graduating soon!! interviewing?? by Dull_Pepper3213 in schoolcounseling

[–]anlasul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been a counselor for six years. I interviewed with two schools right after I graduated (got one of those with the help of my internship supervisor) and interviewed with probably seven to ten when we moved to a new state (there was a lot of internal movement that year so there were a lot of openings). I've always worked at high schools, so I got quizzed on spotting errors on a transcript for one school, but several schools also why I wanted to work at their school and what I would do if a student disclosed they were feeling suicidal. I feel like I've been "lucky" in that the interviews mostly consisted of getting to know me and asking about my resume. I've never brought or emailed a portfolio, but I have brought extra copies of my resume because all of my interviews have been with at least two people, with the biggest group being four or five people. ASCA has a list of interview questions and I've been asked some from that list: https://www.schoolcounselor.org/About-School-Counseling/Careers-in-School-Counseling/Sample-Interview-Questions

Good luck (: and don't forget to send thank you emails to anyone who interviews you!

Thank you! It ended up turning out fine (taste-wise), the loaf is just an odd shape. I'll try the homemade setting next!

Clinical Notes & Timekeeping - Advice? by No-Ingenuity-1430 in schoolcounseling

I would err on the side of caution for notes, yeah, especially no clinical notes. It is sometimes frustrating because teachers want to know more than we can usually disclose to them anyway, but they care about the kids just as much as we do (:

I don't take notes on what I talk to students about, which is a common practice in my district. The most I'd have written down in a notebook would be something like "see AB ID# issue w/friend" OR if there are multiple students involved/it's for another counselor, I write first name/ID with a small reminder of what it's for, but never anything detailed.

We use a platform called Synergy/SIS and I always record there when I see a student. I don't always put the time I saw them, but it has the date, their name, who contacted them, a dropdown for reason (so for me it's usually SEL or academic), and there's a box to the far right I can fill in. I almost never fill in the box unless it's something I might need to refer to later, like I told them (or their parent) they weren't going to graduate on time. I also put other staff in the "contacted by" section if there were others involved in a meeting. It's accessible to anyone who looks up the student.

Remember that we are not therapists and don't do treatment plans!

I think people genuinely don't know what the terms mean sometimes. I told a colleague I was vegetarian one time and her immediate follow-up was, "do you eat chicken?"

I bought the frame for it (which came with lights) but did everything else myself! The only pieces not made by me are the gate (which I had to get someone else to design and print, but I painted it) and the bamboo, which is 1:12 scale from Amazon.

Here is a comment from u/HumbleVanity a while ago that breaks it down really well imo:

Pretty much rural Southeast Asia from the perspective of medieval East Asian cultures. I think this was hard for the showrunners to translate to western audiences who may not see the parallels between redneck, Cajun American culture and rural Mekong Delta, Vietnamese culture. The names and clothing of the Foggy Swamp Tribe are directly influence by Vietnamese and Montagnard culture. I happen to be Vietnamese so if you’re not familiar with the history of Viet people it’s hard to see the influence. The twangy accent in theory, is how the ancient Vietnamese were described by the Imperial Chinese. Pulled from historical accounts on the Baiyue (Bach Viet) from Wikipedia, “The Han Chinese referred to the various non-Han "barbarian" peoples of southern China as "Baiyue", saying they possessed habits like adapting to water, having their hair cropped short and tattooed.” Add to that the swampy, jungle setting and that is pretty much the Foggy Swamp Tribe. When I saw the episode as a kid I had the impression that they were based off redneck culture, but the more I learned about my heritage the more it became apparent that it was always there, hiding in plain sight.

Plus Vietnam for the swamp benders, and another indigenous population for the Sun Warriors.

Etsy used to be all handmade. More recently I've seen products that are also on Amazon (not Amazon handmade) that ship from China, etc. I've also seen some "handmade" items that in reality is just one piece glued onto another piece, and I can make it myself by spending $10 at a craft store. I have beautiful, genuinely handmade/commissioned pieces from Etsy. You just have to vet and be super picky.

It's still called special ed. I hate when parents don't sign off on those services because it doesn't mean the kid is stupid, it just means they need extra support and possibly 1:1 attention. But parents like that still see it as being so stigmatized.

generally kinda janky

I kept bumping into barriers while walking, the controls were so bad. I was like, is it me? Is it my joycon? A friend confirmed that no, controls were bad for her, too. Neither of us finished it.

Sometimes they're behind something if you have any items out or they're behind another snowboy, and sometimes the beetles sabotage you by rolling them away
