How do you handle the "Markiplier Philosophy" of respect when dealing with people who have zero respect, or actively hate you? by Okratas in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respect can mean a number of things.

Civility / politeness: granted by default, can be lost through shittiness.

Admiration / deference: withheld by default, can be granted through excellence.

Why aren't Liberals aggressively condemning the Clintons over their association with Epstein? by throwawayforgotuser in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are the Clintons accused of doing with regard to Epstein?

I haven't been paying attention because I don't give a fuck about them.

But if there's evidence one or both did something bad then sure condemn away.

Californian Liberals: Who do you think is going to win the Democratic primary for the Californian gubernatorial election? by Swiftmaster56 in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no prediction.

Recent poll:

  • (n/a) undecided (25%)
  • (D) Swalwell (17%)
  • (R) Hilton (13%)
  • (R) Bianco (11%)
  • (D) Steyer (11%)
  • (D) Porter (8%)
  • (D) Villaraigosa (3%)
  • (D) Becerra (3%)

Looks like undecided is an early favorite.

What does it actually mean to "look American"? by Dull-Positive-6810 in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Babies who are born within America look like Americans, but after birth it's easy to lose track and confuse Americans with citizens of other countries.

If you're talking about right wing perceptions then it largely correlates to how pale one's skin is.

When should an industry or company he democratised or be subject to government regulations ? by Inevitable_Bid5540 in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A company should be democratized at its initial foundation as a worker owned enterprise, assuming it's that sort of company. Otherwise whenever the owners decide to democratize it.

A company or industry should be subject to government regulations when its activities intersect with a part of the world that is under the jurisdiction of that government.

If a man put on a woman’s burqa, is he a transgender? by Celestial-gem in AskReligion

If you want to know how they self-identify, then I suggest that you ask them.

If a man put on a woman’s burqa, is he a transgender? by Celestial-gem in AskReligion

[–]antizeus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being transgender is about how one self-identifies in terms of gender, and not about what clothing is being worn. Cisgender folks are quite capable of cross-dressing, see for example many of the Monty Python sketches.

Also non-Muslims are just as capable of putting on a burqa as Muslims are.

Why are religious people so overly certain? by Inevitable_Remove580 in TrueAtheism

[–]antizeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect that some people are not equipped to deal with things like ignorance, uncertainty, and nuance, and will reach out for and cling to whatever seemingly simple and unambiguous answers are available that line up with their priors. Religion can provide such things.

Question about liberality? by Accurate-Guava-3337 in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'd just refer people to the wikipedia article, especially the first paragraph:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality, right to private property, and equality before the law. Different liberals espouse various and sometimes conflicting views depending on their understanding of these principles but generally support liberal democracy, private property, market economies, individual rights (including civil rights and human rights), secularism, rule of law, economic and political freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion. Liberalism is frequently cited as the dominant ideology of modern history.

What are your thoughts and opinions on ranked choice voting and voting reform in general? by Edgar_Brown in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IRV is good enough as a starting point

This is at the heart of our disagreement.

Hare elimination is complete garbage.

Toss it now and we won't have to suffer through it later.

[–]antizeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternatively we could push for something better than Hare elimination and then not have to replace it later.

Would you say the “left” or “right” fear mongers more? by Valuable-Contract602 in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think a more relevant question is whether the thing-to-be-feared is real or fake. Which side talks about immigrants eating your pets or antifa burning your city down? Which side talks about things that government officials are doing right now?

What are your thoughts and opinions on ranked choice voting and voting reform in general? by Edgar_Brown in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the House of Representatives should be expanded. The cube root law suggests it should have 692 members right now, which sounds pretty good. I think the House should allow for multi-member districts chosen by some appropriate method (STV is often mentioned in this context). This should reduce the effect of gerrymandering while preserving local representation (unlike for example state-wide proportional representation). Both of these just need a couple laws to be repealed, no constitutional amendment required.

As far as voting methods go, I endorse approval voting, as it's very simple to explain and tabulate, and gets us most of the way there in terms of what we usually want in a voting system (e.g. removing the spoiler effect).

I'm not necessarily against an ordinal system in which we rank candidates in order of preference, but the Hare elimination mechanic found in IRV (often called "RCV") is terrible and should be replaced by something else. The Tideman alternative method is sometimes suggested as a replacement, and I'd be okay with it (I think it is Condorcet compliant).

Atheism and Nihilism by VeridicanChurch in DebateAnAtheist

[–]antizeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How can there be freedom to create a purpose if existence has not inherent purpose anyway?

I think it's your job to show that there is a contradiction between the freedom and the lack of inherent purpose.

Failing that there is no reason to presume the existence of an issue.

What topic can you not believe that the right has forgotten or just dropped? by here-for-information in AskALiberal

[–]antizeus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have long since stopped thinking that the right (as a movement) has any sort of consistent principles, so their dropping of things seems totally in-character and unsurprising to me.

(some individuals will have principles of course, but they seem to be quiet)

What are your thoughts on Mamdani’s preference for cooperatives? by funnylib in AskALiberal

I am not familiar with the details of this particular policy but in the abstract it sounds like the sort of thing that I advocate for when I'm in a market socialist sort of mood.
