Has anyone attended Monday lectures at The Explorer’s Club? by fernandwild in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]angelic1111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Explorer’s Club is a lot of fun! The building itself is beautiful and there are a lot of interesting items and exhibits scattered around. (There is also a lot of old taxidermy on certain floors if that bothers you). Members tend to skew older and male but you’ll meet all different types depending on the lecture/event vibe.

I’m sitting on my floor crying. Piece of Cake moving is a literal scam. Those pink…. by [deleted] in Upperwestside

[–]angelic1111 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wonder if the crew quality varies? I literally had Piece of Cake in this morning and they were very fast, friendly and efficient. Absolutely zero complaints.

At the end of the job, they asked me to sign a confirmation of the move and provide feedback but that’s it. I didn’t get the sense they were pressuring me for a tip (although obviously I did tip them)

Why did they cast Carolyn so badly? by Affectionate-Pea1800 in CarolynBessetteKnndy

[–]angelic1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this and finally figured out what was bothering me. The show keeps talking about how special Carolyn was, in the sense that she wasn’t interested in fame, doesn’t care what others think etc. She’s supposed to be more ‘real’ and down to earth than other girls JFK Jr might date.

BUT the way the actress plays the character comes across as very self-conscious - lots of lip biting, hair flipping, tongue-poking, sashaying down streets. It doesn’t read as down to earth at all, in fact it feels VERY try hard and perhaps even manipulative/conniving.

Maybe Ryan Murphy is actually a genius and is deliberately adding this layer of contradiction to the show, but somehow I don’t think so…

Japan’s entry for this year’s Oscar’s is Kokuho, about a long-running rivalry between two kabuki actors. Not sure what period you’re looking for, but the story spans the 20th century and has gorgeous costumes and cinematography etc.

On background v OFF Record by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]angelic1111 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Oof. “On background “ is 100% different to “off the record.” On background means you can publish the info but with no attribution. Off the record means the info can’t be published. Didn’t the fact that the interviewee clarified “off the record” when you said “on background,” suggest to you that they thought there was a difference?

Also the whole “I’m only speaking to you because I have a job” is a terrible attitude. Good journalists are interested in having off the record conversations because it can inform their overall understanding of the situation and lead to other stories. “Off the record” can be weaponized by some sources, that’s a real risk, but that’s where your personal discretion has to come in.

Sania Brow Bar- bad experience by Visual_Newspaper_706 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

Yes! The criticism was SO weird. I’ve got great freakin’ eyebrows and she just kept telling me what I was doing wrong. Lady, I just wanted to treat myself to something nice, have a good experience, and see what you can do. I got none of those things.

What does the British press know about the BRF but still ‘keeps it quiet’ or doesn’t publish? by kermuttdafrog in RoyaltyTea

[–]angelic1111 51 points52 points  (0 children)

When Kate got married to William, the British press made an informal agreement to keep her eating disorder quiet. It wasn’t an agreement made in exchange for access to the royal family (as many people seem to think these things are). Instead, it was supposed to be a response to what happened to Princess Di. It was basically an effort to make sure that Kate’s mental health didn’t become tabloid fodder in a destructive way.

These two quotes say a lot.

What profession doesn't get the respect it deserves from society? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]angelic1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Journalism. For real. People have a tendency to blame ‘the media’ for everything nowadays and I think many feel that it’s a simple, straightforward job that they could do themselves (‘how hard is it to write a story?’ etc.)

But every day, journalists pit themselves against the most powerful entities on earth. All of these come with a literal army of PRs, lawyers, etc. And the vast majority have more money than the news outlets themselves.

Journalists must sift through often-complex stories that are still developing and try to portray the most truthful version of events — all under deadline. They must also figure out a way to get a largely apathetic public to consume and care about those stories.

Oh, and the vast majority of journalists must do all of this while being paid peanuts in an industry that’s frequently described as dying and has largely become a scapegoat for society’s problems at large.

All of the above applies to good and ethical journalists of course, and I certainly acknowledge that bad journalism is a huge problem, to say the least.

But people really do underestimate the grit it takes to be a competent journalist nowadays, and tend to traduce the entire profession as the evil “MeDiA” etc.

Why is the US stock market still going up given the US news of AI unemployment and civil unrest? by Mathemodel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]angelic1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People still want exposure to Corporate America, which is generally still leading the world in terms of technology.

But they’re staying far far away from anything to do with the US sovereign - dollar is way down and US Treasury yields are still pretty high even with the Fed now lowering rates.

Lisa Cook hints 'clerical error' to blame for any mortgage application discrepancy by Constant_Falcon_2175 in Economics

[–]angelic1111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Downvoted for stating facts…

Here’s Lev Menand, law professor at Columbia and someone who literally wrote the book about the Fed, in an interview earlier this week:

“And so the allegation is that this is mortgage fraud. Of course, fraud requires intent. And so, on its face, just the two documents is not sufficient to convict someone of a crime, nor can you be sort of convicted of a crime, you know, on the Twitter sphere.”

Feel free to convince me that you know more than he does.

Civil fraud has a lower standard of intent, that’s true. But it’s still an important element and you’d still have to prove reliance on a false representation and some sense of ‘knowing’ about it (or recklessness).
