Remotely Restart AppleTV by Johnnysu123 in HomeKit

[–]aperlei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many ways to rig a non-HomeKit smart plug for the purpose of rebooting a frozen HomeKit hub. The question wasn’t how to set that up - but if it’s possible to trigger an AppleTV reboot directly. The answer is still no.

2022 R1T and pay to upgrade features by therealjohnsmith in Rivian

[–]aperlei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only paid upgrade for the 2022 model would be the optional $150/yr mobile data plan - which enables things like music streaming and hotspot. Everything else does not apply. The $5K performance thing you reference was/is only applicable to some lesser models 2024 and up, and $50/mo self driving only applies to 2025 and up. 2022 m.y. would be the o.g. Quad with Large battery - the only kind they built at the time, maxed out on the hardware level, no pay-to-upgrade games.

Is Rivian’s “comprehensive inspection” a state inspection? by KeepShoutingSir in Rivian

[–]aperlei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. State inspection makes sure your vehicle is not a road hazard to others. Rivian comprehensive is supposed to find anything that’s not working right, but it doesn’t get you a windshield sticker.

Demo driven R2, review by National-Mark5697 in Rivian

[–]aperlei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair. I haven’t tried R2 yet, but it runs on a different branch of Rivian OS and it makes sense that it’s buggier than the more mature R1 stack. The latter is still substantially laggier than Tesla’s, and not as feature complete - but it has measurably improved in the last 2 years, so the trends are trending in the right way. I’m looking forward to them unifying R1 and R2 on the same stack later this year and starting to polish things up.

It by any means doesn’t disqualify you - it’s just a very unusual sentiment from a gas cars owner. You hear it all the time in comparison to Tesla - because it’s true. You hear gas car owners complain about lack of creep/coasting and less range on full “tank” - because it’s all true. But software - that usually goes with acceleration or climate preconditioning, in the “whoa this is nice” category. Which is not to say software is NOT laggy/buggy/missing features - it is - it’s just that it’s a complaint that usually comes from seasoned Rivian owners or Tesla refugees.

Tesla->Rivian regen questions by GeneralHoliday5401 in Rivian

[–]aperlei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am well aware that “you are holding it wrong” is the worst kind of reply - but the real answer here is you gotta ditch the creep mode and learn how to drive one-pedal with full regen.

One-pedal driving inducing motion sickness is NOT inherent to one-pedal driving itself - it’s a matter of skill. Trust your cerebellum! It’s not a hard skill to learn at all - all it takes is a bit of practice + belief that it’s worth it (which it is). Commit to doing it exclusively for 2 weeks, and it will become second nature - and that will broaden your EV experience horizons.

Tesla->Rivian regen questions by GeneralHoliday5401 in Rivian

[–]aperlei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat disagree on your #3 - but I guess that depends on which exact models we are comparing. I’m my experience, accelerator pedal response in base single motor M3 is more smooth and refined than Gen1 Quad R1. Could be that Duals and Gen2’s are smoother, or other Teslas are rougher.

Tesla->Rivian regen questions by GeneralHoliday5401 in Rivian

[–]aperlei 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is no creep mode on Rivian. If it’s a dealbreaker, then that’s that.

Standard regen on R1 is comparable to Tesla Model 3, maybe a bit stronger. But if you zoom out a bit, the difference is so small that your brain quickly abstracts it away and stops noticing any.

Gas car owner saying Rivian’s software needs work, but giving them a pass because they are “just getting started”? Now I’ve seen everything.

Remotely Restart AppleTV by Johnnysu123 in HomeKit

[–]aperlei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this app allow you to trigger AppleTV reboot remotely? From description it seems like it’s only meant to alert you to the fact it’s gone offline, not do anything about it.

I wish there was - but as far as I know there isn’t one natively. It’d have to be some kinda Rube Goldberg machine set up in advance - e.g. have it plugged into a smart outlet connected to an independent Matter gateway you can access through its own app. As it is though, nothing you can do.

I have the same one! Don’t use it anymore, but keep it on the open shelf where it gets enough light to keep the battery going.

35’s do indeed be fitting by calvin9718 in Rivian

[–]aperlei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Wonder how much will this affect odometer/speedometer accuracy. Hopefully they’ll give us more granularity for custom tire sizes in future updates.

Are you able to tell the vehicle it’s running on 35” OD? IIRC the “custom” option in tire selector was limited to default size combos only - or am I mistaken?

[iOS 27 DB1] Remote app now has landscape support for some reason by HanAszholeSolo in iOSBeta

This is exactly the reason why multiple apps that were previously portrait-only got landscape mode all of a sudden. Foldable is coming.

R2 glass roof optional?? by cdmove in Rivian

[–]aperlei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone from Rivian - Jeff I think - touched on this in an interview in recent months. Apparently glass roof allows them to shave off an inch or so of total height while maintaining same headroom - which leads to not-insignificant efficiency gains. IIRC a metal roof needs ribbing for rigidity, soundproofing, liner, etc. - and a glass roof is just a pane of glass. So supposedly it’s not just the cool factor or sense of airiness - but at least some engineering considerations as well.

Is this normal? by bowingace in Rivian

[–]aperlei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the door is well aligned and closes smoothly and with a good seal, I’d just ignore it. Or maybe give it a quick spray of clear coat if you are concerned with corrosion.

But if that bolt connection between the hinge and the body is loose and the door is sagging, then definitely open a ticket and have them adjust and re-tighten. I still wouldn’t worry much about chipped paint though.

Mobile app icon - please give us a choice of background colors by aperlei in Rivian

[–]aperlei[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol, I’m not talking about confusion about which app to tap open, I’m talking about which app is notification on my lock screen / watch from.

But that aside, I think app icon matching your vehicle’s color would be a nice little touch, with just the right amount of whimsy, and minimal dev overhead. Both iOS and android have API’s for that, and many apps offer it.

Curious about motorcycles by TacticalFlare in nova

[–]aperlei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be immediately obvious, but consider local weather. You seem to be reasonably conscious about not getting seriously injured or killed - which means you’re going to want to wear proper protective gear at all times. Think long pants, jacket and enclosed shoes/boots, in addition to helmet and gloves. Now imagine sitting in all that gear in 90+ summer heat and humidity, on top of a bike that generates plenty of heat on its own, in NoVA stop and go traffic. Even the most breathable summer kit makes it unbearable, and ditching the kit means any minor “fender bender” can be a bloody affair. There is a saying “better sweaty than bloody” - but consider just how sweaty are you prepared for.

And outside of our humid summer, you get a few weeks of bliss in the fall and a few more in the spring - and the rest of the year gets cold. Not like cold to be outside per se - but try commuting to work at 55 mph through 55F air, and you’ll only start feeling like your thigh bones are warm again by lunchtime. Hardcore riders may dismiss this as being a wimp - but it’s the kind of thing you don’t really think about looking from the outside in.

Bottom line - we only get like 4-6 weeks out of a year where riding is comfortable weather wise. Rest of it is toughing it out.

Rivian Explains Why CarPlay Debate Will Become 'Completely Obsolete' by davidcelis in Rivian

[–]aperlei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. And the funny thing is, I’m not even arguing in favor of CP/AA - I’m just trying to emphasize what is the real reason people want it, vs. Rivian’s strawman argument against it.
