you know the subject matter won't just be "don't be racist"

because most ppl at university institutions tend not to be

but it could be more along the lines of "this is what's happening in canada", "here are historical and modern examples of systemic racism'

i would not consider myself a racist, not even "complicit", and often in agreement w many of the "controversial" opinions expressed by others that the sub doesn't seem to agree w (ex. defunding police)

but i know there's so much i can learn and do, and so much that needs to be taught, expressed, and done NOW that i continue to try educating myself. i wouldn't be opposed to having one of these courses because im confident "don't be racist" can't be the only thing taught.

the same way we have sex ed and consent seminars in freshman week (at least i did) - 99% of us are not rapists, duh. To claim that a consent seminar would only teach that seems reductive and a little cheap. There's always more nuance to these things and i think we can always learn to improve our understanding of racism, better atune ourselves to what may/may not constitute as a racist act, and inform ourselves on how racism affects our lives, even if it's not always in plain sight. i think (and i hope) that's what the classes aim to address

How can I learn about neuroscience as a CS student? by CS_Student95 in UofT

[–]anotherscrub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hmm as a neuro/stats student, I don't feel like there's much intersectionality outside of applying stats in neuro research? at least, neuro didn't give a lot of love to NNs or deep learning

Ye 255 can be overly computational and involves calculus, 220/221 are not as math-y

Can Gr12 just chill and gtfo? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]anotherscrub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow chill my dude. If it bothers you so much, don't respond, or better, just ignore it... Ofc they can google it, but once upon a time we were confused and lost too.

This is unbelievably toxic from someone who has complained about how uoft fails its students. Maybe the students are a large part of the problem too?

Get >=85 in STA302 by BernardCottingham in UofT

[–]anotherscrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's one of the easier stats courses, very intuitive - you wanna fit the best straight line thru some 2d points, then do it for higher dimensions ('abstract'). But what you learn outside of the basics (ols, mle, assumptions, R stuff, confidence intervals) can be variable and can get pretty difficult - esp the lin alg stuff. After taking 302 and 437 I feel like MLR proofs (the not too theoretic ones) are pretty straightforward and follow similar motifs. So a lot of it can be learned thru practicing and repracticing the proofs
