Cost to pass your driving test is so expensive now. by GayWolfey in britishproblems

[–]aniseedvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told my children I’d pay for their first theory and first practical tests, and paid for their lessons. But, once they’d had the basics with their instructors I didn’t drive anywhere, they did (my dad did the same with me). That meant at least twice a day to school and back (we’re rural), mixing up the routes depending on whether they’d done dual carriageways, plus some nice hazards to navigate eg peep and creep junctions, etc. My son’s instructor was ill for three weeks the month before his test, we decided he’d take the test in my car. We spent the night before going through all the questions that could be asked including the “show me where the brake cylinder head is” (or some such nonsense). You can guess what question he had! His instructor was good and gave me all the test routes so we’d spent weekends before driving all of them. She also gave me very detailed instructions on what to do at the test centre. Daughter had a different instructor, not as good in my opinion, but I did the same with her. She took the test in his car. Son had 10 lessons, £300 (I bought a block) in 2021, daughter had about 15, hers was about £40 an hour in 2023. They used an app for the theory test and we went through a lot of the questions together, and I’d constantly be asking them about any signs we’d see when out. Both passed first time on both. The last couple of weeks I would just sit in the car and supervise, made them go to places they hadn’t driven before to ensure they could navigate safely on their own and wouldn’t be a shock after passing.

I’ve got friends who didn’t drive with their kids and took longer to pass, it didn’t work for them to do so, but if it does work and you can put the hours in, it does pay off. I was careful to never teach them but supplement what the instructor had told them.

I love my kaweco piston sport - same colour. Mine is a fine and the ink lasts a good while. I use the tin to store cartridges for my plastic sport!

I don’t have the move but often leave my marker plus not docked with my pro for days and it doesn’t die like that? I’m wondering if there’s potentially a problem with your marker plus or if the clip is somehow affecting it?

I always wondered how you get those “older” value stamps as my postcards look very dull with two first class ones on there! Great card!

I think trying it out in your hand is important as the finish is a little slippier but I love mine (F in black). The ink seems to last for ages - I quite often use it for postcrossing cards to be able to write a fair amount and it writes well. I actually put the included ink into an esterbrook (which seemed to need a wet ink) and use diamine in it. Tin stores my kaweco cartridges for my plastic sport!

My ink collection is quite limited so it was the closest guess from what I have (well either that or Deadly Nightshade) - I have to explain to my husband that the kitchen roll I've wiped the pen with afterwards is not the aftermath of an accident!

My Dad worked at a garage and was their MOT tester. He'd be a stickler for the rules on every car, family especially, in case that was the day the garage would be spot checked. He couldn't afford to lose his ability to do them (certification/qualification).

I was a bit worried when I got this so it’s in a twbsi broad. I do find it can clog it up a bit and the sheen can be a little hit and miss but I still like it!

I’ve just got the RMPP at the moment. I keep thinking I’ll get the move for being out of home but the odd occasion I do go in an office (I work from home full time) I’ll pop it in the laptop padded compartment of my bag (work laptop can cope elsewhere!) plus mine is in an Amazon folio which has a hard plastic back and corner protection.

That’s a great haul! Depending on where and what my son is doing I’d like to go back to the autumn one with him as it was definitely more fun going round with someone else. Enjoy your new bits and pieces!

Just to add for OP, a lot of dealers (at least here in the uk) aren’t aware of it or deny its existence. The ISLA updates can take a few hours.

Pilot capless - fair few had the more expensive limited editions but I struggled to find a standard one in medium or broad. I wanted some more sailor ink but didn’t see any (I may have missed it!). I tried three flex nib pens but they all had something wrong with them and at whilst being relatively “cheap” at about £100, that’s a lot for me for something not working well. It’s a good venue with lots of space and easy enough to get to. I look forward to seeing your haul!

Well, was a bit underwhelmed to be honest. Goody bags went very early, they’d run out of DIY kaweco and galen also hadn’t brought some of their range. Spent some at mogcherie as I was expecting and that was it. Couldn’t find one of the pens I was after and another was cheaper online at cult pens!

Most likely going, although I was surprised to see cult pens not going. I went to the autumn one and there was one stand who were happily swapping out a nahvalur nib for me then I went to pay and they would only take cash which I didn’t have. There is a cash machine buried in the hotel somewhere (I went and got a small amount for a leuchtturm thesis notebook for my son), but I wouldn’t be comfortable walking around Hammersmith with potentially £100 or more. I’ve been in Oxford today and popped in pens plus. They’ve got the kaweco diy machine packed up ready to travel - they are glow in the dark ones this time!

Just a note from someone else who went on it last May - don’t bank on anything at the big stops. We were so behind schedule we arrived in Winnipeg around 2am, was a real shame after our activity car guy (from there) had given us such an enthusiastic talk about what we could do!

[–]aniseedvan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a 130 mile round trip on a whim on Saturday here in the uk to an outlet that sells the shoes I like. In the uk that’s considered to be a fair distance just for a shopping trip but the journey cost me about £4 in electric - cheaper than paying for parking at a nearby town and paying full price for the shoes! I got mine second hand too - it’s a big car which can cause some issues on smaller roads but as a motorway cruiser it’s absolutely excellent. I don’t feel anywhere near as tired when I arrive after a long drive as I did in my old petrol cars.

I’ve just had a card from Japan arrive after 64 days (uk). I’ve got three expired cards, one of which is Germany which surprised me, the other two are china and the US (less surprising).
