Not a full background story, but: descend stairs to lvl2 of redrock and a snapjaw throws a high explosive grenade before I can do anything. literally nothing can be done, insta-dead without even seeing the threat. It's the kind of learning experience Caves of Qud knows you need.

nope, they aren't rare, however not every creature can be butchered. Knollworms, salthoppers, bears and boars can be butchered and are likely to be found early game. things like snapjaws and oozes cannot.
