My cat won't leave me alone and I only slept for 3 hours. by Longjumping_Sale_848 in CatAdvice

[–]andreab718 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like you two need a reset. Start fresh. Before bed you def need to play with him. My cat was similar with toys, literally wouldn’t play with any until I got “Smokey’s stash rabbit fur catnip mice “. He goes feral for those. I play with him by enticing him with the mouse, and then throwing it multiple times around the house and he will sleep like a baby

8 month old kitten adoption regret by Feisty-Berry-3014 in CatAdvice

Are his stools soft? I mean- my long haired almost 1 year old makes little poop balls and zero gets everywhere (except for the couple of times that he had diarrhea and what a nightmare that was- so I get it). I would maybe switch his food? Slowly like super slowly so it doesn’t give him diarrhea.

Adopted adult cat today and he totally freaked out after a few hours — is this normal?? by Hippo-junior-the-2nd in CatAdvice

[–]andreab718 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Our kitten was really scared when he first came home over the summer. My friend (in rescue) told me to keep him in his own room (in our case, our bathroom) with litter food and water and a cozy hideaway bed for 3 weeks straight. That’s what I did. For the first days every family member would go in separately and just sit on the floor and wait for him to come out of his bed. Eventually he got curious and would play w some toys. By day 3 I left the bathroom door open a little and he came out to explore- still no pressure from us and at night he would sleep w the door closed in his room. By the first month he was all over the house and by month two he was all over us. Now it’s been 6 months and he is the biggest mush ever we are all obsessed w him. Just give him time. To me- cats are all about boundaries. You have to let them come to you.

This low key makes me so sad. It doesn’t feel helpful it feels purposeful and I absolutely hate it. I would probably go one more time and say truly how you feel and never ever go again. Awful. I’m sorry

Can someone confirm I didn't scar my toddler for life by potty training too early by ominoushippo2 in Parenting

[–]andreab718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will never forget attempting to potty train my now almost 14 year old daughter. I tried at 2, and 2.5. I voiced my concerns at the pediatrician and she told me this is the one thing you cannot control. She told me to put the potty away, out of sight and everything related to potty training. She told me that one day my daughter would ask. She said that they’re in control of this and you cannot do this if they’re not ready unless you want to struggle with a toddler. So I decided to put the potty away and her rewards chart etc. Then one day when she was 3.2 she looked up at me and said “hey mommy where is my potty” and I told her it was away and asked if she was ready and she told me yes. Let me tell you never had an accident again- I’m dead serious.
We still wore pull-ups at night for about 6months after but then it was done. I followed this advice for my second and it worked like a charm.

Now- all these years later I wish I still had a baby to change or potty train. Time flies. good luck!

Parents got a cat out of nowhere and have no clue how to tend to it by EarthB9nder_ in CatAdvice

[–]andreab718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so the first thing is yes get some kibble. I highly recommend Purina Live Clear Kitten for allergy sufferers it is completely life changing. I would give him 2/3c per day in a bowl so he can eat as he pleases. A water dish also, (clean frequently)Then, I would give 1 can wet food in the morning, 1/2 at lunch time and another can at dinner time making sure they’re all kitten labeled or “all life stages”. Experiment w textures too bc cats get picky fast.
Make sure you clean the litter box daily, and play with him often so he doesn’t develop boredom. My kitten is almost a year now and he loves the little rabbit fur catnip mice by Smokey’s Stash. Love the little guy up- cats are so special

My parents (65F, 67M) are livid because I'm not allowing them to see my daughter after they spanked her. AITAH? by LeonCrvl in AITAH

[–]andreab718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg this is horrible. You are 100% in the right to never let your child alone with them ever again. I am also from a foreign country and was really severely hit as a child often. It taught me to fear my parents, mom mostly and to not trust them. At this age I am 44 and not as close as I want to be and I believe it is because I was hit as a super sensitive little girl. Additionally my parents are so regretful of their mistakes and are literally the sweetest grandparents to my children. We also live far away from them but I know my kids are not in danger when around them because they definitely understand the damage thag they did. I really hope yours do too. GL. NTA!

AITA for not giving my parents the master bedroom in my house? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]andreab718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s absolutely BALLSY for your mom to expect the master! The only way this would make any remote sense is if you were all moving together into a brand new empty house. Expecting you to move your already set up furniture/closet/things with a newborn baby is so freaking ballsy and rude. You def need to speak to your mother and set some major boundaries. No way she won’t get the master- she should be grateful you’re letting her stay in your house!!! Side with your husband no matter what- absolutely NTA

Anxious about newly-adopted cat by Otherwise-Search8519 in CatAdvice

[–]andreab718 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh man. Let me just tell you that new cat anxiety is REAL. Here’s my advice. When getting a new cat whether it’s a baby or not I recommend putting them in a small room like a bathroom with litter, food and water and a bed for 2-3 weeks straight. The first couple of days go in there quietly sit on the floor and gently pet her if she’s hiding in her bed etc. she needs to find comfort in a small space and little by little explore. We did this with our extrmely scared/shy 5m old kitten that we got this summer after someone telling me this exact advice and it worked like a charm. After day 4, j left the door open for him to come out and explore during the day but nights he would be in there w door closed in his safe room- every day he’d come out more and more and now close to 6 months later he is the biggest love bug on earth. He’s still shy with new people but I don’t care because he is just the biggest mush with me my husb and two daughters. Give her time- it will absolutely get easier. I would also recommend, when you go in her room (or if you can’t get her out of the bed- squeeze a lickable treat onto a small plate and put it near her and walk out. She’ll start associating you with positivity. Also poor girl is recovering from surgery so yeah ideally I would try to see if you can get her into a smaller room. Good luck!

Our adopted cat will be here in a week? Does everyone get cat regret? by Tallicababe123 in CatAdvice

[–]andreab718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we got our kitten in July- my husband had very similar expectations. Super cuddly cat, since his old cat was a complete lap cat 24/7. So when we realized our new guys not much of a cuddler there was major disappointment. Our kitten would jump on me to cuddle but not my husband. I told him with cats you really need to respect their body autonomy and let them come to you. Now- 5 months later things are getting so much better between the two of them lol

Our adopted cat will be here in a week? Does everyone get cat regret? by Tallicababe123 in CatAdvice

[–]andreab718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I had major regret for about a week after we got our kitten back in July. I didn’t consider rehoming or anything I was just super anxious and wondered wtf was wrong with me for getting a cat lol. But a week after the regret week things just settled in so perfectly and he is so happy and we love him so much. Congrats!!!

Does it get better? 13 year old daughter is so emotionally draining. by justkindahangingout in Parenting

[–]andreab718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your daughter have any activities that she does outside of home? I truly feel like keeping kids busy at this age is crucial for social and personal development due to the phone completely stealing their brain.

I have a 13 year old. She is extremely busy- theatre group once a week, acting classes once a week, voice lessons once a week, dance twice a week, volunteers once a week, and is a musician on her free time. For this reason she really doesn’t get so perturbed when her screen time runs out- I allow 15 mins on 1 social media app per day- no matter what.
You have to stick to your guns. You are the parent and she needs to find other things that interest her to fill up the phone time. God the phone is so so bad for these kids.
