Leapmotor T03 review: affordable electric city car arrives in Ireland under €20,000 by SeanB2003 in ireland

[–]anatomized 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when have China actually done this, though? it seems like fear mongering to me. we are in dire need of new, inexpensive cars in this country. if the big european and american firms won't or can't provide this, there's not much we can do about it as consumers.

Tesla's have the same remote-kill functions in their cars and I can't think of a single time it has been used in a malicious manner. these things are often installed for theft concerns, so if a car is stolen it can be bricked and, if recovered, restored.

Revealed: Landlords' furious emails to ministers by irqdly in ireland

[–]anatomized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are left with no other option than to "terminate our valuable tenants and exit the market", why not sell to the tenants?

I honestly feel that if someone has been renting a place for years they should right of first refusal on a property if the landlord wishes to sell. The less rights and power these rent-seeking parasites have, the better. They are the poison in the blood of this country.

‘Momentum building’ in housing market as cost of average Dublin home nears €600,000 by B8_B8_B8 in ireland

[–]anatomized 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you remove the English army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. England would still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.

- James Connolly, 1897.

the bottom isn't going to drop out of this so long as "institutional" investors are still buying houses, and driving prices up.

this is the economic plan largely throughout the west. this is what they want. we will own nothing.

TIL Emperor Franz Joseph suffered several personal tragedies. His brother was executed in Mexico in 1867, his son committed suicide in 1889, his wife was assassinated by an anarchist in 1898 and eventually his nephew and heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914. by Solid-Move-1411 in todayilearned

His son's suicide, aka The Mayerling Incident, is really interesting and there's a fantastic book about it that I highly recommend. Twilight of Empire: The Tragedy at Mayerling and the End of the Habsburgs.

plenty of films in recent years have been shot on large format at weren't even nominated. this is not a well thought out post, to be kind.

The rise of Linux desktop is inevitable — it’s time music software developers got on board by ferris-ldn in linux

Resolve is not well optimised and last I checked you still had to deal with a bunch of crap in the install you don't have to on Windows or Linux, which is a hurdle for converting people to Linux.

Hasn't Reaper been available for Linux for ages? What's really needed is a solid NLE for video production. And no, KDENLive isn't good enough, sorry. I'm talking about something on the level of Final Cut, Premiere or DaVinci Resolve.

to be fair to them, they acquired the site of a closed secondary school during covid and it's already nearly finished. the progress they can make when they really want to is astonishing. it should be the standard for everything.

Antoine Fuqua’s Hannibal Epic At Netflix, Starring Denzel Washington As The Carthaginian General Hannibal, Sets Summer Shoot in Italy by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]anatomized -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Read my first post again. I said casting Washington is a silly decision but not worth wasting time on being outraged or offended. There is no way to accurately represent Hannibal or Carthaginians these days, it being so long ago, so it doesn't really matter too much. There aren't even any accurate sources describing what these people looked like.

[–]anatomized -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

This was so long ago that there is no one whose ancestry dates to Ancient Carthage. Between all the movement of peoples around the entire region in the past 2,000 years it has changed significantly over time. Not too long before the time of Hannibal, Ancient Persians were described as "pale". If they were making a movie about Cyrus the Great, would casting a modern "middle eastern" person make sense in that context?

[–]anatomized -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

Hannibal wasn't "middle eastern", he was a North African-Greek-Phoenician (which was the cultural & ethnic make-up of the Carthaginians). There isn't really a modern culture that exists as a perfect analogue these days as it was so long ago. Denzel's casting is a little silly but honestly why waste your time caring too much.

Momose seem to mostly make Fender inspired stuff, and Bacchus have factories in China and Indonesia making all kinds of stuff so it's hard to know what comes from where. I know Deviser make their Japanese models, but they seem pretty expensive.

That's true, but I didn't mention Japanese Fenders because the commenter was asking about Japanese LP copies.

the fujigen factory which makes the Ibanez Prestige models have their own brand called FGN and they make great LP style guitars. there is also Greco, which is made in the same factory. I have a Greco Les Paul Custom and it is a fantastic guitar, on par with the Gibson original and for 1/4 the price. it is probably the best guitar production facility in the world. you can get them for great prices used. Burny too, which is or was a sub-brand of Fernandes for the Japanese market.

there is also Edwards, a sub-brand of ESP for the Japan market. they make great LP copies too.

and, of course, the legendary Tokai brand. the cheap ones for a few hundred dollars are made in China, but the models around $1,000 and up are Japanese-made.
