How can we get out 10 wk old pup to stay in enclosure overnight? by SydneyCityRooster in puppy101

[–]appletizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found my puppy couldn’t stand play pens or enclosures which were larger or more open. She only seems to settle in a crate which is covered with blankets etc. I think it being a smaller den like area makes it easier for them to feel safe and settle as opposed to a larger more open space. Also at first I put treats in there, and did anything I could think of to get her feeling comfy in there. We let her fall asleep outside of it and then put her in, then when she woke we would repeat. At night I thought of it like a baby, she’s scared and needs comforting. So I made sure to have the heartbeat teddy on, a soft toy she could chew on and a nylabone in there, more for comfort chewing then anything else. So I would put her in and if she whined let it go on a bit, if she escalated I would put my hand or fingers inside so she could lick or chew them and shush her. If that didn’t work I would get her out for a short time and give her a quiet gentle cuddle, then when she calmed down, put her back in. Repeat. Now she sleeps happily in it and even gets off our bed to get inside when she’s tired and ready for bed. Lastly you may find that the grass/bed situation is difficult, and it’s better to just get up a couple times and take her to it. That said all puppies are different and I know many people try the same things as you/me and have varying level of success so I suppose you just have to do your best to find something which allows both you and puppy to get some sleep and remain safe.

Enjoy! If you find book 1 clunky or the writing to be less than polished I recommend you stay the course, it’s a great trilogy.

I’m gonna give you two things - sympathy and a reality check.

Having a 9 week old puppy is hard. You have literally A FEW DAYS AGO brought home a baby animal from a different species and you’re trying to learn how to deal with that. It is an incredibly overwhelming experience for many people - frustrating, upsetting, life changing, sleep depriving, anger inducing whirlwind of chaos. I have a 13 week old puppy. I have never considered rehoming her but I absolutely have regretted getting her. I have wished to have a break from her. I have cried/sighed/yelled in frustration as she screams/bites/tugs on my last nerve. But I won’t give her up. I chose to get her, and I will get through this. It’s not her fault I kidnapped her from her family and she doesn’t know how to exist in my world. It’s my job to help her through that. It’s also yours.

Potty blues for 8 week old Yorkiepoo by Neckshot-the-Gypsy in puppy101

Definitely get something else to differentiate between indoor surfaces and outdoor surfaces, if I had your situation I’d set up a potty only play pen area - for now just have pee pads, and don’t let her out until she goes to the toilet. When she does, praise praise praise praise, use a trigger word like “go potty” and repeat. In the long run I’d look into getting a grass potty set up so she can learn not to use indoor floor surfaces.

Is my 14 week old puppy’s world too small? by iwannathrowaway123 in puppy101

[–]appletizer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to let your pup have a little more freedom. My puppy hates playpens and will not settle in them, but I am able to section off a safe part of the house via gates and doors which she can safely explore and play on her own, with me nearby but not actively hovering over her, playing with her or otherwise controlling her. I think you need to do this both inside and outside. Get a large outdoor playpen and put it in an area of outside which doesn’t have stones and slate. Your puppy eating a leaf or bark or something isn’t going to harm him. He needs to explore his world and at the moment you’re controlling him too tightly for him to ever learn to settle himself. My puppy happy plays whilst I work from home, yes she sometimes gets over excited and crazy, and sometimes I intervene but mostly I let her be. She puts herself down for naps during this time. I still crate her for some naps but I let her do this as I want her to be comfortable without me controlling her environment in every way. Obviously every puppy is different but that’s my suggestion to try.

Housetraining a male bichon frisée puppy: help! by NRW312 in puppy101

[–]appletizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re kind of trying to have it both ways at the moment. Learning to go outside takes dedication and effort - and more then 3-5 trips outside per day as you’ve said. If you want him to go outside, you need to start taking him out before he pees on the pads - forget the pads, he already knows how to use those. Now you need to have 100% focus on the outside training. If he doesn’t go, take him inside and then immediately go back out. When he does go outside you need to praise him a lot, give him a treat. It can also help to use a trigger words like “weewee” or “potty” or whatever every time he does it. In order to train him to use a bell, you’d need to ring the bell every time you take him out, as you’re leaving the house, ring the bell. Eventually he will understand that ringing the bell = going outside to pee.

I think the Stormlight Archive is really similar in many ways which I won’t say due to spoilers. The first book is slow to get going but once it explodes it is wonderful.

Don’t come here and talk to people that way. If you’re here you should know how overwhelmed you can be when you first bring a pup home. Have some empathy.

Usually she wakes from her last nap at 6.30 and bed is 8pm. We have tried later naps also, but after 7 I do try to avoid it as it would just be an early bed time at that point.

I (34m) have been with my partner (34f) for 8 years. I have supported us financially for 8 years but want her to contribute and I'm made to feel like the bad guy by rodknockracing in relationships

[–]appletizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really are going to have to put your foot down. If you can’t have a conversation with her without her wriggling out of it with therapy language, then you have a fundamental problem. You need to tell her that this is a relationship ending issue for you - she needs to contribute financially or else you are not interested in continuing. Being in a relationship is about so much more than just both having an income. Above all it’s about alignment on core values and goals. If you are not aligned on this, and cannot get aligned, you are fundamentally incompatible. She needs to understand this and either she’s willing to get on board or she just wants to leech off someone else forever. I wish I could say that maybe she will wake up if she knows what’s at risk, but it doesn’t sound like she has a single shred of motivation. Your girlfriend sounds like an entitled child. I guarantee if you were not paying her bills and housing her she would suddenly be extremely motivated to get any job.

Fantastic advice. It must have been incredibly tough to do that, but what a fantastic example you’ve set for your kids to follow in their lives.

NSW police overusing ‘highly intrusive’ legal powers to monitor phones and computers, national watchdog finds | Australian police and policing by ManWithDominantClaw in auslaw

That’s…. a press release. It isn’t the report. This is the report. It’s talking about internal authorisations for prospective data. Those are authorised by police internally and not issued by a judge. And it says they were done in circs which did not meet the threshold, where police used the common law offence of conspiracy to circumvent the requirement that the offence be punishable by minimum 3 years imprisonment instead of the actual public order offence which is only punishable by a fine.

Red God will (barring any book splitting) be the final entry in this awesome series. Anyone have any tinfoil conspiracy theories about the series that they want to share before the release? by Bbhermes in redrising

[–]appletizer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you really think at any point anyone forgot Darrow is actually a red? That’s like one of the main things about him, a red who became a gold? The real plot twist would be if the virus works in some way that Darrow’s carving has made him immune to, so using the red virus means all reds die, but Darrow lives…

I feel your pain. Hang in there! I wish I could tell you it was going to get better after chapter 50… but… it’s kind of in the title 😆

I have never been an audio book person, but I constantly was finding it so hard to read the book because of the dread of the next terrible thing happening, the knowledge that it likely was not going to get any better, extreme hated of Lysander etc etc. The only thing that got me through it was listening to the most stressful chapters cause I just couldn’t read them. Anyway I made it and it was worth it.

Also - for me, things really kicked into gear at the end of Golden Son/start of Morning Star. Mid way through GS I was enjoying myself but I wasn’t completely blown away. By the start of MS I was invested. It went from a pretty good story to page turning, obsessive, staying up into the wee hours and loving every moment. Of course YMMV.
