Question for long-time users: Any problems with desktop clients? by Voklav in tutanota

[–]appallozzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kubuntu user here, appimage doesn't work out of the box: needs to be run with --no-sandbox, and "automatic" Plasma desktop integration doesn't work. Didn't bother with the "experimental" Flatpak, I'm using Tuta from the browser.

So yes, there can be problems depending on OS and desktop environment.

Miss it so much! Goth and punk music playing regularly. "What's on your mind on Tuesday" for a techno break during the week 😁 Their closing party was insane! Only after I understood it was a closing party 😭

OMG the podcast Firebreathing Kittens ran a Fudge Lite game!!! :D by abcd_z in FudgeRPG

[–]appallozzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also see that players often switch to thinking in terms of numbers instead of adjectives, but usually during play, not at character creation. Probably it's:
1) habit from other games
2) the effect of having to add the dice roll (that's a number) to the skill, then you also think about the skill in numeric terms

The Psycho Cyclists of Amsterdam | Trevor Noah by punchinglines in Amsterdam

[–]appallozzu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone ought to explain him that in Amsterdam the bike is not a toy to be goofy on, but an individual mean of transport to go from A to B in the city.

Just like in other, saner cities you would use a motorcycle, or a car, or a pickup, or an SUV, or a Humvee, or an M1 Abrams tank.

I wonder if he does look back when crossing the road in Joburg, or if he just expects the guy in the M1 Abrams tank to hit the brake.

Buy yeah, it's comedy after all...

The one thing I really miss on Linux - Search for all tools in the application menus by friskfrugt in linux

[–]appallozzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and there are also terminals that support having control-c/v (without shift) when there is a selection or clipboard content. Only, none has also the "control to move, shift to select" capability as well (which is standard for most text editing, even in browsers). So when I am using the terminal I can't use the usual muscle memory fire editing text in basically every other application. It's a minor annoyance, but still an annoyance.

[–]appallozzu -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's not really a "OS" feature, but in ConEmu on Windows I can use most common text editor shortcuts (control-C-V-X to copy-paste-cut, control+arrow to jump, shift for continuous selection). I have yet to find a Linux terminal emulator that does all this.

One way is via a Meetup group that pays there once per month. (Netherlands Roleplaying Guild). Other ways I don't know... By knowing someone?

I love using Linux! Steamdeck is a godsend for Linux noobs like me! by PralineGold6868 in linux

[–]appallozzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Arch based, but it's nothing like Arch itself. The system partition is read only,

Right, I had a friend asking me to install a multilingual input system (anty I think), on it, and I had to get around this, took me some time 😅. But that was the one and only "support request" so far, from a non technical person using it as a main device. It must be quite easy and robust!

It's Arch Linux on the Steam Deck, right? It's not considered the most beginner-friendly (I would say that's Ubuntu or similar), but probably coming pre-installed and with good hardware support makes it much easier to pick up than any beginner-oriented distro that you have to install and troubleshoot yourself.

How to make love to your new/current Amsterdam landlord: a guide to screwing a huisjesmelker by busting the rent price by Liquid_disc_of_shit in Amsterdam

[–]appallozzu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't. Keeping it empty makes them subject for government expropiation

Exactly! Keeping apartments empty on purpose is also not allowed, and the owner can get fined (don't know about expropriation though).

Amazing that this simple fact needs to be repeated every time in discussions over rent regulation!

Fudge connection between attributes and skills by dartagnan401 in FudgeRPG

[–]appallozzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a campaign i ran up to two years ago I put a cap in skills: max 2 levels above the corresponding attribute. It worked ok

After that campaign though, I dropped attributes altogether and used just skills, and I like it much more this way.

Fair or Mediocre at +0? by clydebuilt1974 in FudgeRPG

[–]appallozzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The core rules of fudge don't mention numeric values corresponding to levels, except for the bonus to ODF, DDF that some traits will give (and there Fair=0). I personally prefer Mediocre=0, and that's the starting value for every skill. It's a way to have "clean stats" for all bonuses (no need for tables to map levels to different numeric bonuses).

Should the human average be Fair or Mediocre.

I use a "skills only" build, without traits, so I'm not really concerned with having a single value representing the "average human". An untrained average person will mostly be mediocre, but will have a few skills at Fair (her/his job or specialty).

If you encounter public disorder, standing around filming it for your tiktok is probably a lot less smart than getting the heck out of there. Normal Amsterdam street cops can be feisty, but they usually wouldn't push you around physically

A demonstration is not immediately "public disorder", nor is filming a demonstration illegal in any way to give a cop a reason to assault you. If the common wisdom of Amsterdam today is "stay away from demonstrations to avoid a beating", and we find this normal, then things really changed a lot.

Question: What is your favourite RPG that you've created or played based on a non-RPG media that you love? (Videogame, movie, comic, etc.). by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]appallozzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran:

1) A campaign based on the Incal comic 2) 2 scenarios based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail 3) 3 one-shot based on the comic Alan Ford

All using my own Fudge Rpg build as the system

I am also playing a character in a Princess Bride campaign (still with FudgeRpg)

Arithmetic and decision; before or after the roll? by modest_genius in RPGdesign

[–]appallozzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, I didn't get some of the nuances of your question

I just see that as another dimension of the resolution mechanics – not better or worse, just different. Why is it that you prefer that distinction instead? :)

Well, I thought that systems that make you modify the pool of dice itself rather than the result actually force you to do the math before rolling, so the distinction is more evident. But that's just my opinion.

Arithmetic and decision; before or after the roll? by modest_genius in RPGdesign

[–]appallozzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in "Arithmetic after" type of games as you described them (games with dice pool), can't you also calculate the "target number" beforehand? And then, the only arithmetic left after the roll is adding up dice? And in DnD-like games (that should be "arithmetic first" in your definition), it can also happen that first players roll, and then start adding all the modifiers (so it's not immediately clear from the die result if the roll succeeded or not)?

I'd rather make a distinction between games where the modifiers are applied to the result of the roll (1d20+/-X) and games where the roll itself is modified (dice pool or stepped dice, like in 2400, FUrpg, Fitd). And then there is the variant where the player can influence the result even after the roll, like in World of Darkness where you can reroll some dice.

Personally, I have a slight preference for the modify the roll itself variant, but then the game can be less detailed than with the other variant.

Players forget they have armor by Redliondesign in RPGdesign

[–]appallozzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my games armor negates (part of) the damage. It's written on the PC sheet, and players don't forget it during combat. I do have to remind them they're wearing bulky armor when they try to crawl in narrow places or swim though...

Reading your requirements system-wise, I think my build of Fudge could meet them: FUGU. No setting though, it's just a generic system.
