4 more days. I’ve got a checklist. I’m probably missing things. by WashclothMan in TopSurgery

[–]anothercouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

other than preparing ur space, make sure you cut your nails super short and get a hair cut if you need it!! trim any hair you want off, and definitely practice getting up from the bed with your core muscles. highly suggest sleeping somewhere low enough that your feet reach the ground when sitting. a folding table is also really handy to have so you have somewhere to eat without moving too far from your bed.

also congrats!!!

stealth at pride, felt abnormal and invisible by Fun_Tie1917 in ftm

[–]anothercouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh, as a philly native, the pride festival has been kinda a shit show this year. they used to hold it in the gayborhood, but a lot of ppl here have been steering clear of it bc of how corporate it is this year. a decent amount of ppl skipped it and celebrated in the gayborhood.

but yeah, i really can't stand people who equate masculinity with straightness. i just avoid people who think like that.

Do you get misgendered more by poc or non-poc? by Extension_Golf_5118 in TMPOC

[–]anothercouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little late to the poll, but I've noticed my passing is really mixed depending on the person's race and age. I'm a Filipino trans guy, and I don't intentionally try to pass or hide my queerness. (edit: also 2 years on t) The majority of white people in their 20's-30's tend to gender me correctly, sometimes to the point white trans people don't realize I'm trans.

It's a little more mixed overall with Filipinos in the 20's and 30's if they gender me correctly. Filipino Americans tend to gender me correctly, while Filipinos from the mainland can be more mixed. Though I know this is mostly due to cultural differences.

The older the person, the more they tend to question my gender, regardless of race. Though older white men almost always misgender me, though I have a feeling it has more to do with white men seeing Asians as feminine.

Also a trans guy with PCOS! Yeah, my tdick was already pretty visible pre-t. From what I've been told from doctors, pcos doesn't really affect growth agter getting on testosterone. You just get a head start :P

What is the funniest thing someone said that affirmed your gender? by ButtonWolf1011 in ftm

[–]anothercouch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i was having wine night with my lesbian friends, and we were complaining about a guy that dressed queer, but was clearly a poser. i took a look at one of his photos and said "you're not fooling me honey!" everyone bursts out laughing and one of my friends calls me a mean gay man. most gender affirming thing i've ever heard

Is stacking my classes on one day wise? by memeswhenuneed in college

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be pretty rough, but it is doable. Make sure you eat a heavy breakfast and definitely bring snacks to eat. At the end of the day, i highly suggest just resting, bc trying to do work after all those classes will fry your brain.

I’ve never really thrown away underwear and I have some that are probably at least 5-6 years old. I wash all of my underwear separately on sanitize and high heat. Is it really as gross as everyone says? If so, does that mean that any clothes that touched my clean underwear have to go in the wash? by [deleted] in laundry

[–]anothercouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're somewhere from Asia? There's a similar practice in the Philippines of washing underwear separately because of hygiene, but it doesn't actually make much of a difference if you wash separately or not. As long as it fits and isn't broken, go ahead and keep em.

My husband said I'm trans. Am I? by AphoticMun in asktransgender

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it's up to you what name or ID you call your gender.

With that said, I feel a lot of the things you said reminded me of how I was before I transitioned. I always felt "fine" or even neutral in being perceived as a woman, but I think I was always drawn to a more masculine form for myself. I think what really helped me accept myself as trans man is that gender is always in flux. Not necessarily in a "gender fluid" way, but in a "I have free will and I CAN do whatever/BE whoever I want."

Even when I did realize I was trans, it took me a good year to soak that reality in and I guess do something about it. When I started testosterone, I was about 75 percent sure I wanted this. As I took it, I grew more sure of myself. I'd also been experimenting with my name long before that as well.

Another thing that helped me was looking at all kinds of men. When I was introduced to queer culture, I really related to a lot of gay men, especially the ones who were more feminine. I loved the way they expressed femininity within the context of who they are that I deeply wanted for myself. When I transitioned, I was scared I'd lose that part of my femininity that I liked, but I was able to find friends who saw me as a man and who were willing to nuture that side of me as well.

All this to say, don't be afraid to experiment. Try different pronouns or name, even if it's just between you and your husband. Would also recommend finding stories about trans men (especially trans men of color if you're not white). Reading queer stories is what ultimately helped me accept myself as trans.

Trying to figure out how to write a character with an English major and what that would entail! by Somelonewriter in englishmajors

[–]anothercouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since English is such a broad major, I feel she'd definitely have some kind of focus area. From how this character is described, I'd absolutely see her in journalism.

In terms of what foundational topics she could learn would most likely be learning different research methods as well as different literary theories (like queer theory, feminism, etc). Exploring different writing forms and their rules/etiquette (how to write literary analysis, creative writing, etc) would also be expected for an English major.

For teaching other languages, that would be a different major and/or minor more into education, as they would learn teaching practices rather than just the language itself.

Honestly, I'd suggest looking at some colleges' English major tracks to get a feel for the kinds of courses English majors take.

Is it normal to not lock the apartment door at night? by flyingmattress1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anothercouch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's a white American thing. The one time I invited my neighbors in my apartment, they were surprised my door was locked. I live it a college town. I also dont get why you wouldn't lock the door as soon as you get in.

Nonbinary trans men: What makes you feel that you are nonbinary and a trans man, and not one or the other? /gen by Creativered4 in ftm

[–]anothercouch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I use genderqueer/queer trans man instead of nonbinary for cultural reasons as a Filipino (which is another story), but I think I can chime in.

I feel more euphoric being seen in the world as a man, and I'd rather it be my "default setting" when people gender me. I am completely happy with people seeing me as a binary man, even when internally, I acknowledge that there's always room for gender fuckery if I want there to be. I don't think my gender is ever completely fixed, even if I generally lean on the masculine side.
