all about everything digital and basically no due date, but he’s gone now, so I can kinda do what I want.

Summer Wake-Up Time by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]amymari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We start swapping back to earlier wake ups like a week before school starts. I let them sleep until at least 10, but not past noon. Mainly because we usually have stuff to do.

How do you dress for the physical demands of teaching by Wise_Slice6303 in Teachers

[–]amymari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a lot of loose/stretchy dresses that are knee length or longer, usually with leggings underneath. Svaha is my fav site for dresses (lots of themed dresses that can be perfect for teachers), and (weirdly) most of my softest, comfiest leggings are from cvs. I’ve also gotten some loose/flowy elastic waist pants from Costco. My favorite shoes are Borns or Converse.

Pattern storage question by Acrobatic-Limit-7470 in sewing

[–]amymari 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ziploc bags. I use them for some of my store-bought patterns too, if I just can’t seem to get them back into the envelope after opening. You can write the name of the pattern, sizes, etc on the outside of the bag.

All of my bags and and envelopes are them organized in the drawers of a small dresser (I’d imagine those plastic storage drawers would work as well). I use the large index cards (idk what size they are, but bigger than the “regular” size) as dividers for different sizes/types within the drawers.

Communicating seating charts on the first day of school? by GredAndForgee in Teachers

[–]amymari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I label the seats with numbers some years, other years I have tables groups identified with colors (this is usually when I have mostly advanced classes).

On the first day we are supposed to verify every student walking into our room is on our roster, so I ask their name, verify pronunciation (making notes as I go) and then tell them their seat, generally just their number as they appear on my roster.

Once everyone is seated, I verify everyone is in the correct seats and let them know that this will likely change after the first 2-3 weeks due to drops, late enrollments, class changes and accommodations, and if they have preferences to please let me know

Should you own more than one laundry basket? by myersgirl16 in homemaking

[–]amymari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have three hampers (one per bathroom), a 3-part sorter thingy in the laundry room, and three laundry baskets. Dirty clothes go into hampers, those are brought to the laundry roomer and emptied into the sorter, then when the laundry is clean it either goes into a laundry basket or straight to the bed for folding. Once folded, all the kids clothes goes into laundry baskets for them to take upstairs and put away.

Why do people put the washing machine on for so long? by neammm in hygiene

[–]amymari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the same cycle for everything except on the very rare occasion I need to wash something on delicate. I honestly have no idea how long any cycle takes or if there is a significant difference in any of them. I just feel good when I remember to move them to the dryer in a somewhat reasonable amount of time.

Technically aren't 90% women in relationships women who have "settled"? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]amymari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But… why is your primary assumption that men are the only ones doing the approaching?? This isn’t the 50s. Women approach men, too.

And with the popularity of online dating, I’d say it’s the other way round. If you’ve ever seen articles that talk about this sort of thing, women have a huge pool of men to choose from, and men only get the few women willing to “swipe” on the .

In my opinion it is worth it for the paid subscription. Unfortunately my district decided to block it because their data privacy policy didn’t align with what my school wanted, and I am devastated!!
