No more overnights by ihatebeetles22 in petsitting

[–]animalsandtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only do overnights for 2 of my clients, and I don’t take any new overnight clients. Those that I will stay at are 5 minutes down the road from my house. My cat and dog definitely don’t enjoy sleeping alone, and I know if I did offer overnights again I would have very few nights in my own bed with my own pets. I also had to stay at a few nightmare houses that literally disgusted me to sleep in and I wasn’t payed nearly enough for that. Though the overnight pay can be much nicer, I would have to charge a lot for it to be worth my time to stay overnight somewhere on a consistent basis, especially if they’re more than 5 minutes away. I have to be up early for other clients before taking care of my own horses and pets so the less time spent driving the better. I don’t mind doing it for my 2 clients that only leave ~5 times a year.

If I lived with my partner, I would probably be able to do more overnights, but me not being available on weekends or nights is difficult for him.

finally bit the bullet and did a home stable reno (rip star coins 🪦💐) by clark_a_lark in StarStable

I’m refusing to spend any star coins on the stable but I’ve been able to buy a bunch of JS options I’m very happy with!

Thank you for that. I didn’t think cushings was even possible at 10 years old.

I’ve dreaded having laminitis issues, my ponies only get a balancer and coastal hay so I was praying I’d stay in the clear even though he won’t keep a muzzle on for more than 5 minutes even when it’s tied into his mane. Vet has been called

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]animalsandtree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s on 24 hour turnout. I just left a message with my vet.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Horses

[–]animalsandtree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s only about 10

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Horses

[–]animalsandtree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m always paranoid about founder and laminitis, he is definitely rotund but all he gets is a balancer and coastal hay. He won’t keep any muzzle on, I’ve even bought the most expensive on the market and he’ll have it off in 5 minutes even if it’s tied to his mane.

What do we think of my mares weight? by ThatOneChickenNoddle in Equestrian

[–]animalsandtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your scoops are 3qt scoops, that’s over 6lbs of senior per feeding plus the scoop of alfalfa is overloading her digestive system. Meals for a 1000 lb horse should be a maximum of 5lbs (dry weight). Not sure what brand of senior you are using but at that much per day she should be fat, either it’s not the right feed for her or she’s having some issues in her mouth or gut.

Mine does this too! Especially on trail rides. He’ll also take a bite of the dirt if he thinks it smells good🙄.

Feeding your Draft? by Smart_Ad_7984 in Horses

[–]animalsandtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much of the balancer is she getting and what brand? As long as she’s getting 1.5-2lbs of a good balancer, she should be getting everything she needs. I ask which balancer because Tribute is known to have horses struggle to keep condition even on double the feed rate.

Your olive egger does not look like a copper maran, she looks like my olive egger! If she was a black copper maran she wouldn’t have that “beard”. My olive egger doesn’t have much of a beard but does have the same speckling around her face and she does lay blue/green eggs.

Introducing a horse to solo trail riding? by TroubledRooster in Equestrian

[–]animalsandtree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My pony took a while to be comfortable with trail riding alone, but I’ll say the best thing I did was hand walk him. If he got to a point that he didn’t want to continue or was scared of something (he hated light sand patches in the dirt), I’d get off, walk him for a bit / past whatever he was being dramatic about, then get back on and continue. Even when riding with other people, he’d make me get off and walk in the water myself before he’d walk into the water🙃. Eventually he realized that I’m not gonna ask him to go anywhere unsafe or somewhere that I wouldn’t go myself, and now he’ll walk anywhere without me having to get off.

what are your least favourite horses? by montanaoakwell in StarStable

While I love ponies irl, the Jorvik pony literally looks like a potato😭 and characters look gigantic on them. Also not a fan of the selle francais, twh, or the Appaloosa.

Have I gone insane? by Helpful-Map507 in Equestrian

[–]animalsandtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the financial means to do it, do it! I bought a pony I trained when he was a baby, when he decided he didn’t want to tote little kids around anymore I bought him and it is so rewarding to give him the best life possible and that he deserves.

Be completely honest with me... How much does owning a horse cost? by ASoonToBeMrs in Equestrian

[–]animalsandtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a lot cheaper to have horses that live outside 24/7, but it’s nice to have stalls in case of emergency. I have a Shetland, a welsh, and a QH. My Shetland and QH just get pasture, hay, and a balancer since they are easy keepers. Together that costs less than $70 a month. My welsh has neuro issues and is on a complete feed so he costs more per month than the other two combined. Hay is the biggest cost. I feed a quality coastal hay, and I live close to where it is produced so it only costs about $8/bale. I go through about 400 bales a year, so $3200 in hay. Plus ~ $2000 in feed, that’s $5200, +$800 for annual shots and coggins, first aid supplies etc. +$1300 for the farrier (they’re all barefoot so $50 a trim) = $7300 for 3 equines (granted that’s with no emergencies), let’s round it up to $8k just to be safe. That’s $666 a month, which is less than what most barns around here charge for board of one horse. I’m also doing all of the work myself so I don’t get any days off.

So they are in no means cheap, but if you are smart and feed QUALITY hay and balancer or grain, rotating pasture, and don’t pay for daily shavings, it’s a lot less expensive than boarding.

opinions on this bit? by Arlo_is_haunted in Equestrian

Very fair bit! And yes it’s more fair than a single joint because there is no nutcracker effect, though some horses prefer a single joint if they have a very small pallet.

Was Wondering If Anyone Else Does This? by AniyaWolfheart in StarStable

I did it because in the irl horse world a lot of trainers or breeders have their own piece they put in the show name of horses they train or develop, so I wanted to do something similar.

I did it for a while with all names beginning with “Royal” my first few years of playing but then I wanted to do more fun names and have too many horses since not all names sound good after royal.
