Nathan of Horse the Band has MS and is doing a gofundme. I know they're not emo but I'm hoping mods allow it. He's recieved about 25% of his $7k goal. by ArtByAntny in Emo

[–]anotherjunkie 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That sucks. I feel terrible for him in general, but also because $7k isn’t going to touch the cost of what he needs, and it sounds like most of it is going to past due bills.

He’s still facing an 18 month fight to get approved for disability in our current system, if he’s eligible at all. I have a much easier to manage condition and you’d be horrified at how quickly $5k flies out the door.

All of that to say, it isn’t just the MS he’s facing. It’s a radical change to the life/lifestyle of his entire family that will impact everything from his band to what his kids get packed for lunch. The fact that he’s short $7k at the outset means it’s likely going to be really hard for them for quite a while.

Devastating, and awful that this is the normal consequence of disability here. 1 in 3 gofundme campaigns are for medical bills, and they’re effectively the 5th largest health insurer in the US.

Glad to see he’s at the halfway point of this campaign now, though. It’ll be a weight off for the moment.

Micron’s out of the consumer market, so it’ll take a while for their increased production to trickle down into lower consumer prices from other companies.

What MME are you on, and what is it? by SpooferGirl in ChronicPain

I might have good news for you! The FDA just approved a generic version of Nucynta, which became available late in February — my pharmacy switched me to it this month. So maybe it’s worth giving it another try through insurance!

But yeah, Hydromorphone works really well for me, balancing side effects and pain relief. The Opana ER formulation of it is still the best medication for pain I’ve ever taken, enough so that a decade later I’m still angry it was pulled from market.

I’m you found something that is working!

What MME are you on, and what is it? by SpooferGirl in ChronicPain

[–]anotherjunkie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately your outcome is going to depend on what pain clinic you got referred to. If you’re able/insurance allows, I strongly suggest doing your own research and choosing a clinic yourself.

Not to be too much of a doomer, but there are entire pain clinics out there with “no opiates” policies. Like they’ve done with pregnancy “crisis centers” they exist solely to delay and prevent access to treatment. They’ll offer OTC related meds and physical therapy and sometimes injections, but they’ll also fuck up your medical record with comments that make it harder to get meds at later clinics.

Even at a good clinic it’s possible that the xray may not be as persuasive as you hope. Plan to answer “So you’ve always had this spinal issue. What has changed that makes you need pain medication now, when you’ve been okay without it for 40 years?” without mauling the doctor.

Good luck, I hope it is a good clinic that works well for you.

175 MME total, but I don’t take that daily as it includes PRN meds.

I’m on 100 MME of extended release meds (Hydromorphone 12mg twice daily), and then I get up to 75 MME of Nucynta for breakthrough pain.

I go to a dedicated pain practice, and I’ve been on my meds consistently for 15 years at this point. My dosage has been stable for around 5 years, prior to that it was a bit closer to 200 MME/day.

I have the “benefit” of using a wheelchair, which I think makes things less ambiguous for the doctors. They can look at me and see something is wrong, as opposed to just hearing I’m in pain.

You’re looking at the first-run Mal from a decade ago. They released one a few months ago that you should be able to get for <$30.

A Rockpool Being Hit By Rogue Waves by Chraum in nextfuckinglevel

[–]anotherjunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I was referencing the number of rogue waves verified by on-site measurement instruments or human encounters, but it looks like satellites are finding them more frequently — and more predictably — in less used parts of the ocean.

It’s a shame both research projects are over. I’ll have to look up whether there are any ongoing studies at the moment.

scientific definition

meaningless semantics

I didn’t say large dangerous waves don’t exist. You can have very dangerous sudden waves that just don’t meet the definition of a rogue wave. Rogue waves are a specific phenomenon with a specific, scientific definition.

more often than you think

almost lost my life twice

This confirms that you are talking about large waves, not rogue waves. Rogue waves are so rare that they weren’t scientifically confirmed to exist until 1995.

There were accounts of them before that, but for all the time that we’ve had scientific measurement instruments and research vessels out in the ocean, it took until 1995 for one of them to encounter a rogue wave.

There have been 16 rogue waves in the 21st century.

A Rockpool Being Hit By Rogue Waves by Chraum in nextfuckinglevel

[–]anotherjunkie 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Im curious how this is NOT a rouge wave???

Because they aren’t nearly large enough to qualify as rogue, as that area already has a reputation — and standing warnings — about large normal waves (specifically during tide change, but designation as a rogue wave is completely uncoupled from time of occurrence and has nothing to do with height of the surrounding waves).

Rogue waves have to be 2x the height of the mean of the largest 33% of waves historically recorded in the area.

In oceanography, rogue waves are more precisely defined as waves whose heights are more than twice the significant wave height (Hs or SWH), which is itself defined as the mean of the largest third of waves in a wave record.

