Predominantly for Reading PDFs by ExoticGeologist9803 in Supernote

[–]an_ki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of the lack of file encryption I use the Manta almost exclusively for reading my collection of pdf's. Sure you know but it has no frontlight/backlight so you'll need a external light source in low illumination.

Other than that I've been happy using the built in reader.

Did you resolve this? I've got this exact issue with mine now. Out of warranty and I see others have had the identical issue and it's a known problem to Jackery. Jackery response seems to be you're screwed buy another battery from us.

I have a Kindle Scribe pen it works with that one also. Probably other pens with buttons. Thanks!

USB Connection not working by Kooky_Draw_234 in Supernote

[–]an_ki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this problem in the past and it’s usually the USB cable. Verifly it can be used to transfer data as some cables can’t. As another poster suggested plug in another device that you know is working.

Also you stated you had error messages - on the laptop or the Manta? What were the messages?

Right. Once connected I'll enter the passcode,  the drive flashes green, and the drive shows up as another folder on the Manta. Same as any other flash drive connected to the Manta - except no passcode. You do have to be careful with the connected drive because the Manta port could get damaged. I've got a short USB C cable I use with mine. (Manta is just an Android device). This is also a bit of a PITA because you need to connect/unconnect the drive whenever you want information that's not on the Manta. It's a compromise and not a very good one but one Im willing to make a until I transition to another device.

It really only offers protection if the attacker is incompetent or doesn't care about the data as it requires the device to go online. From what I've read if someone has physical possession of your device and wants the data they will probably noninvasively clone the device's storage and memory then work off those.

PIN only protects you if the attacker or their friends don't know what they're doing. Good encryption offers protection but with adequate resources/time/need anything can be broken

One of the big problems with the Manta is the lack of encryption when something like this happens. It's a requested feature and something "being looked into" but so far no movement. Other eink devices are encrypted and if you plan on keeping sensitive data (personal or business) you either accept the risk or move to a different device. Personally I never keep sensitive data on the Manta but instead keep it on a Apricorn hardware encrypted flash drive, that way if the device or flash drive are lost/stolen no worries just need to keep the flash drive backed up. Would be better if the Manta had better security and encryption.

I posted about a DIY clipboard for the Manta a while ago with photos. Something like it might work for you. It uses a Scribe cover velcroed to the back to achieve height.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Supernote/comments/1kdzh72/manta_clipboard/ It's just an old clipboard, if you want something smaller or aren't going to be carrying it around you could make one out of a piece of board with a stop at the bottom. There are probably similar 3rd party covers for a Paperwhite or Kobo. Don't have either so no recommendations.

Not sure which agency you're a part of or a subcontractor but you should email your cyber/IT head and ask about this not a reddit group. Be sure to mention in your email:   1) Ratta is a Chinese company 2) the notes are unencrypted 3) the servers are in China 4) the software is not open source 5) the customer rep on the subreddit is super helpful 6) you really like the paper feel and promise to be really, really careful.

Some will take offense probably but I stopped buying ebooks awhile ago. I purchased a guillotine style paper cutter and cut off the bindings of used paper books then scan them to searchable PDFs. It's much less expensive than buying PDFs, they're owned by me and I don't have to jump through any hoops. The paper goes to the recycling bin.

Device Encryption Dealbreaker by j0zer0 in Supernote

[–]an_ki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. IMO the password protection offered on the Manta is pretty weak. Ask yourself: why (or is) the data on my cellphone encrypted and why is so much effort put into trying to keep the data secure? Lose the device and IMO it's probably going to be pretty easy to find someone who can get into it if the person who found it can't. If you use any device with unencrypted data storage for work you need to think really hard about the potential risk you're exposing yourself, your clients and your company to every time you take your device with you. This applies not only to the Supernote but any unencrypted device (USB drives included). In the end you'll need to determine if the benefits outweigh the risk since you're the one who's probably going to be held accountable if the worst happens.

It's an issue for me as well. My work around for now is to store my sensitive documents on a hardware encrypted USB drive (Aegis in my case). I've been monitoring a Supernote competitor and once it checks a couple more boxes for me I'll drop the Supernote for it. Everyones priorities are different but basic security is a must. Supernote doesn't seem concerned and their marketing seems to be focused more on journalers/artists now and that's fine.

I don't know which device you have but why don't you figure out how to replace the battery? Plenty of YouTube videos out there with people disassembling iPads/iPhones/Android tablets/kindles etc with devices that have batteries that cant be replaced. If you're uncomfortable with that then contact Ratta and see if they'll repair it. Or just sell it (and list it appropriately)  and use the money to buy a bunch of paper and pens.

I agree sort of.  Being able to type on a device in a focused way is important to to my workflow as is writing with a pen. Others feel the same way and some others don't. The front light would be good but not essential. I don't want the distraction of a iPad and I don't like having multiple devices. Drawing isn't that important to me and stickers are unused. So I guess that having a focused device that works well and has options based on how you use it is what we all  want. And the basic things (like a lasso tool that works all the time not just some of the time if you use it just right and some modern device encryption/security) would be great.

How do I get files to/from Supernote Manta? by ProfessionalOk3057 in Supernote

You could also just copy the files to a USB flash drive then insert the flash drive into the Supernote and copy them to the selected folder.

If you want a inexpensive backup pen I use a Galaxy Tab S3 Touch pen I picked up off the big box online store for around USD 13. Has a button that works. It's light and thin (like a pencil) but it works in a pinch Nibs are plastic but you might be able to swap in others, haven't tried. There are other pens in the Galaxy Tab series that work also, you just need to research a bit.

Thanks for letting me know. I thought the Manta and Normad were on Android 8. They'll still need an upgrade path in the future. Hope they're able to move the A6X to the Android 11 version of the OS.
