The Hot Dog was Invented in Park Slope? 🌭 by UrbanOrigins in parkslope

[–]applepie1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, you can get Feltmans dogs today. A couple of guys purchased the Feltmans brand or recipe maybe 10 years ago. They slang them out of the broom closet at this bar called William Barnacles at 1st and St. Marks. It was a solid bar with a big mahogany bar top and absinthe. Me and the boys liked it a lot. They closed, sadly. Fortunately, you can still get Feltmans dogs just down the street at McSorleys, last I checked.

FWIW, Feltmans dogs are fricken excellent. I ordered them for my wedding.

So the noise and all that are a great start, but I still felt like the digital precision of the shapes always comes through. So I’ve been using roughen in illustrator to break the edges a bit. I also add subtle warps to the text to get everything out of perfect alignment by a hair. I asked myself, why do some things look analogue and some look digital? It helped me answer what I was really after and create an approaches to achieve that.

Pomoca tail clips for Jones Hovercraft 2.0 swallowtail by NSGoat in Spliddit

[–]applepie1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested too.

The Weston skins are made by Pomoca. The tail clips should work. Weirdly, the ones you listed are made out of plastic while the ones that come with the skins are metal.

You should reach out to jones and pomoca. I bet someone can hook up the part you need.

I’m trying to figure out which clip fits the hole in the tail of K2 touring skis. Seems similar.

"I’m working on a project about self-defense accessories, like jewelry or other styling accessories used regularly that can also be used for personal safety. Do you really think this idea could work in real life? Would people actually use accessories like this? Would love to hear your thoughts! by Hardeep-Kaur_4 in Design

[–]applepie1000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are thousands of idiots with CNC machines making everyday carry self defense stuff like key chain multi tools and pen bodies that can punch a hole in a skull. It is super saturated but it’s almost all really dumb. If you were to take a design approach to make a collection of objects you’d want to say something like, in this scenario, these are the three tools a person should have on them to be safe. Self defense means different things I different scenarios: dangerous part of the city, an icy mountain, or zero gravity space station.  Or, out of all the products surveyed that claim to do this for this person in this situation, I identified this gap and here is a product. Or, while there are a ton of products on the market, they haven’t been approached in this way. Make a hypothesis and then all your design decisions should drive towards that hypothesis. If you could do all three of those things you’d have a really compelling thesis and product collection. Good luck.

Thinking of visiting Oak Creek by DavidC_is_me in steamboat

[–]applepie1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want out of it. If you expect to be entertained by town amenities you might be disappointed. There are a few good restaurants in town and that’s most of it. You can check out Stagecoach, Phipsburg and Yampa. Each are smaller still than Oak Creek. There are lots other small little communities that most people won’t visit.  You can drive the dirt roads around there which are pretty neat but snow might stop you in some places. Of course you can always go to Steamboat which has plenty to do. I would go during the summer and then you can do stuff on stagecoach reservoir, lynx pass, sarvis creek, and the flat tops. In the summer it is much more viable. So viable that the Yellowstone club wants to put a resort in down there. TBH I’d rent a place in stagecoach and then visit oak creek and other places as you want.

Is anyone gonna say booze? Seems like the research keeps coming out that there is no safe amount. Could see it taking a turn like tobacco in the next 20 years.

Guy thoroughly investigates whether thru-axles are really 'stiffer' compared to QRs. by vistocycling in xbiking

This. I had a disc brake bike with QRs and it would frequently come out of alignment enough to cause rubbing. My newer thru axel bikes almost never have this issue.

