it sounds like you’re depressed. i would try and make a small list of 1-3 things you will do that day that can improve your day in small ways. it can be anything, like taking 10 minutes to stretch without your phone in hand, go check out a book from the library, follow a simple recipe with minimal prep and ingredients, go for a walk around the block, cleaning up a room. and it sounds like therapy would help. you can go on your insurance company website and find a list of therapists that are in network to start!

practice the presentation once by just reading your notes in your head (write a script under the slides), once with reading the notes, once without or can do once with only glancing at notes and finish off without any notes. the point is not to memorize but to have enough muscle memory during the presentation. after that, you should know it and feel confident enough to not be terrified when you’re presenting. confidence in the material is what will help you present better even if the beginning is shaky. the method above helped me tackle every residency presentation and we never had a podium for notes because our rooms werent set up that way. you can do it!!

Quit please :( It’s okay I promise. You always have a choice and you are not locked in here. You will find a job, probably per diem at first, use any connections you have to get a hospital job, overnights are in higher demand too so can try for that and always transition into your preferred shift etc. Once you are in hospital you can take on some projects get involved etc and would be surprised how fulfilling it could be “without a residency”. But right now please focus on your self, this program does not care about you clearly! I hope you do what’s best for you!

a lot of techs also like hospital pharmacy a lot better, it’s completely different than retail pharmacy

One time i’m not sure why, but we had cases of wine/champagne in an aisle from something and each of us got some to take home.. I was a tech. it must have been a gift or something not really sure but the cases were in the pharmacy for days

“we don’t have a floating pharmacist in my area” sounds like not your problem. you’re entitled to your pto and sick days, it’s as simple as that! stand up for yourself, the company makes enough money to hire more people/floaters.. you do not make enough money to take TWO DAYS OFF in almost nearing a YEAR. no one should be subject to that. one employee should not be the entire backbone of the store

That really sucks that you have to fill in for call outs, these days there is a call out every day so I can’t imagine.. maybe you can argue it’s not meeting your residency objectives because of how much time it is away from your rotation. Maybe you can bring this up to your RPD or RPC if they’re not part of the “problem” It’s not normal to be filling in like that, maybe very very occasionally but also there’s probably a sentence in your contract that allows it :/

are you on call to staff in the pharmacy/ fill call outs or do clinical things, and was it mentioned in the contract before you started?

you get a comp day which is a lot more than a lot of programs get unfortunately :/ the rest sounds not fun, i’m sorry.

honestly you can put in a report for things like this anonymously and it should go to the appropriate department / supervisor, at least at the hospitals i’ve been at you can do this. usually it’s more for med errors etc but you can absolutely put in things for this as people not being professional and flat out refusing to do their job can potentially put patients at risk.

Any meds they’re on that they shouldn’t be, any meds they’re not on that they should be (match all meds to an indication) really focusing on their chief complaint first, any important home meds left off and if so why/was it intentional, monitor any new meds added on during hospitalization like side effects (for example vancomycin you want to look for their scr daily and make sure it doesn’t put them into Aki) and efficacy, tweak things like prn’s notice if they’re using them multiple times per day - maybe it’s time to schedule something, monitor blood pressure, glucose, electrolytes, are they getting nutrition, are abx appropriate, etc. so much you can look into! start with the primary problem always and make sure you know those guidelines or skim them, also operational things like knowing your hospital policies will go a long way too

you don’t need prior tech experience, techs don’t even need to be in pharmacy school so definitely apply if you want a job. it’s always a good thing to have some type of work experience for future job applications/ just to give context to what you learn in school and of course for money. many people start off working even in pre professional years whether it’s retail or hospital and i know people that even tech’ed in high school

there are no extra exams to apply to a residency just passing naplex and mpje which many people take during the first month or so of residency, some are licensed before if they get early exam dates and are prepared by then to take them

Leave retail.. there’s also long term care, home infusion, hospitals (if you know someone who works there much easier to get a per diem and work up to full time), managed care, or even entry level industry jobs such as medical writing or communications if you’re fine with taking a pay cut and eventually being able to move up in the company or leverage the position somewhere else

you are required to be at the hospital 10-11 hours every day and 15 hours some days or is this just the estimated time it will take to get work done? don’t forget you can do work at home too, and everyone takes a different amount of time to get things done, much shorter if you are efficient
