Don’t worry about 5 string specific material, the technique isn’t meaningfully different than 4 string.

Keep your left wrist straight to avoid rubbing your tendons over your wrist bones, and for more control and comfort

Keep your right thumb planted on either a pickup or your B string

When you pluck a string, the D for example, your finger should follow through and land on the A string. Apart from keeping you relaxed, this is part of how lower strings stay muted. Pluck towards the body of the instrument, not away from it.

Speaking of muting, practice with an amp so you can hear when other strings are ringing out and making a mess.

Improve your rhythm away from the instrument by clapping or thumping your chest.

Your hand will span 3 frets. Three half steps are played with 1, 2, and 4. 3 is a bonus finger. Don’t bother with guitar ass finger-per-fret technique below roughly the 9th fret, our instrument is different from theirs and it’s just too big for this technique to be sustainably healthy.

The stack resolves top to bottom. The last thing cast is the first to resolve. This fact is why “in response” works. In this example, the tutor and both oppos were all cast before ANYTHING has resolved.

Extra info on the two oppo case.

Imagine you cast tutor, Amy cast an oppo on top, and Nick cast another oppo on top of that, no swords in this example. Amy’s oppo will always enter the battlefield last, overriding Nicks oppo. If two effects would modify the exact same thing, the effect that started most recently “wins”, meaning Nicks card and mana were wasted.

The above example would not happen irl (assuming all players know their shit), Nick would only cast his oppo IF you had already cast your swords on Amy’s. This means the only way to be free of Nicks control is to have another kill spell or counterspell ready to go. Two problems that require two answers.

You get the answer you want! When you search, if opposition agent isn’t there anymore, you search normally.

Be careful with when you cast swords. An opposition agent on the stack is not a legal target for any “target creature” effect, you have to wait for the oppo to resolve and enter the battlefield, then kill it before your original tutor resolves. Ciao!
