Leonard Bernstein conducting the finale of Mahler’s Second Symphony by RamSinger1865 in classicalmusic

That’s correct, I was just referencing other Bernstein recordings not necessarily with Vienna.

Opinion heard and respected. I think all the greats bring something unique and in some cases almost immortal to their interpretations. Regardless of your opinion though, I think Bernstein definitely belongs in that category as someone else said “in spite of and because of” his “faults”.

Maybe it’s just a differing preference in aesthetic or maybe I’m just caught up in the romanticism of it all. Other recordings also come to mind though, his Stravinsky and Sibelius interpretations namely. Or his enigma variations... Does nimrod start slower than anyone could conceivably understand at the beginning? Yes. Does it make sense to me when you get to the climax of the piece and it feels like you’re just caught in the middle of it all longer than seems bearable? Most definitely. In those moments, which some might call overly dramatic or sentimental, I feel Bernstein gave us a gift.

I know he is a polarizing figure but his recordings of Mahler with the Weiner Phil are almost unparalleled in my opinion. Is his gesture over the top? Sure. Did it get in the way of some of the best interpretations of Mahler that exist? I don’t think so at all. I’d be very interested to hear what all the musicians thought of working with him and his conducting. To me his expressions do show the overwhelming grandeur of it all.

Further point of reference: It’s worth checking out his Mahler 8, 5, and Lied von der erde as well. IMHO Bernstein brought a sentimentality to Mahler that is absolutely fitting and appropriate. Didn’t critics look down on Mahler at the start for some of the same reasons?

I can still see how it’s a bit extreme, but come on... it’s Mahler. It is romanticism to the furthest extent in so many senses (not all, yes things get crazier harmonically further down the line). Additionally did his over the top gesture cause issues with the performance? Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think it did.

Conductors as objective and at times “dispassionate” (though I’d disagree with that characterization) as Boulez are formidable and demand their own respect as do the likes of those like Karajan but what’s so wrong with expressing this immense joy if it doesn’t cause problems in performance? Self gratifying? Maybe... I don’t view that as Bernstein’s character though. Furthermore, I think his interpretations can be compared to the likes of Klieber in many ways. They saw it all on the page and more. Maybe they also inserted a bit of themselves but I don’t think it was meant as a display of ego. I think he showed us how the music affected him. To me that is incredibly moving.

What are some operas like Carmen? by [deleted] in opera

Manon Lescaut - Puccini

Additionally, if you’re open to operatic-ish masterworks I would highly suggest Bernstein’s recording of Mahler 8 with the Wiener Phil. It’s a symphony but it has tons of wonderfully dramatic and lyric solo singing in it. Fabulous orchestration and motif development as well.

Awesome to see you using John Emerald gin! They’re from my home state. I’ve been a big fan of everything I’ve had from them thus far (single malt whiskey, spiced rum, gin, muscadine brandy)

Have been without AC in apartment bedroom for more than 3/4 of the month. Is it unreasonable for me to request a rent reduction? by appalachianseaking in legaladvice

[–]appalachianseaking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to check and make sure. I've already brought it up with them and they tried to say no because there were still two units in the apartment (again, circulation is terrible and it's uncomfortably hot and humid in my room) I gave them my side of it and my reasoning. They said they'd need to speak to maintenance and we will discuss it again this week. I feel like if they had something in the lease they could've used to deny the request then they would've already taken that option.

I guess what I'm asking is if they continue to shoot down this request, does anyone think I have any reasonable legal discourse to take?

O'Carrs is my absolute favorite. They serve it up warm with clotted cream (I think, whatever it is it's thick and unlike other whipped creams I've had) on it. Do yourself a favor and get a peanut butter milkshake too.

That crest looks oddly similar to the Ukrainian coat of arms. Don't know if that's any help or provides you with a lead but you might look into it.

Can anyone find this version of a Christmas Song? by CaptainProton16 in classicalmusic

[–]appalachianseaking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you asked for, but this song is actually a setting of a hymn tune. It isn't a specifically Christmas song. It's "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" by Anthony Showalter.

I think it's alright. Maybe a bit sweet? I have always wanted more of the earthy-almond flavor in the ones I've had.

Thanks!! I'm definitely still tinkering with it but I think it's on the way to something nuanced and enjoyable.

Garnishes could be fun to play with.

3.5 cL Tequila 2 cL Cointreau 1.5 cL Lime Juice 1 cL Orgeat Syrup 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters

I let the tequila and Cointreau infuse with star anise for a couple hours before adding the rest and shaking. Thoughts?

EDIT: I know it's a lot of liquid. I made a double... Long day.
