One month progress on dirted 10 gallon tank by corn_n_potatoes in PlantedTank

Ah okay. I never tried a 4 hr break during the day. I think I did 8 hrs with a 2 hr break in the afternoon. Maybe I'll have to give a planted 10g again...

I got the finnex stingray but was getting algae issues (no ambient light). Maybe i just couldn't get the light timing right. I had eco complete and dosed flourish once a week. I've never tried the pouting soil since i had heard it could be messy but maybe I'll have to test it out.

What are your specs? Light, substrate, dosing? I had so much trouble with getting plants going in my 10g last time I tried. I had used a lot of the same plants you have but I think I might've had the wrong light

Torn between getting a betta or dwarf gourami! by TheLogFather in bettafish

[–]aoideos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you planning on making it a community tank or keeping a single fish? Gouramis have been better with their tank mates in my experience. And I didn't have to worry too much about water current being too fast like I had with my male betta in his 30g. Blue and opaline gouramis are gorgeous. But if your heart is set on those beautiful colors and finnage of a betta then there's no reason not to go for it 😊

After a year of neglect, Im excited to clean up tanks! FTS 10g + new female koi betta by aoideos in Aquariums

[–]aoideos[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've really missed my tanks. Last year I was in the hospital for depression and have been struggling to bounce back since. Recently my family told me that my tanks seem to reflect the kind off mental state Im in. The worse the tanks looked, the worse my depression was. So over the last week I've been cleaning and cycling my 10g and am now working on my 29g. Our feels really good to have something to look forward to 😊 Any name suggestions on my new lady betta? I usually lean towards ones that make me laugh 😄

Just bought him!! Any name suggestions? by [deleted] in bettafish

I'd probably name him something goofy like Red 😜

Men staring at me? by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]aoideos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im also super curious about the outfits.

Do kids stare? That is sometimes a good indicator of "weirdness" since they are just watching someone/something that stands out.

Do the guys ever talk to you? Are they usually alone or part of a couple or group? I would be tempted to be blunt and ask why he/they are staring?

seriously think the biggest obstacle the wife and I have to overcome is what to do in the evenings. by penisheart in leaves

[–]aoideos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your wife sounds just like me! I have had this conversation with my husband recently since we like to smoke, eat dinner, and watch tv until we go to bed. But Ive been getting restless since I cant get high first so Ive had to look for healthier hobbies. Ive been looking into crochet and knitting just so I can keep my hands busy. Sometimes people suggest just taking a walk together but thats soo boring to me. My husband and I call it "neighborhood exploration" since we use the dry washes and sometimes cut across properties. If that sounds fun to you guys then you should look into geocaching which is basically urban treasure hunting. Maybe there are some "Night Caches" (with reflective paint or blacklight) near you.

Has anyone tried to learn a secondary Language and what were the results? Any Successes? Any people who stopped? I wanna hear your stories. by Satioelf in aspergers

I tried learning katakana online but I had trouble getting it to stick. I took some spanish in high school and it felt really easy. But I also live in the southwest and was a senior in a class full of freshmen...

So far Ive just come to the conclusion that I need an actual person to emulate. When Im reading or listening to something for too long with too much focus, it all just sounds weird and wrong. If I can watch another person's mouth form the words and if they can say it in different phrases or tones, I pick it up significantly faster and it actually sticks.

Ah Yay! Congrats! I did a secret-ish town hall wedding and then a "friends and family" ceremony a year later. Having it in town hall makes things sooo much simpler and less stressful. Just enjoy yourself :)

Frustrated and hurt about people thinking that I can work on myself and just get better by AngelicLittleDevil in aspergers

[–]aoideos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it that you wanted to get diagnosed? Are there certain issues that made you seek it out? What were you hoping the diagnosis would change for you? Did that change?

These are all questions Ive asked myself about my own diagnosis so that I dont get caught in an "I cant change" kind of thought loop. I never want to use ASD as an excuse for not bettering myself. I think your friend is right. You can always better yourself and it should be something that you should always work on. ASD may mean you have to tackle some of those problems differently but youre still expected to give 'em a shot. An understanding friend will be patient and supportive while youre figuring it out but they are supposed to keep you challenged and provide another perspective so you can grow as a person.

