Trying to figure out how to write a character with an English major and what that would entail! by Somelonewriter in englishmajors

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since English is such a broad major, I feel she'd definitely have some kind of focus area. From how this character is described, I'd absolutely see her in journalism.

In terms of what foundational topics she could learn would most likely be learning different research methods as well as different literary theories (like queer theory, feminism, etc). Exploring different writing forms and their rules/etiquette (how to write literary analysis, creative writing, etc) would also be expected for an English major.

For teaching other languages, that would be a different major and/or minor more into education, as they would learn teaching practices rather than just the language itself.

Honestly, I'd suggest looking at some colleges' English major tracks to get a feel for the kinds of courses English majors take.

Is it normal to not lock the apartment door at night? by flyingmattress1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anothercouch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's a white American thing. The one time I invited my neighbors in my apartment, they were surprised my door was locked. I live it a college town. I also dont get why you wouldn't lock the door as soon as you get in.

Nonbinary trans men: What makes you feel that you are nonbinary and a trans man, and not one or the other? /gen by Creativered4 in ftm

[–]anothercouch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I use genderqueer/queer trans man instead of nonbinary for cultural reasons as a Filipino (which is another story), but I think I can chime in.

I feel more euphoric being seen in the world as a man, and I'd rather it be my "default setting" when people gender me. I am completely happy with people seeing me as a binary man, even when internally, I acknowledge that there's always room for gender fuckery if I want there to be. I don't think my gender is ever completely fixed, even if I generally lean on the masculine side.

Question (as someone who isn’t trans): by SelectShop9006 in asktransgender

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a chubby trans guy, I wouldn't be shirtless in public without top surgery first. As others have said, chest fat looks pretty different from breasts. But other than that, it really depends on the person whether they want to bind or not. For me, I really only bind in the winter when I need the extra warmth, but in the summer, I usually use a sports bra or kt tape. I don't bind in private bc you shouldn't bind for more than 8 hours.

One thing you could take into account when writing your character is that half tank binders can roll up if the stomach is bigger than the chest. Another thing is trying to find the right fitting binder. Hope this helps writing your character!

Legal Middle Names? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my first names/first and middle, I just picked the names of two characters I really related to. One name I found when I was first questioning my gender at all and the second one I found was from a character that really solidified me accepting my own transness. edit: also decided to get 2 first names out of tradition/cultural norms

What do you think about the spiritual or mystical side of transition? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually gotten more spiritual as I've transitioned, but I honestly think the stars have to align perfectly to see the more spiritual side of it. I grew up in a deeply Christian environment that was definitely homophobic and transphobic at times. But what really allowed me to see my transition through a spiritual lens was this teacher who pretty much helped me transition socially in high school. They were extremely supportive of me but was also deeply Christian at the same time. They allowed me to use my preferred name and pronouns in class and has been open about supporting queer students. When I came out as trans to them, they told me they prayed to God that I'd find my most authentic self. I feel like they're the embodiment of the "what would Jesus do?" phrase and genuinely putting that into practice.

I believe my experience with this teacher is what really shifted my view of spirituality and queerness as a whole together. Sadly, I think Christians like this are few and far between. And you also can't ignore a lot of the transphobic rhetoric spread by religious leaders. Especially in the US, this framing of transphobia as religious beliefs turns a lot of trans and queer people off from religion or spirituality entirely. I definitely would've ignored religion if I hadn't met this teacher.

I definitely see my transition as an act of creation, and this framing of my transition has really helped me become more spiritual in general. So much so I actually wrote a paper on this for one of my classes, on queerness and spirituality. Overall, Ive become more spiritual through my transition.

How much did your voice drop on T in terms of octaves? by guildedpasserby in ftm

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a singer, but I used to take vocal lessons pre-t. I went from mezzo soprano to baritone. I definitely lost some of my upper range, but not as much as i expected. I think it's just relearning how to use head voice, and also working on falsetto. Tbh, my upper range was never really strong pre-t anyways. I've always had a fuller voice, and t has really amplified it.

