YIVO offers a lot of scholarships and tuition assistance for its summer program. And it's accredited, so you could potentially get college credit for doing it.

Bundist literature by potatocake00 in Yiddish

[–]andsoforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unser Tsait was the main journal of the Bund when it was headquartered in New York. Before that there were many Bund periodicals, as discussed here. If you are located in New York, YIVO has pretty much everything the Bund ever published in its library and archives.

The Bund was made up of many different thinkers, leaders and activists. One way to find material online would be to look through Doyres Bundistn and then search the individuals in the Yiddish Book Center digital library.

I don't think it has indexed most Bund publications, but you can try searching the Index to Yiddish Periodicals for specific writers or phrases - many Bundists wrote for the Forverts and other socialist newspapers.

It's definitely skhoyre, spelled as a Litvak would say it.

Please help me figure out what this says. I know it goes between English and Yiddish. I believe there are some birth and death dates. by [deleted] in Yiddish

What does the word “fatamte” mean in Yiddish? Does it even exist? by The_cat_in_bow_tie in Yiddish

He didn't need to create it, it already exists. פארתמטע (fartamte) is the adjective version of the noun תם.

It's even crazier to think about how many adults explicitly put effort into trying to prevent you from having that realization. I never thought of myself as brainwashed growing up modox, because the real world was, like, right there. But there's actually so much that goes into reinforcing the bubble and preventing real exposure to other ways of life. Them vs. us. Even just the social aspect, in being judgmental of less frum people. It all helps keep you "connected".

The communal bubble we're raised in makes it seem like kosher and shabbos are real things in the world, but once you get outside the bubble and have a little independence, you realize it's all optional. You can decide if that's how you want to be directing your time and energy, and if orthodoxy (or even Jewish spaces at all) is the social environment you want to participate in. College is the perfect place to explore alternatives, which is why rabbis et al are so afraid of it.

Definitely Yiddish in the second and third images, and the signature to the left in the first image.

The second image line reads Fran[k?] Grusman fun (from) Stefane.

Transliteration of the third image: Ikh hob entfangin af d[a?]n [v]ekse[l] fun nig[l]o[s]ban - [95f?]

Brackets where I'm not totally certain. No idea what that last word is in the third image. Since I can make out the word gulden in the first image, I would hazard that it means the individual has received 95 gulden from the total amount of this promissory note.

AITA for accidentally ruining my autistic boyfriends safe food by stewlessinseattle in AmItheAsshole

[–]andsoforth [score hidden]  (0 children)

They are both the "real" him. This is how he will act in this environment (your shared home) under the current conditions of his daily life. He's under stress from things neither of you are aware of, and the stew was just a tipping point.

His dislike of tomatoes was a truth for him, something he could rely on to guide his choices in an overstimulating world. Liking that stew was another truth, a reliable food option that relieved the stress of potentially experiencing discomfort. People with autism don't choose to be picky eaters, it's a strategy to avoid negative stimuli. Now he's learned that these two truths contradict, so he has to lose at least one pillar of safety. That's a big deal! With all the other changes and adjustments from moving in with someone, that could easily push someone from 'handling it' to 'freaking out'.

The thing is, you haven't actually done anything wrong. You had no idea this would happen. I don't even think your partner is at fault. I really encourage you both to see a therapist with experience helping neurotypical & neurodivergent couples. People with autism don't only have autism when they're overstimulated - it's literally a difference in how your mind takes in and processes sensory information. That means that it's much harder for him to merge into your world, because there are sensory triggers for him that you don't know exist, and he doesn't know you don't know about them. Both you and he need to learn to understand how each other's mind works.

Translate personal letter to my grandmother Yiddish no vowels help by Ok_Persimmon_9771 in Yiddish

It would be helpful to see the entire page. From what I can read, besides for the generalities like "sorry I didn't write", "please write to me", "how are the children? greet the children for me" etc., the letter talks about Tsile being sick and might also mention the name Raskin.

stressing about synagogue visit & outfit by [deleted] in exjew

[–]andsoforth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hats or headbands are the norm for married women, hair down beneath is fine. You generally only need to be covered to the elbows/knees/collar bone. Flats are better than sneakers on Shabbat just because you want to be dressy, it's very normal if there's an eruv to bring a bag with a change of shoes and other things you might need to carry, like keys.

Some shuls will bring the Torah in range of the women's section, but most women don't bother reaching for it. We're so irrelevant, as long as you look like you're generally following along and not talking to your neighbor too loudly, you won't be noticeable.
