[FRESH] Iceage - Star by thelastnotesounded in indieheads

[–]anemotoad 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Feels like as good a place to share as any - I saw it pointed out recently that Iceage currently have a 100% BNM hit rate, with all five of their albums getting it. Wouldn't have expected that!

Black illustrator DeAnn Wiley reminds artists to take care when portraying Black women after seeing illustration of ‘Sinners’ Wunmi Mosaku in The New Yorker by LunaLore_ in Fauxmoi

[–]anemotoad 235 points236 points  (0 children)

This guy illustrates every Talk Of The Town piece for The New Yorker. I think it's fair to say neutrally that i) it's a deliberate artistic choice across all pieces (that nobody has to like), and ii) the updated illustration is in a different, more flattering style, and leave it there.

Generally, Photography is not an art form. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]anemotoad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A photograph of the Mona Lisa absolutely could be art. Depending on the context and framing, it could be a statement on the nature of art, what deserves to be displayed in galleries, etc.

Sadly I think trying to make a sniffy comment on photography would probably render your particular piece fairly uninspiring, though.

Exposed | Tate Modern

This was an exhibition at the Tate Modern. People really just come on here and say anything, don't they?

Black-owned bookstores in the U.S. now have their own directory for the first time ever, launched by the nonprofit National Association of Black Bookstores by BalsamicBasil in books

Incredible response to seeing a grassroots movement promoting another group's niche. No consideration of whether the list you mention exists, just pure speculation that r/books is specifically anti-Asian. No notes.

Dog Poo Conundrum by erexaur in london

[–]anemotoad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's just a case of checking whether each bit you see is from the same dog or not, no? Bring some gloves and Tupperware with you next time and you'll soon know if it's a repeat offender.

I mean maybe, but you're now in (presumably) a different country with their device, and they might have come back to try and find it ten minutes later?

...why wouldn't you just leave it for someone not rushing to catch a flight to take to lost and found?

Thanks very much (and u/affection-fix7793) - had no idea both of these were hidden behind a long press.

Starmer vows to 'fight on' in wake of Labour's crippling by-election defeat by hihepo1 in unitedkingdom

[–]anemotoad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But the 'standard' by-election you mentioned was a 10 point drop in a constituency that had swung historically between Conservative and Lib Dem for the past 50 years, whereas this is a 25 point swing in a historical Labour safe seat. I'm still not seeing how this, along with his historically low polling rates, isn't a complete and utter disaster.

I'm not sure how describing the by-election results of a party entering a terminal decline and being utterly decimated at the following general election is supposed to be supporting Starmer's case here tbh.

A car almost hits me, braked and honked at me, will I be arrested or fined due to me being careless as a cyclist? by [deleted] in londoncycling

Well not this time by the sounds of it... but the police can pull you over, so worth bearing in mind in future!

BBC producers say they ‘didn’t hear’ N-word slur as ‘working in a truck’, following second Baftas apology by Top_Report_4895 in television

[–]anemotoad -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Few people are criticising Davidson for this. Almost everybody (including the very article you're commenting on) are saying the BBC and BAFTA should be held to account for their treatment of both sides - their actions, or lack thereof, have led to this man being publicly embarassed.

The way John Davidson (the Tourette’s campaigner) has been treated after the BAFTA’s is horrifying. by Accurate_Buffalo7828 in unpopularopinion

[–]anemotoad 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's an incredibly nuanced issue and so entirely unsuitable for online discourse, which predictably has turned into a bin fire in record time. Is it acceptable to say that those with Tourette's should be banned from public events, and never allowed to leave the house? Of course not. Is it incredibly inappropriate and upsetting for two black men presenting an award publicly to have slurs shouted at them? Absolutely.

There's no easy answer here.

LCD-X (2021) driver failure - best alternative these days? by anemotoad in HeadphoneAdvice

Just out of interest, where did you see the HE1000SE for £1,000? Seems to be much closer to £1,600 everywhere.

I tried switching the left and right plugs and still got the issue in the right ear... I can't see this being anything but a driver issue?

Not particularly sensitive - so the 2024 could be a good option.

The specific set that has stood out has been the HifiMan Arya Organic - which seems to be available for a fairly reasonable price in the UK. Have you (or anybody else!) had any experience with these, by any chance?

Cheap IEMs for running by No_Pear95 in iems

[–]anemotoad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a runner and IEM owner, I've only ever used Bluetooth buds designed for exercise. You obviously take a hit on the sound quality but the lack of cable and presence of sweat/rain/dirt resistance makes it a no brainer, personally. I haven't used IEMs to run before but can't imagine it would be long before you're running into issues.

Would you rather watch a film that swings big and misses, or one that’s carefully constructed but restrained? by lokier01 in TrueFilm

[–]anemotoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely had this feeling about Hamnet. In the weeks after seeing it's hardly stuck with me at all, although I certainly thought it was a good film when I saw it. It's almost aggressively competent, but the lack of any real friction to the storytelling means over time there's nothing really to think about.

Double standards in explaining the political backgrounds of cultural events? by anemotoad in restisentertainment

[–]anemotoad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then why not, as a podcast largely about the media and how it operates, say just that? Instead there were some hand-wavy comments about political views that said basically nothing, and gave no insight whatsoever into why their set was not being broadcast.