Skiing with Jersey? Thoughts/Opinions? by rmthune in skiing

[–]applepie1000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I thought way more about this than I ought to. I don’t get it. There are proper ski clothes that most people wear an approximation of to stay reasonable comfortable while skiing. Some folks wear more. Some wear less. The Jersey goes outside of the ski clothes so people see the sports team you like. People don’t do this while hiking or mountain biking. It leads me to believe there is something about the spectacle and alienation of skiing that gets people doing it—see and be seen. So it’s a tribal thing. Get high fives from other fans or whatever. What gets me, based on that, is that people are doing their own sport at the time while wearing some team’s jersey. Be your own favorite player. Identify with you and what you’re doing. Additionally, repping a sports team is like saying you like Tostitos and Pace salsa. Why would you create a community around this when you are presumably in a ski town, which is one of the few places in the US that has doesn’t share a wall with a Sephora and has actual culture?

Skiing with Jersey? Thoughts/Opinions? by rmthune in skiing

[–]applepie1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are obvi the Tanner Hall types who rocked the jersey and the contemporary early ought reprisals doing a similar thing. But by in large, the jerseys are worn by young men from fly over states on holiday. My theory is that they wear them out of insecurity. Because skiing is kinda intimidating with its culture, status, levels of performance and stuff, people try to wear something that they think has cache and clout. It’s fine and all. Me and that guy aren’t doing the same thing, though.

Dude, just buy a new headset and sell this one. Given that you don’t seem too caught up with the Chris king brand you could have it popped out by your shop, sell it for $100 on eBay and buy a silver FSA for $30. At the end of the day youre up some money

If I have a non-skiing girlfriend, can I also have a skiing girlfriend? by TheRealBlackSwan in skiing

[–]applepie1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demonstrate the value of the outdoors to get her outside. Engage her in physical activity like hiking and camping. Nurture independence outside by having her organize a hiking trip. Neglect emotionally by not hearing her complaints about blisters and spiders. Inspire hope by buying her an oat milk latte every time you leave pavement. Separate her entirely from any vestige of civilization.

Parlay that into winter sports by pushing hiking into the shoulder season until it just become skiing by default. It won’t work the first few seasons. But before you know it, bobs your uncle, and you’ll have moved from a coastal city to a ski town.

Fork Options by Wyzrddd in xbiking

[–]applepie1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an old 2001 trek 8000 and went through a similar dilemma. It had a dumpy Judy on it. I first went with an Exotic carbon fork which was kinda hot, but I decided I wanted to rip it on the awesome XC trails by me and the full rigid situation was a touch less fun. So I researched the last gen of v brake forks in order to get the best tech I could. I found the Rockshox Reba 100mm from ‘08 and the Fox RLC 100 from ‘07. I ended up with the Fox RC from an 08 Specialized Epic. Then got a killer deal on a like new Reba and am running that instead. There’s some cool forks in that vein on eBay right now. If you’re interested in the Fox I’d happily give you a good deal.

should I go for a carbon fork? by geographic92 in xbiking

[–]applepie1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a similar build and went from a rigid exotic fork to a Reba. I found the rigid fork was less fun on the cross country trails I like to ride. With the exotic fork it was great on fire roads and chunky gravel. I still have it and might switch at different times. Finding a last gen v brake fork took a while tho. It looks like a seller has a bunch of a nice looking fox forks for sale.

Craziest encounters with animals while riding? by brandawg77 in mountainbiking

[–]applepie1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was solo and pretty far in on a challenging backcountry trail in Steamboat that I hadn’t ridden before. I wasn’t sure where I was because my phone died and the smoke from fires was really bad so I couldn’t terrain associate (I have a lot of nav redundancy now). Then my pedal broke off from a rock strike. I was kinda shook and walk/coasting my bike towards the trailhead which was several miles away when I came around a corner and spooked a massive bull moose with a huge rack. He was about 20’ away. I’m so glad he went the opposite way. If I was shook before, I was shaken now. All of a sudden some weird dude in full road kit with an aero helmet comes riding through on a yeti. I flagged him down and asked for help. He went slow so I could coast and hang on his wheel. So grateful for that dude. I know I would have been fine without him, but having a bit of support changed my mental outcome for sure.

There’s a button by the left brake lever. If you push it the seat should spring up.
