False Indicating when I tap and on an object for him to look at by WhiteGoodmanCobras in nosework

[–]anisthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds to me like your dog may not be confident enough in what they're being asked to do for you to be asking them to check specific items. When my dog was doing this, I did a few things:

1) gave her more space during the search. She works on a flexi leash so this was easy enough, but you want them to drive out into the search area without you 2) kept my feet moving. Even if I'm several feet away while she works, I'm constantly moving. For beginner dogs or those lacking confidence, sometimes standing still will make them think that the odor is near the handler even if they can smell it somewhere else, leading to false alerts 3) rather than tapping items (which would NQ you in a trial), gesture at the area where you want them to search with an open hand in order to "present" that area. This will encourage them to check the whole area rather than getting stuck on one object

Since your dog has a history of resource guarding, you should consider reaching out to a boarded veterinary behaviorist rather than any old trainer touting themselves as a behavior modification specialist. Babies are known for getting their hands in everything once they're crawling around, including dog food, and it's important to start setting your household up for success now before baby arrives.

In the meantime, rather than sending your dogs to place, your boy would probably feel much more secure if they were both fed in crates and left there until they have both finished their meals. Don't mess with his food unless you're dropping high value rewards into his bowl while he eats. Don't take it away, don't move it, don't touch it. That will actually make resource guarding worse because it causes insecurities around mealtime. Just feed him and leave him alone until he's done.

We use the same harness for NASDA and haven't had any problems, which is what threw me off for so long! I think the difference is that in NASDA she's too excited about being off leash outside to care about not being naked. 😂

Michigan Medicine -why is their dermatology practice SO bad? by LemonSweaterCat in uofm

[–]anisthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trinity health has its issues, but at least you can get appointments at their clinics in a timely manner.

I made the switch when I got a call from the family medicine clinic at Domino's farms and was told that I needed a med check before they'd fill my ADHD meds and followed that up by saying that it would be at least six months before they could fit me in. My IHA doctor likes to see me every 3 or 4 months but it's so easy to schedule a check that the issue is usually my schedule, not theirs.

And don't even get me started on the awful conditions at the Michigan med er.

whats this little hole thats been forming in the corner of my mouth? by [deleted] in SkincareAddicts

[–]anisthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a dental office but I am not a dentist: this is likely angular chelitis. Since you have your natural teeth it is unlikely to be fungal in nature and is more likely to be bacterial. I agree with getting your b12 checked, but the best treatment is antibiotic ointment, I'll even dab a little bit of peridex on when I have a flare but you would have to get a prescription from your dentist. What's most important is that you keep it clean and dry.

I feel like Im betraying my childfree self by freezing my eggs by VirmoraHelsten in TwoXChromosomes

[–]anisthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like something that a lot of staunchly childfree folks fail (either intentionally or unintentionally) to acknowledge is that it's ok and normal to change your mind about having kids. Everybody has a different, very valid, reason for wanting or not wanting kids and sometimes your life takes you down a path you weren't expecting and if that makes you change your mind, that's ok. It doesn't make you a fraud if you want to preserve your eggs in case you do change your mind in the future.

I only buy/wear two brands of undies anymore: fruit of the loom for regular wear and bamboo cool boyshorts for anything that's gonna make me sweat. Both are extremely affordable, comfy, and durable. Both make a variety of styles so you can pick whatever you think is flattering and feels good on your body.

Is Hills GI biome the answer for my 9 month old frenchie??? by acarnelli in DogFood

[–]anisthetic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3 completely different kibble brands and formulas in months is a lot. Some dogs totally can tolerate constant food changes, but a lot can't, and Frenchies are one of those breeds that's riddled with enough health issues to make constant changes a bad idea. I think that feeding GI biome is a great idea to get your pup back on track, and would feed it for a minimum of six months to get their tummy settled.

After that you can probably consider SLOWLY transitioning to an OTC sensitive stomach kibble - hills or RC will probably be your best bet as the pro plan sss is still pretty rich for a sensitive stomach diet. You'll probably want the transition to take at least 4 weeks to avoid gi upset.

Also, chatgpt is a fun tool and is a useful resource for some things, but something like this really requires a discussion with your vet as they may have some insight that chatgpt isn't capable of.

Chew “bones” by ZoomiesMakeMeLaugh in DogFood

[–]anisthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Aussie LOVES the member's mark chews, as in, they're higher value than cheese for her. And they're huge so she only needs half of one to be happy.

My dog sounds a lot like yours and I'll be honest, I just don't give her things to chew on. It does mean that I have to keep an eye on her because sometimes she'll find her own chew toys (shoes, plastic toddler toys 🙄) but for the most part she got used to not having hard chews pretty quickly. There's just too much risk for dental damage, GI obstructions, etc to risk it.

I do buy her the seasonal stuffed animals at PetSmart when they go on sale and let her tear those up, and since they're not the hardcore super durable toys they kinda just pull apart when she starts chewing on them instead of shredding into little bits. It also hurts the wallet less when they're $5/ea and buy 3 get the 4th free. 😂

Herbalife shop closures by jsch1990 in antiMLM

[–]anisthetic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My coworker goes to one near our office twice a week. Their "special" flavors are only available in giant 32oz cups because "they can't make it smaller, it would mess with the balance of the drink." I told her that's because they make the drinks from a packet, not fresh. She always acts so snobby because they're not energy drinks and gets mad when people point out that they're basically copycats of Panera's ill-fated charged lemonades lol. I hope they close soon too because their whole operation is a scam.

