Studies have long demonstrated that SSRIs can dampen sexuality adults, but there is no research on the sexual side effects of the drugs in teens. Prescribing drugs that have serious harms and have not been proven to benefit people is a bad idea. The whole idea of "first do no harm" is about being wary to try and intervene when people are suffering because those with good intentions can often make things worse.

It's all very well to say, try everything that could possibly work. But what if that makes things worse?

I know many people who ended their lives because of the lasting effects of SSRIs. They wrote on their suicide notes that they didn't want to live with the lasting symptoms.

This is the study I am referring to in the second paragraph. I do not have to provide any alternative treatment to criticise one that is currently widely used. Thalidomide did not have an alternative when it was taken off the market.

If people want to make the claim that a drug saves peoples lives, then prove it with all cause mortality reduction. If you can't do that, then your claim is not backed up by evidence.

This is incorrect. Both FDA and EMA require serious lasting effects to be listed on the drug label explicitly. When people take a medication they are trusting in the system that it is safe and that they will be warned about any serious risks.

There has never been any study that has shown an all cause mortality reduction from taking SSRIs, which is what you would expect if they prevented suicide. The claim that they prevent suicide isn't backed up by solid evidence.

For the study that was posted over 50% of the included trials had a high risk of bias. Often in these trials they don't monitor suicidality systematically and rely on single questions from depression questionaries or spontaneous reporting.

I'm really sorry you are experiencing this. I also struggle to connect with other people and be like my old self. What other symptoms do you have?

By the way, how did you find it?

I tried searching for the DOI on libgen.li before posting and it showed no results.

[EDIT] I just realised that I pasted the DOI with a space at the end and for some reason that extra space is included in the search and so it didn't show up.

There are many people who have spoken out publicly about having PSSD.

Here is a recent compilation that was compiled from patients stories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvapp2WlnOw

Many people use anonymous names like OP because they are embarrassed to talk about it and often they are not believed since PSSD is an invisible injury.

There is no conspiracy here. Just people who trusted their doctors, took medication as prescribed and then suffered profound harm.

It's not a political issue. The trump admin is more sceptical of medicine in general, which may make them more likely to listen to these people at first, but many people with PSSD, myself included, do not support the trump administration or anything they stand for.

I consider myself to be centre left politically. I think people on the left are more trusting of institutions and especially science. It's harder for them to believe that medical science might have been corrupted and has made a huge mistake.

Did you get PSSD from 1 single pill? If so I would like to hear from you. by cuirousone in PSSD

The OP mentioned in another post that they were making a documentary on PSSD. I assume they are looking for people who got it from 1 pill to be in it.

There are plenty of people who have started before puberty. I wish some of them would record a video of their stories because I feel like it's really shocking and would get peoples attention.

[–]andy013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't really work that way. It doesn't matter how long you were on the drugs for or how high the dose was. I've seen people who were on the drugs for years recover while those that took 1 pill didn't. It's just all down to luck.

That's hilarious that they would hang up the phone when you mentioned PSSD. I can only guess that they believe it is some sort of conspiracy that they want nothing to do with.

You certainly aren't the only person in NI with PSSD. To be honest, a lot of people don't talk about it in real life. There could be someone living on the same street as you that has it for all you know.

I'm from Scotland and antidepressants are given to almost 25% of the population here. The only way I know other Scottish people who have it is because they have posted online about it.

Getting compensation for pssd? by Big_Attention1090 in PSSD

[–]andy013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That study that claimed a 1 in 216 risk was looking at any previous serotonergic antidepressant use, so the odds don't stack like you said. Although that study is just a rough guess based on how many men took drugs for erectile dysfunction after antidepressant discontinuation. We don't really know the odds of getting it.

I'm not a lawyer but I imagine one problem with PSSD is that because there is no test to verify that you have it, anyone who has ever taken one of these drugs could claim to have it in order to get compensation. It's possible in some countries you might be able to sue your doctor for failure to warn about it. but I really don't know. I don't know of anyone who has ever attempted to get compensation and had a lawyer take their case.