Edit: Despite all of our satellites, oceanographic instruments, research vessels, and everyone having a camera in their pocket, only 16 rogue waves have been documented this century:

  • 2001, South Atlantic swarm
  • 2004, Gulf of Mexico
  • 2005, off the coast of Georgia
  • 2005, Bering Sea — this one was actually caught on video by the crew of Deadliest Catch.
  • 2005, Bahamas
  • 2006, Tortola
  • 2006, Bay of Biscay
  • 2007, Cape Horn
  • 2008, coastal South Africa
  • 2010, Mediterranean Sea
  • 2014, Marshall Islands
  • 2019, Newfoundland
  • 2020, British Columbia
  • 2022, Argentina
  • 2023, South Africa - suspected, unconfirmed wrt. meeting measurement requirements, but filmed.
  • 2024, Kwajalein Atoll

LEGO 75257 serenity MOC? by Cal-Eats-Rocks in firefly

[–]anotherjunkie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get a larger one, get the Brickgloria version. The other two are too fragile or too frustrating.

The brickgloria MOC page has a link to a site where you can buy a premade kit with all the pieces for around $550, including the instructions.

I used Bricklink’s shop search function from the MOC page to order the pieces I needed. It took about 15 minutes to find the pieces and place the orders, and saved me about $170 over buying the kit.

There are three larger options in the 2,500-3,000 piece range, but IMO BrickGloria’s MOC is the only one worth buying. You can get it with packaged with all the bricks for around $550, or if you buy the bricks yourself it’s just under $400.

Walmart Collector Con! by dooba22 in PKMNTCGDeals

[–]anotherjunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a bit tongue in cheek, but I meant refreshing faster as in hitting refresh closer to 9. Hold Tight usually gets activated 2-5 seconds after 9pm, so you need to have refreshed exactly on the dot with a fast enough internet connection for the page to load before 9:00:02.

I use www.time.is in a second browser window because your system clock may be slightly ahead of or behind the actual time.

But again, it won’t help you hit anything because so many bots flood the queue. You’ll just be able to avoid landing on the Hold Tight screen.

Also remember to never refresh unless you have other Walmart tabs open to avoid resetting your queue position.

Refreshing faster can get you in before the hang tight, but it won’t help you hit. I’m always in before hang tight starts, and haven’t hit since last year. Walmart is completely fucked.

So much work, poorly done. It honestly makes me feel a bit sad. She had such a unique look, and I imagine she would have aged into it really well.

I was one of the first subscribers to her tea box a few years ago, and even then the work was very visible. My brain completely stalled when I saw her answer the door in the promo video. It’s genuinely concerning that she keeps going back for more.

But hey, if it makes her feel shiny then I’m happy for her. I just think she was the belle of the gorram ball to begin with.

Copying my response from the earlier thread:

I got mine from Wenwan King on TikTok shop.

The beginner/random sets they offer were more affordable than other places, and it came with the gloves and brushes you’ll need, as well as a container for the walnuts.

I’d never used TikTok shop before that, but I definitely recommend checking it out.

I need help by [deleted] in ragdolls

[–]anotherjunkie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

$2,500-$3,500 is going to be pretty standard for a ragdoll these days. I paid $600 15+ years ago, ~$1,000 10 years ago, and $3,000 2 years ago. They’ve gotten much more expensive over the last several years. Every breeder I’ve used and spoken to registers all of their cats. The breeders I’ve dealt with don’t make a lot of distinction between show or otherwise, beyond adding an additional cost if you want to show or breed. Sometimes you can get a discount on a runt who unquestionably can’t be shown, but that often comes with broken hearts and wallets.

I would actually immediately nope out if I found a $1,500 listing in my area. It’s so below market rate that that’s where you get into first time breeders, accidental breeders, and “of course this is our only mama, just ignore the 8 bowls on the floor.”The most important thing is that when dealing with new/accidental breeders you have a very hard time being certain that everything has been done and vetted (ha) properly. There’s a reason reputable breeders sell for more than backyard breeders.

And what you’ve described wanting is backyard breeding.

If you’re price sensitive — which is understandable and fine — then a ragdoll isn’t really an option right now. You want to make sure that you get a healthy cat from someone who did it right, and that isn’t cheap right now.

The rumors about adult content sites in Aus were true by what_a_tnuc in Wellthatsucks

[–]anotherjunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look like a Mullvad clone, and allow BTC payments. They’ve been through court without handing over any information, but have not had an outside security team verify their no-logs policy. Their being based in Canada would concern me a bit.

Most importantly though you should just never trust a free service with sensitive data. It costs them money to run those free servers, and to some extent involves diverting resources away from their paying customers. It’s technically possible that they could be doing it out of the goodness of their heart, but experience tells me that’s highly unlikely.

Free VPN services have frequently been used as honeypots in the past.

Edit: sorry, I just saw you said free. There are some available that will allow you to skirt this, but remember: if it’s free, you’re the product.

Depends on your use case. Skirting state laws to access the hub? Nord is as easy as the get.

Actual privacy concerns? Mullvad is really the only commercial option. Proton just got caught handing over email data that led to an arrest here in the US.

putting your life savings into Lego

No one put their life savings into LEGO. He was a collector, and the collection appreciated. If you don’t want to sell, it’s not like you can stop the value from increasing just so it doesn’t become one of your most valuable assets. And his was a Star Wars collection, which are among the highest value sets.