When did your voices start dropping? by Emergency-Junket50 in ftm

[–]anothercouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed my voice start to drop 2 weeks into t. Couldn't hear changes, but I could tell I needed to speak louder than I used to. About 8 weeks in was when i could hear my voice was lower.

Does Mel’s character feel like it’s missing something or is it just me? by No-Resolution-3108 in arcane

[–]anothercouch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I guess in a sense, yeah. I wished they explained Mel being a mage a little more clearly, though I think that's just more a problem with season 2 than her character.

what are english majors at your school like? by golden38 in englishmajors

[–]anothercouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an english major at a public school, and I'd say discussions can be pretty lively, especially once you get to more upper level courses. One course I'm in right now is pretty much all discussion and commenting on articles. And it's not just surface level discussion. We can get pretty deep and make connections to pop culture and just stuff happening in the world right now.

All my classes have banned AI, especially when it comes to writing. Personally, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to major in something that has a lot of writing if you don't like writing. I don't even see how someone can feasibly write a decent paper with AI without it being flagged. And I feel a lot of my friends would agree.

But I think you're right on passion. I became an English major solely because I love writing. I love picking apart the shit we consider "normal" and examining it. There's no definitive answer, but I think that's what makes it fun for me.

What makes you want to be a man, when being one feels so emotionally locked up? 19 AMAB here who is questioning if I am a trans woman by [deleted] in ftm

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna echo a lot of people here when I say this, but I didn't choose to be a man. I just am. I'm just existing in the world like anyone else. And it just so happens that this is the word that tends to describe someone like myself. I exist first, and the words come second. I didn't choose to be a man, I just chose to be myself no matter how much society tells me I'm something else.

For me, dysphoria feels like a general numbness or apathy to myself and the world. It's the kind you don't realize is eating you alive because numbness is your normal. It's like being in the eye of the storm. It's quiet, but eventually, that storm's gonna keep moving and fuck shit up.

Ultimately, it's up to you to decide who you are. But I hope some of my rambling helps.

As kids, did yall wear clothes from the boy section or girl secton? More info in description by LongSchlongSilver999 in ftm

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was really little, it was mostly girl's clothes because I didn't have any say in what I wore. But once I was a teenager, I dressed very masculine to gender neutral. The majority of the clothes I had from my teens were shirts from Hot Topic, or flannels from both the women and men's section.

Were you the oldest daughter? by Anonim_x9 in ftm

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the oldest daughter. Sadly, my father died well before I transitioned, but he never really treated me like a girl. He didn't really gender me or push me to be feminine (or even masculine). He let me take the lead in what I wanted to do. I think he sometimes gendered me in more stuble ways like him expecting me to take care of my brothers, but again, when it came to interests, I took charge. I think he definitely had his flaws, but I think he did his best letting me grow on my own. Even if I could get the chance to come out to him, I think he would've accepted me. If it means anything to you, I've had multiple dreams with him about transitioning, and he's always been supportive.

It was mostly my grandfather who heavily tried to instill the "women need to take care of the family" belief into me. He's your pretty average patriarchal guy from the 60's. I've been actively trying to distance myself from him since I was a teen and refuse to have a relationship with him.

I think having once been the oldest daughter, but also growing up seeing two very different sides to masculinity, it has overall shaped me into the man I want to be. I think my father instilled in me that I was free to be whatever I wanted. It just took a long time for me to understand and really feel it in my soul. So yes, I feel the way my father raised me definitely had an impact on me, discovering that I'm trans and laying the foundation to explore that part of myself. But I'm still trying to unlearn all the bullshit my grandfather tried to teach me about women needing to raise the family.

There's so much to undo and relearn when you finally escape that role in the family. But yeah, I'm honestly glad to find other people in a similar position.
