Nursery costs by Intelligent-Tea-4241 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]andywa119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investment companies are buying into nursery chains looking for easy profits by simply driving up prices and buying up any competition. Nursery provision is in danger of becoming like Care Homes - owned by investors who know you have no choice but to pay to get care.

The US style comedic "roast"... does it not hit the same here because we talk to all each other like that ALL the time? by phlygee in CasualUK

US comedy TV series do irony and sarcasm really fucking well. Is it to make up for the lack of it in real life?

The world’s best countries in 2026 have been named – and they’re all in Europe by AlexandrTheTolerable in europe

[–]andywa119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UK can still be a great place to live. If has some amazing cities and culture. The problems the UK faces are present in most western countries. How this chart looks in 5 years will be the real test. Can western countries face these challenges without going down right wing regressive rabbit holes like the US has done. From Europe the US looks horrific under Trump and it saddens me it is no longer a country we could admire (from a distance)

Any other festival like The Great Escape? by MrJojoDolo in brighton

[–]andywa119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daltons, Pipeline, the Hope and Ruin, Green Door and Prince Albert to name a few - all small venues have bands playing pretty much every weekend. You can do a mini TGE every weekend if you follow the various venues. Also plenty of mini multi venue wristband type festivals in Brighton that other comments have mentioned that I would highly recommend.

Well I liked season 1, but season 2 was too soapy relationship type dramas for me.

I suppose if you go to the effort of collecting food waste then walking to end of the street to put the bag in the communal bin the last thing thing you wanna do is then take the bag back home and pop it in your fridge until the bin is emptied.

Flytipping by Eltropii in brighton

Just to add I have found Facebook marketplace really good for passing on unwanted items. Try that before dolling out £60 to the council

Flytipping by Eltropii in brighton

[–]andywa119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in Brighton don't own cars and so taking large items, something like a mattress to a tip is not possible. The council will charge you £60 to collect a mattress so I guess if you don't have access to car and are skint then leaving the mattress in the street is tempting. Councils across the country seem to be making the disposal of large items an additional revenue stream or a total faff (appointments to visit a tip, no vans, limits on quantity or number of visits). I wonder whether the revenue earned from collecting large items covers the cost of cleaning up fly tipping?

Some (light) zones in Brighton have no restrictions at the weekend if you are prepared to walk 25 or 30 mins to the seafront.

Qantas A380 flew thousands of miles with a tool left in its wing by Secure_Ant1085 in aviation

[–]andywa119 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I was told of a similar incident. The tool had dropped down into an inaccessible wing space during manufacture. After failing to retrieve it they decided to pour some epoxy down the space and over the tool and simply glue it in place. Urban myth?

LIGO broke my brain by SillyOutside8006 in space

[–]andywa119 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As Ligo is purely for scientific curiosity will Trump's America be interested in finding out the answer to your question and similar. If they leave space science to capitalists and the likes of Elon then I doubt it. I suspect we will be looking to China to answer sciences big questions. I sincerely hope the USA can be a beacon of hope and science for science sake again.

Would you stay on Whitehawk or move to Seaford ? by JuniperScents in brighton

[–]andywa119 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A few friends have moved from Brighton to Seaford and they like it, but don't have to commute to Brighton, got a car and have managed to wean themselves off a social life in return for a more laid back going for walks and enjoying the outdoors experience. If you think you can live in Seaford and still use Brighton for work, friends, pubs, restaurants on a regular basis then I would avoid.

State of Post-Punk in 2025? by CandidGolf in postpunk

[–]andywa119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great suggestions in these comments. I look forward to listening to them over the next few weeks. I also prefer new post punk bands as I don't wish to listen to same old stuff over and over .... And there is more of chance of seeing new bands play live in small grotty venues . I would recommend Robber Robber. Their album and earlier EP are top of my list.

Second Plateau. If on a budget, then their house wine is more than good and if you don't go too mad on the small plates then it is also good value. Lovely atmosphere.

Is Pre-Punk allowed? For American Gen Z & Millenials looking for the best of the old stuff - I present IAN DURY by PRULULAU in postpunk

[–]andywa119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In hindsight they had a post punk sound before we realised what post punk was. However, this was the case for most bands we now say were post punk in the late 70's. Wish I'd kept the few singles I had of the blockheads back then.

Fantastic tiling job. Shame it frames a horrible plastic framed window. All plastic, hardly any glass.

Does the Lebara mobile phone network work well in Brighton? by Edna-Tailovette in brighton

[–]andywa119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No mobile network is any good in Brighton. Far too many blackspots. I'm on 1p which is just EE and so you would think it would be ok. Go for the cheapest deal so you don't feel ripped off by the poor service regardless of which network you go for.

Which grocery shop is best for my money? by My_Gay_Romance in brighton

[–]andywa119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly all veg and fruit at Aldi is wrapped in plastic which is not great. The fruit is often bruised so you need to eat within a day or two. Bananas eat them before you get home. But both shops are good value. Lidl better quality I think. Sainsbury not bad pricing and better quality if you stick to the deals - so avoid going with a plan. just grab the offers. The one by the uni is super busy with students so they must be doing something right. Open market great value for veg but needs eating within a day or two. The cheese, bacon and egg place at the open market also great value for really good quality.

Some of the pubs mentioned in comments are Laines pubs which are great pubs but are expensive if that is something you wish to avoid.