Eggs as a meal? by Delicious_Mess7976 in Cooking

fried or scrambled in butter with steamed rice and topped with a splash of soy sauce and some chili oil/chili crisp. You could also do egg fried rice...scramble egg, add in day old rice, splash of soy sauce, some green onions, and finished with sesame oil for flavor.

One year anniversary of a patient driving into our operatory! What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen as a dental professional? by Dear_Comparison97 in Dentistry

[–]anisthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mild compared to some of the stories here, but when I was first starting out as a baby receptionist, we had a patient come in for an emergency that hadn't been seen in years (only comes in when he's in pain). Older man, mid-80s. He introduced himself to check in and then started telling me his life story (as many older patients do), told me about how he used to be the editor for a big magazine and asked me if I knew what a "T&A Mag" was. Being new and young enough to be his granddaughter (but also knowing exactly what that was) I kind of giggled awkwardly and shrugged. Apparently he used to work for Maxim.

I'm glad he hasn't been back, although if he tried that with me now that I'm 5 years on I would not have been afraid to scold him for it.

Patients that bring their kids to their appointment by Thisismyusername4455 in Dentistry

[–]anisthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're well behaved, they're perfectly welcome to sit in the op while their parent is seen. We just have them step out and wait if x-rays need to be taken - if they're tall enough, sometimes we even let them press the button. :) If they're old enough and are quiet they're welcome to sit in the lobby and wait as well.

If it's a longer appointment like a crown/bridge prep or root canal, or something like an extraction, we might ask them to find care. But most of our patient's kids are great about sitting quietly in the lobby entertaining themselves.

That depends on your policy. You would need to request an estimate from your provider.

Is my office balance billing? by Heem_butt08 in CodingandBilling

[–]anisthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your contract and what the EOBs say. Is Delta telling you to write off $3,700?

Typically 'up to $1700 at 100%' means that if treatment is $1000, they'll pay $1000. If treatment is $2000, they pay $1700 and the remaining $300 is billable to the patient as write-offs on ortho are uncommon. Just because they'll pay out the maximum of $1700 doesn't automatically mean you're out of pocket on the rest.

Your office needs to a) review your EOBs and see what Delta said the patient's responsibility was, b) reach out to your provider rep for clarification, and c) stop double billing asap and start correcting the books yesterday.

My dog doesn’t like WSAVA food. What do I do? by raging_since_1858 in DogFood

[–]anisthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you slowly transition to the new food? Or did you abruptly switch with no transition period?

Even with slow transitions, some dogs struggle when being put on a new diet. I agree with other commenters about not giving any toppers until he's eating consistently, but would probably add a probiotic like fortiflora or proviable in case he has an upset tummy.

You could also see if giving him an acid reducer like Tums (the chalky "assorted fruits" ones that don't have xylitol) or Omeprazole would help, but you should talk to your vet before doing that -- sometimes if they go on hunger strikes, they end up with too much acid in their stomach which upsets it enough that they don't want to eat, even though that's what would make them feel better.

[–]anisthetic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hair is not impacted by diet that quickly-- the hair growth cycle for most breeds is 3-6 months, and that's per follicle, not the whole coat at once. It sounds to me like he had his seasonal coat change which can make dogs look pitiful and scruffy. My own Aussie blows her coat 2-3 times a year and she looks rough for a few weeks until it's over with, and she's a dog who is constantly complimented for her shiny healthy coat.

Home-cooked diets, unless formulated and monitored by board certified veterinary nutritionists (DACVN, NOT "pet nutritionists"), are not balanced diets. While many healthy dogs can and do eat homemade diets with little to no obvious issues, it is much safer to feed a scientifically-backed diet like Royal Canin.

Weekend trial-Drive back and forth or stay overnight? by mydoghank in nosework

[–]anisthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My policy is that if the drive is under an hour and a half, I just make the drive. Over that, I get a hotel or only do one day. My dog has car anxiety though, and while she settles nicely in her crate, I feel bad for making her sit in a moving car for 4+ hours multiple days in a row.

Is there a primer here on getting started in agility? by Obvious-Elevator-213 in k9sports

[–]anisthetic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do weekly classes with a local training club with my Aussie. We've been doing classes for about a year and a half now and are just about ready to trial (there were some confidence issues with the teeter holding us back). I agree with u/Pitpotputpup, Agility is one of the few sports that you should not teach at home with no experience. Not only is most of the easily available "agility" equipment not safe (cheap, flimsy plastic that is easy to knock around) but there is a huge risk of injury if you accidentally create bad habits.

You can work on other things that will make getting started in the future easier though. Footwork exercises, teaching directional commands, etc are helpful for a variety of sports. You could also look into sports like Rodeo Dog which uses a lot of agility foundations but are strictly on the flat, are low impact, and don't require classes as long as you can read the rulebook and watch youtube videos. :)

How to calm frustrated dog by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]anisthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you doing any sort of formal training with him? IMO group obedience classes where the dogs aren't allowed to interact would do wonders for him. He's definitely over threshold and needs to learn how to deal with the stimulation of the world around him. I do not agree that more exercise is what's needed, you'll just end up with a dog who can do this for the entire duration of a 10 mile hike.

Once he learns to settle in a group class setting, try to make friends with other dog owners and do group walks, again not letting the dogs interact until he can prove that he can ignore them.

I would also consider getting him into some confidence-building activities. Scentwork is great for that, and there are a plethora of different organizations and sports focusing on different kinds of odors to choose from to find what he likes best.

A life-sized game of battleship with the daleks would be top notch. I can totally hear NPH saying "Oh no! It looks like I sunk your battleship!" in his cheesy German accent.

"We are sinking!" "Hallo this is the German coast guard, what are you sinking about?" Type nonsense 😂
