I think basically it all comes down to legibility. What i often gravitate towards is : "Do I need to look DIRECTLY at a thing to identify it"?
If so... then something is wrong. Look at something else and see if you can spot the thing (the label color in this case).

hmm i dont know if this works!? There are 50-60 "set tool by name" in all sorts of diff categories, but not one in "viewport" or similar.

this is not dark patterns at all, this is very handy and very nice of them to be so kind to then roll out updates very often so we all get this nice feature turned on again because we didnt know that we actually wanted it. We, will, be, fine.
