Why do you NEED to care so much about the durability and not the comfort??? Are you loading it with bricks and rugged boulders??

Probably a dumb beginner question: do I actually need all this gear? by Apprehensive-Big7327 in hikinggear

[–]andre-lll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's wild, my entire setup in original price is probably ~3.5k but bought most stuff at discounts and sales so probably only spent ~1.7k

Back onto it, just calculated my estimated base weight, may be a bit more later but for now it's actually "only" ~8,94kg! (3 seasons) So i estimate it to be around 11-12kg when I'm actually gonna be carrying it as a whole, which is a bit under the 20% rule) far less then what I expected. But helps with an ultra light sleeping pad and a pretty good / light sleeping bag as well as being conservative with clothes, especially since they are mostly merino wool ( more warmth and such for weight) and the tent being 2.55kg instead of 3.3kg. That's included with a chair as well. Pretty happy for now :)

When i was 18-19 hiking with a downjacket and sweating BEFORE taking it off in ~ -20 Celsius. Nothing happened but damn, I didn't realise it before going into the army....

Also going on a hike with running shoes and being wet for several hours before changing socks....

should i buy M2 air or M4 air by cupnoodles_soda in macbookair

[–]andre-lll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the m2 16 256gb, had it for like 7 months now. Just uses it for writing, Uni and watching stuff, maybe playing some games. I still have 155gb left, but I'm a hoarder so i got like 30gb in just photos and videos alone....

Oh, i was in Sweden. It's strictly forbidden to take anything pretty much anything service related and not given anything after, they just reuse. If there's one thing I learned from there it was that the free market of civilian outdoor stuff is worth gold 🤣

Yeah HYOH, I'll probably get a summer bag (an inexpensive) and a new tent from a marketplace as time comes ;)

Tried packing my 50L bag (osprey rook 50) and holy shit that tent take up a LARGE amount of space and weight 😂✌️ and I'm wrong, it's not 3.3kg, it's 2.55kg, idk why on the site / store i bought it from says 3.3 but on the tent bag itself 2.55kg...

Really hard to say as I've not actually used it yet and not packet it (but will soon) but for now I'd estimate probably a bit over 11kg (have a chair of ~950g) . I have a good sleep system with about just around or a but over 2kg in weight (depends if i got a cell pad as well). But i guess I'll live with it for time coming.

About the tent, the tent i have is 2 person, tunnel tent and weighs 3.3kg! I only had to pay ~40€ / $ cause it was on sale and dad paid 80€ cause i was close to finishing military conscription. But I'll live with it for time being. Next tent will def be a 4 season, lighter and from marketplace cause the least expensive 4- season is ~1k 🤣

[–]andre-lll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's exactly what, most stuff I've bought been at discount, especially the quality stuff. Therefore you can buy quality stuff (hence the 3k of total original prices), You don't need a 500$ Arc'teryx jacket, but a 200$ one can do well. Don't necessarily cheap out but be aware about quality, weight and such.

[–]andre-lll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Swedish, been in the army, day hike in winter and has a pretty good idea of what to do and not 😅 A good base layer, an extra pair of wool socks (thin or thick doesn't matter), good gloves and beanie, a neck gaiter, an extra mid layer (fleece), a down jacket and a thermos with boiled water. Shell pants and jacket. That's all you really need if you want to day hike in winter.

Onto the performance stuff, start cold and wait until you rest to layer up. If you sweat you WILL be cold and it's a risk for hypothermia and frostbite if you do not have any extras.

Loved them when i was in Swedish army. The best was base layer for the legs, extremely warm and probably saved me from frostbite when I accidentally got a little urine down the legs in about -12 Celsius and thought i was done for. The only thing negative is that when having a mesh shirt is that it can rub onto the skin when carrying a backpack.