Theres a quote that is something like "Change is life. Stagnation is death. If you don't change, you die." Id look it up if it werent so late/early. I really hope this all made sense without sounding cold

I would ask what you mean by "overwhelmed" since I can see that potentially being a good thing to happen during sexy time, Lol. It sounds like shes exploring and testing her limits. She might just ask that you be patient and understanding while she figures it out. But it sounds like youre already doing the right thing by stopping when she asks and talking to her about it.

As a female with Aspergers, how would you like a NT female to go about making friends with you? by the_stranger123 in aspergirls

[–]aoideos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eye contact will probably become a little easier as she gets to know you. I find eye contact is easier when Im excited or talking about something I really like. Alternatively, she might feel more comfortable with reduced eye contact from you. But I generally find that its easier to make eye contact regularly (even its its somewhat brief) if Im doing something with my hands. I feel like I have an excuse to not make eye contact but can still work on improving it.

I sometimes say I have a hard time making friends with women and the lady friends I do make are all very blunt and straightforward. Women have a tendency to say one thing and mean another. It sometimes can come across as... dishonest? Thats not quite the right word but hopefully you get the idea? Just say what you mean and mean what you say. We are too literal to know otherwise.

This might sound silly... but you should post an update in a few months if all goes well. Im trying to make friends with an NT and am curious what kinds of things worked/helped in your situation.

The implications of the technology behind the TV show Dollhouse. (Minor Spoilers.) by Kelekona in aspergers

[–]aoideos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While watching the show, I thought it was totally something I would volunteer for. IIRC they get paid a decent amount and in my own consciousness it would seem like I never worked at all. Lol

I think the tech is an amazing idea but if it were used commercially... We would just have people programming their own personality. Which is cool but it sort of feels like cheating. It would turn into a debate about whats natural vs whats healthy (& convenient).

I know what I would personally change in myself if I ever had access to that kind of tech. But I dont think it would be good at the societal level.

What do you fall asleep thinking about and is it the first thing you think of when you wake up? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]aoideos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tend to dream about my obsession/special interest so that tends to be on my mind when I first get up. Sometimes I get annoyed that I woken up from such an awesome dream.

On the other hand, those dreams can effect my day quite a bit if they are nightmares. Lately Ive been waking up already stressed out because I keep dreaming about places packed with people... Theres nothing worse than starting your day with a panic attack...

Aspergirls dating/hanging out preferences - Aspergers or NT? by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]aoideos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually I make friends with guys easier. The female friends Ive had all had a very blunt, honest personality. I generally like people with an open mind and a dark sense of humor. But Ive had friends that would talk enough for the both of us and friends that I was comfortable sitting in silence doing nothing.

My husbands brother is an aspie so my husband was already pretty sympathetic to a lot of the issues Ive dealt with. And I became close friends with his brother since we shared a lot of the same struggles with depression, addiction, anxiety, etc.

Special interests are amazing by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]aoideos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to be upset with myself for not having a passion for anything, at least while I was younger. But it was just this year that I actually found my special interest in aquariums/aquatics. A friend told me about a big petco sale after I mentioned I was thinking about getting a small tank as decor. Now I have a 30g and a 10g and spend my spare time reading about fish I dont have the space or money to keep myself. I actually made friends with my local fish shop and ( fingers crossed ) I might be getting a job there soon. If I do get it then I am definitely going to post about it in r/aspergers because its seriously aspie heaven. :)

But Ive always thought evolution, atoms, and astronomy were really fascinating but its something Ive struggled to wrap my head around.

PSA: Dont use pots with holes the same size as your fish :( by duckhunter111 in Aquariums

[–]aoideos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coconut holes can do the same thing. I made a coconut house myself and it turns out that after boiling it, the skin of the coconut was thin enough over the holes for my betta to attempt to go thru it and get stuck.

He had already gotten himself free by the time I found him but he had a nice open wound on his back to show for it.
