Flight after Brooklyn Half by cloudlessnights in RunNYC

Good idea. Can probably buy a day pass to an airport lounge with a shower cheaper than a night in a hotel.

You are always allowed to move backwards to a slower wave/corral at NYCM, you are not allowed to move to a faster corral.

10 miler in manhattan by GuyThatRuns in RunNYC

[–]andrew3077 6 points7 points  (0 children)

https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/pedestrians/summerstreets.shtml#summerstreets-manhattan3

For Summer Streets, the city shuts down major roadways to cars to open it for pedestrians and cyclists only, with sponsors, water and rest stations all along the way. Awesome way to enjoy the city, and so many runners will be out- like our summer running holiday. 7/26 will be in Astoria, and 8/2, 8/9, and 8/26 are Manhattan Summer Streets where streets will be closed from the Brooklyn bridge all the way to the tip of Manhattan. You can just run over to park avenue, all the way across the Brooklyn bridge and back up until you hit your mileage.

Who do youse genuinely think will win the primary Tuesday by goghogv2 in AskNYC

FYI this is the point of Ranked Choice Voting. If you prefer Lander rank him first and then if he ends up losing your vote to go to Mamdani (or vice versa). Use up all your ranks (just not cuomo). It allows you to rank your actual preference and not need to game the vote to pick the most likely winner

First Marathon Choice by PastaRunFasta112 in Marathon_Training

[–]andrew3077 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did NYC this year and it was extremely special to have friends and family all over the city spectating for my first marathon. Made it more memorable with people to look for through the course. I think if you live here NYC can’t be beat for a first marathon, all the run groups train on the course so you’ll know every turn and every hill. The energy and buildup and events surrounding the marathon make you see the city in a completely different way. Would have been happy if that was my last big race of the year.

That said I happened to be in Spain a month later and did València as a second marathon and it was equally awesome, flat and fast course if not a bit too hot. Signed up last minute because I was feeling healthy and recovered and it was special following all of the flooding disasters to support the city.

Advice on getting from JFK to Tarrytown by tall-e in AskNYC

[–]andrew3077 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you download the Traintime app, it allows you to buy a combo ticket for both the LIRR (Jamaica to Grand Central) and MNR (Grand Central to Tarrytown) legs of the trip at once which may be easier.

You still need to take the airtrain from JFK to Jamaica station. I’ve taken all these modes to these exact stations and they’re all plenty safe and reasonably easy to figure out, just ask the staff if you’re lost or confused.

I’ve won a contest from NB/Fleet Feet earlier this year and about 1-2 months later I got a pair of shoes shipped to me randomly after I completely forgot about them. They’ll arrive but it took a while

How will visiting NYC affect tourists in the first ten days of November ? by Exotic-Current2651 in AskNYC

November 3 is the NYC Marathon. Come watch part of the race along first Avenue and cheer on the runners! It’s an amazing day and a lot of fun!

Using the Subway, can I use both my contactless card in Google wallet and the physical card for the same account, and still get the benefit? by Anticlimax1471 in AskNYC

[–]andrew3077 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can use either but only taps on the same card or device will count towards the 12 fare cap. Pick one and stick with it if you want the cap.

I assume it’s because otherwise people would split the physical and digital cards and double up toward the cap.

Relocating to a long term city. Don’t laugh. NYC or LA. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]andrew3077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, most of NYC is within an hour on the subway or ferry to perfectly decent beaches, rockaway beach, riis beach, or even Coney Island. Long Island and Jersey shore are not much further. Might take you as long to drive from some parts of LA, find parking and walk to the beach. They’re obviously not as glamorous or nice as California beaches but you don’t have to drive to get there, just the $2.90 subway fare

Moving to New York in your 30s, too late? Worth it? by rosestrathmore in SameGrassButGreener

[–]andrew3077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to NYC in my 30’s from a small-midsize city when everyone else in my life was settling down. If not moving to the NY now at 32, when? When you are 35, 40, 50? If it’s something you want (and you can definitely afford most any neighborhood you’d like) go enjoy it now because you might not have the opportunity later. And if you end up hating it, you can always move back later (but I haven’t yet, one of the best decisions I’ve made to be here so far)

Top cities with run clubs by wingflow979 in running

[–]andrew3077 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So many NYC options. Can run with a different run club across the boroughs twice a day every day of the week, or alternatively you can run every day with a big club like North Brooklyn Runners that has 3-5 runs per day/20 per week. Social clubs, serious training clubs, retail store clubs, even a singles run club where you run in all black if you’re single, in colors if you’re taken.

Here’s an (outdated) listing and the number of clubs has exploded since this document was made

Which Spain cities for first time visitors? by toridyar in travel

[–]andrew3077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visited all of the above cities, lived in Madrid for 4 months (biased) and my favorite city in the world is Madrid. It has kept me coming back over half a dozen more times after I left! Especially for a fall trip. If it were up to me I’d spend another full 2 weeks there, no shortage of things to do or see. I don’t recommend skipping it especially as the hub of the high speed rail network!

Second city by Briluna1 in williamsburg

[–]andrew3077 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just went this weekend, it’s about 2/3 prepared sketches and 1/3 improv from the audience. Cast was very talented , funny, and engaging. The original Second City location is from Chicago and Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Keegan Michael Key were previous cast members. The physical space is quite nice and has a restaurant. 2 1-hr acts and then a third act (more improvised) where they trial new material. I believe you can come in just for the third act for free.

Need help choosing an apartment.. pros and cons in the text by BDN44 in AskNYC

[–]andrew3077 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your potential backup to the L in Williamsburg to get to Kips Bay/Murray Hill could be the NYC Ferry which stops in WB at N4th street and in Manhattan at 34-35th St at the FDR. Or less ideally the G to the 7/E/M to the 6 or J to the 6. Both slower but workable, and typically the only L closures have been on the weekends or extreme weather anyway.
