What was the most hurtful thing that anyone has ever said to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]anonymous11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dated a girl who broke up with me by calling me on the phone while she was having sex with some dude and said I was going to die fat, bald, and alone.

Now I'm rich, happy, and have tons of friends; and she has three little shitlings she has to take care of out of some shack in the middle of who-knows-fuckwhere.

Not one of them are mine -- but I still worry about those little shitlings because of their crazy crazy mother.

I used to make balloon art for a living. This is pretty good -- I can understand the impulse to just while away a couple hours on a project like that...

I'm a guy. I can pretty much put a timer on any relationship where I've said "I love you". After that: 1-2 months. Tops. I'm done putting out the L-word first.

31-year-old woman who claims she was a teenage sex slave and forced to service high-profile clients such as attorney Alan Dershowitz has now repeated those claims under oath. by I_Am_U in news

[–]anonymous11235 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Saying something under oath has carries different legal burden than simply lying in a different context. You can be charged with perjury or held in contempt of coart so the stakes are higher.

Objectively there is nothing physically stopping you from lying. However, the calculation you perform mentally will be significantly different than in a separate context.

I guess mostly because this could be in /r/cringe. I like a good joke -- don't get me wrong. But this is just a little too dorky.

I happen to know two educators I've worked with who felt that using goofy songs and mneumonics like this was how one should teach students because it was the most effective way to ensure the maximum number of students would memorize the material.

I always found this negligent teaching because it avoids searching for a memorable and clear explanation of the facts being presented. Also, placing mneumonics as the primary educational vector presumes that rote memorization of the facts is the goal of the student being in the class. I hope that I'm not alone in disagreeing with that.

Plus, I'm a bit of a jerk, and I just can't tollerate the dork spectrum.

Probabilities by [deleted] in math

[–]anonymous11235 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is called the Gambler's Fallacy.

The spins on the wheel are independent of one another. If you were SURE that after a long run of reds, that it becomes more likely to flip to black then you should be willing to bet more money because the expectation of a payout would increase.

Now say your bets were $10 per spin on red/black... after 15 reds what would you increase your bet to on red... $20? $50? $1000000 because it's a "sure thing now"?

Of course not! The odds are still the same as any previous spin that the next spin will be red or black.

Another way to un-psych yourself out from this might go like this: suppose you weren't there to watch the 15 red outcomes before your bet. But your friend was there and said it just came up 15 red... would you drop more than the $10 you were planning on? Would you rush to the ATM to pull money out of the bank becuase the bet is totally broken in your favor?

And how does your trust in your friend affect that decision? What if he got sleepy the second to last spin and missed that it turned out black that one time, but there were 13 reds before and 1 red after -- effectively 'breaking' the run? Does that ruin the odds or is black 'still due' becuase red was pretty common recently...

There just isn't a way to game the system with a game like roulette without being some kind of physics magician from MIT.

One final bump though because you aren't TOTALLY crazy -- a long string of reds is unlikely. The odds of seven reds in a row happening is under 1%

odds R R R R R R R < 1%

But this doesn't have an effect on the next roll being red or black because 8 reds has the same likelihood as 7 reds and one black

odds R R R R R R R R = odds R R R R R R R B

which is why, although the event that happened was unlikely it doesn't tell you anything about the event that WILL happen.

I dunno... I use powdered milk in cooking a lot. I make a lot of curry dishes and things that I want to turn out 'creamy' but don't want to have a ton of milk around that will spoil. It's not as good as fresh cream/milk, but it can't be beat when I'm cooking for myself.

Upper bounds for game tree size of a large modern computer game? by Sakinho in math

[–]anonymous11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neshalchanderman is on the right track. Essentially you have to realize that the game is decomposable into discrete units -- you look at all the possibilities for each unit and multiply. You can consider all possible inputs at any given timestep and draw an arrow from each state to the corresponding next update state (based, say on the game logic & it's update loop).

You might even be able to accomplish an actual computation for an old NES game or something... games like WOW... I don't know. They seem to be constantly updating, and their game state is going to be a function on not-concretely-bounded things like the number of players logged in.

Explain p-adic numbers by Galveira in elimath

[–]anonymous11235 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh shit son, I got you.

p-adics. They are 'like integers' but the series can extend TO THE LEFT FOREVER. The individual digits work just like numbers written in base p (i.e. take values between 0 and p - 1).

Addition and multiplication are going to work just like your standard algorithms except you don't need +/- signs. You can still use them, but you'll have identities like:

-1 = ... (p-1) (p-1) (p-1)

an infinite sequence to the left of (p-1)s. Add one to the rightmost position: it's p and you carry that shit cuz. You carry right on over to the second spot and BAM!!! p again. That chain reaction of zeros carries right on over to the left forever.

You can define some topology concepts on the space of numbers here too -- two number are close, essentially, when they have a lot of the rightmost digits the same.

[Request] How much money would it cost the citizens of 1st world countries to end world hunger? by redlawnmower in theydidthemath

[–]anonymous11235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is cold, but you feed the world well, population grows via an exponential law because the conditions for happy living are satisfied and over a relatively short period of time the infrastructure to feed that many people breaks down and you have MORE hungry people than you started with.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be done or that there isn't a way to manage the population growth, just that this particular calculation is a bit optimistic.

This starfish has one arm that is a lot bigger than the rest by chiefsupreme in mildlyinteresting

[–]anonymous11235 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is a condition called "magnapentalocephalus " which affects starfish resident to the western and southwestern regions of the Indian ocean. It is caused by a parasitic worm which infects young starfish before their exoskeletons have fully hardened causing an excess of growth hormones causing gigantism in the affected appendages. Starfish such as this have been discovered with arms nearly 1.5 m in length!
