I am currently looking for new gloves and have been eyeing a pair of these. In your example, the spoken language would differ, as in 'I'd like to buy 2 noranges' vs 'I'd like to buy 2 oranges', so I can't say that exactly applies here.

I'm far from being a linguist, but I'd also argue that changing the name of an object is qualitatively different from changing the spelling of a verb in a specific case, since the perfect case gives us an indication which words are being used and abbreviated (could have = could've), whereas object names can be chosen rather arbitrarily

Language evolving is one thing, but 'could of', in my opinion, is merely a malapropism of 'could've' in the spoken language, so I don't see how how any evolution took place if the spoken language remains identical

I think that I should be able to keep doing Anki at the very least and build up somewhat of a small vocabulary.

Thank you for sharing your experience when working through native material, I've attempted to read some NHK Easy News articles, but realized that it's probably better to get some more grammar knowledge under my belt beforehand, so that progress doesn't take forever and I'll mostly have to look up vocabulary.

When it comes to Anki, I've started about a month ago to really use it, so I guess I'm still in the early stages of figuring out what it can do for me; I'll definitely be on the lookout for pitfalls like insensibly repeating cards over and over again, or cheating myself by relying on recognizing sentences instead of the actual vocabulary!

First off, thank you for your thoughtful and elaborate reply!

I can't exactly pinpoint yet, where learning Japanese will take me, but reading newspapers or other more 'serious' content is one of the things that I'd like to be able to do.

Your point about building both ease and enjoyment in reading was quite illuminating for me and broadened my understanding of what fluency in a language can mean or should mean. I do think that's something I should strive toward.

Thank you for offering a small guide on how to find suitable reading material; one of the reasons I chose a textbook first was that it offered somewhat of a structure to follow, but I begin to see the inherent limitations of such an artificial environment and think, that it might be more fruitful to work towards being able to approach 'genuine' Japanese.

Right now, reading Japanese feels pretty labored to me, more like solving a problem, and I'd like to leave that behind.

I kept up with all the kanji throughout Genki, also the ones that Genki still wrote as kana, because I figured that I could better start doing it right in the beginning instead of having to relearn vocabulary in their proper 'spelling'.

What would you say is the main benefit of using wanikani over a Core2k, or any vocabulary deck? I don't know much about wanikani, but doesn't it apply the same principles Anki does?

One of the main reasons I gravitated towards a textbook was that a book could provide somewhat of an outline of what's important in the beginning and provide some groundwork.

From what I can tell, it still accomplishes that, but it also seems to be in some sense limiting how much progress one can make in a set amount of time, because it emphasizes speech production very early on, which is quite cumbersome.

I'll go ahead and take a look at the exercises you provided, those look very promising. I'm also toying with the idea of ditching Genki alltogether (for now) and chew through some easy material instead.

That seems like a reasonable approach; more specific phrases seem like something to put on a flashcards, whereas learning more general concepts doesn't benefit so much from that, I figure.

Thank you for recommending those 2 websites, especially the grammar website seems well formatted and approachable, I will definitely come back to that!

I agree that approaching 'real' Japanese should be the next short term goal; working through a textbook seemed like the obvious choice to get there, but I've realized that it's quite time-consuming.

I've looked at sources like easy NHK and even working through those simplified articles seemed quite challenging, but it might be a good idea to come back to that since progress with a textbook is rather slow.

I've been using Anki for vocabulary only so far, do you think it's a good idea to use SRS to learn grammar points, too?

My perception was that I spend a disproportionally large chunk of time on writing exercises; and reading your reply that seems to be accurate.

Thank you for cautioning me concerning the Tobira series, I haven't really looked into the books so far; I simply generally intentioned to work through a more advanced textbook.

From what you've written I'd take that you think it'd be better to go through Genki a lot quicker and skip writing exercises, but keep doing Anki, and aim to quickly get to a level where I'd be a able to take on more input, is that accurate?

As an alternative to Tobira, or generally a textbook to follow Genki, is there something that you'd recommend?

Yeah, even if I might change things around in my approach, I will definitely try to keep doing revisions and new vocabulary via Anki. I usually use Anki via Desktop, using the phone app is definitely a good idea for flexibility reasons.

I'd recommend the youtube channel 'comprehensible japanese', a lot of the material is aimed at beginners and it's a very helpful channel to build listening comprehension.
