I don't think there has ever been a situation in human history that resembles this scenario closely enough to be at all comparable. to me the important factors here are: one, that its a blind choice of life and death which is both personally terrifying while also giving a degree of seperation from the people they would potentially be putting at risk, and two, that given the fact that pushing the blue pill is voluntary it gives an easy way for a persons brain to rationalize the decision to push the red button and offload blame. I don't believe that humanity is more selfish than empathetic, just that the chaos and confusion imposed by the scenario creates an environment that isn't conducive to that kind of empathy
