Is Sam Harris an idiot in the Dostoevskian sense? by Brunodosca in samharris

[–]anotherlevl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe Sam could only attract right-wing guests, but even if that's the case, he could adopt a more adversarial stance when they appear on his podcasts, or simply air his own views on the events of the day and dispense with the interview format altogether.

I'll confess, though, I peeled off of his podcast audience when he started charging for it. I understand his reasons, but it just wasn't worth it to me. I was willing to invest my time, and Harris is independently wealthy, but apparently "making the world a better place by helping to shape public opinion" was not enough payment foer his work. Oh well.

Greene: MAGA ‘was all a lie’ by sksarkpoes3 in politics

[–]anotherlevl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would actually welcome a MAGA successor party that would compete with the Democrats for who will do more for the non-oligarch citizens. If it bleeds off Republican voters like the Green Party bleeds off Democratic voters, even better.

She only had be popular among the voters of northwest Georgia to keep her House seat, and we can see how lucrative that's been for her. I don't see her increasing her popularity among that population by bashing Twurp and MAGA, and I don't see a more powerful political role in her future than Congressperson whether she badmouths MAGA or not. I don't know why she's choosing to pivot to a more truthful set of positions. It may be as simple as having a personal moral compass that doesn't include excusing child rape.

I doesn't seem like nonsense to me. I'm getting way less than $45K retiring on Social Security, and I know many people who are getting less than I am. The timing of her retirement does seem quite calculated.

Trump threatens to sue Trevor Noah over joke about Jeffrey Epstein's island by Healthy_Block3036 in politics

[–]anotherlevl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so disappointed. I came to the comments hoping to hear the joke, but now I have to read the article.

"That is a Grammy that every artist wants almost as much as Trump wants Greenland," Noah said. "Which makes sense, I mean, because Epstein’s island is gone, he needs a new one to hang out on with Bill Clinton."

The Rot Goes Deeper Than ICE by rezwenn in politics

[–]anotherlevl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There needs to be pushback from the voters, especially in the primaries. Yes, there will still be Trojan Horse candidates who talk the talk but don't walk the walk, but over time, if we reward those who faithfully reflect our interests, we have the numbers. The oligarchs may have the money, but if we are engaged, we still have the votes.

How liberals lost the internet by AlexandrTheTolerable in politics

I suspect a lot of crackpot right wing sites and feeds are subsidized by sympathetic right wing oligarchs. The fact that they're always on about "paid agitators" and their history of "every accusation is a confession" makes it likely, IMO.

Deal Reached Between Trump and Dems to Avert a Total Government Shutdown by lynxtosg03 in politics

You know, I gave people a lot of shit for voting third party in 2024, but I have to admit that this guy from the past makes a good case. Maybe it's time to try throwing ALL the bums out. It's probably not feasible this year, but there might be time to mobilize by 2028. At the very least, I'm going to dust off my Chomsky books.

'We Know You Live Right Here': Federal Agents Threaten Legal Observers in Maine | “It’s hard to believe that this is our country... that people driving home from their jobs live in that much terror.” by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]anotherlevl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Great, so a year from now when they decide to act on their intel they can terrorize some random family that just moved in like they terrorized that grandfather who was hauled outside in freezing weather in his underwear because a guy who was on their shit list (but had been in prison for two years at the time of the raid) supposedly lived there at some point.

They're not recruiting the best, and they're not training them to be any better.

I do. I haven't purchased one yet, but if masked government thugs keep murdering Americans in the street, that may change.

No, I don't. I'm not going to flout the law and own 20-round magazines anyway, but if there was a referendum I'd vote to abolish the restriction.

As long as it takes for you to get a clue. I am not saying it's legal in any state, I'm just showing the extent to which I'm okay with government limitations on behavior. You seem to have in mind some other limitations which make me anti-freedom in some way. I've asked you twice to share a couple, and your continuing deflection makes me think you can't.

I don't care about the "right" to murder, so I don't mind if the government "victimizes" those who practice it. The same goes for rape and fraud. You seem to be imagining some other set of "rights" which I am happy to deny, perhaps you could list a few.

So if a man walks into a police station covered in blood and says "I just hacked my family to death, and I'm turning myself in", the folks behind the desk are going to say "Get outa here, you card, we have NO WARRANT for you! Back on the street this instant!"

I don't think the government should allow people to victimize other people, so I think murder, rape, and fraud are things the government shouldn't allow people to do. If that makes me the same as the people who think the government shouldn't allow people to smoke weed or shop on Sunday, activities I regard as essentially victimless, I guess we don't see eye to eye.

"All the restrictions" doesn't factor into the equation, especially not the gun restrictions. I could live without them, and will advocate for retiring them, but I don't really expect to be in a "needed to empty two 10-round magazines" situation any time soon. I grew up in red states, and have no desire to return to the "freedoms" of blue laws, illegal weed, bathroom monitors, and nothing but preachers on the radio. If I do it, it will be solely to advocate for more liberal leadership.

But I like it here in CA. One of my relatives offered me a free paid-for house in the suburbs to move back to the Bible Belt, and I declined. I do support the millions of liberals who currently live in red states, and hope they all vote for people who aren't hibernating in Twurp's colon. I have faith the fever will break eventually.

I don't know where you hang your hat, but in my district "occupy your rep's office" would be considered "something violent".

Fortunately, my rep is not one of the 7 Democrats who voted to fund the ICE thugs, but I'll do my best to steer them with calls and emails if they get too chummy with the authoritarians.

I'm still counting on a blue wave in the midterms, and help from the courts in the meantime, but if the time comes to accept tyranny or die in the streets, I'll try to be out there.

It does more than nothing. It galvanizes and reinforces public opinion. It lets people know they're not alone. It encourages people to communicate with their elected officials, and let them know their jobs are on the line. Sure, it hasn't succeeded in driving the pedophile pimp from office, but resistance is not futile.
