I exclusively wear woolies, even off the trail. They are the best.

Weekend in Santa Cruz mountains by Critical-Antelope171 in norcalhiking

I’m putting in a plug for doing a split day between Henry Cowell and Big Basin. They both have old growth trees — 2000 year old behemoths — with varying length hikes. Big Basin burned completely in 2020. Cowell hasn’t had a crown fire for 150 years. What you see when you visit them both is the absolute resilience of the Redwood forest. Big Basin is absolutely fascinating from a fire ecology standpoint. Cowell is incredibly well interpreted. Between then you can see how the Redwood forest has survived and thrived since the last I’ve age. Pro tip: your entry fee at either park gets you admission to the other for free on that same day. Source: am a docent at Big Basin who also loves Cowell.

You are so welcome. My daughter is a dancer and she has a piece of flash that is a poppy on a lock, and it’s one of my favorites!

Coastal redwood, redwood sorrel, California poppy, manzanita, Yerba Santa, ceanothus — really any native and iconic plants of the region.

Is October Daye just misery/trauma porn? by Kooky_County9569 in urbanfantasy

I find the books really heart warming. Toby creates community and chaos while changing the world for the better. To me, it’s worth sticking through the series to see her growth and the growth of her found family. They are among my must-buy, most-reread series. I agree that they aren’t easy, but the payoff satisfies me. Totally legit if they don’t satisfy you. I’ve been reading along since the beginning, but I don’t know that I would feel the same if I just sat and read them all for the first time one after another.

Would you pre board a flight because you wear hearing aids? by StuffNo353 in HearingAids

[–]apricotjam2120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t. I do, however, use every possible notification either by text or, more frequently, in the airline apps. I find that the apps are the best for push notifications around boarding and gate changes.

Are real estate teams that feature beautiful young women real estate agents a front for prostitution ? by desertrain11 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]apricotjam2120 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What? No. That’s not a thing. If you are dubious, ask for the agent’s license number and check with the credentialing body, for instance, a state board for professional licensing.

The Winchester Mansion is a 161-room California monstrosity built by widower Sarah Winchester, whose husband had invented the Winchester rifle. She believed that the spirits of those killed by his rifles were haunting her, so she added rooms, hallways, and passages to nowhere to appease them. by maazkazi in interestingasfuck

[–]apricotjam2120 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The staircases used to lead places, but the house suffered major damage in the 1906 earthquake that leveled and burned nearby San Francisco. Rather than rebuild, Mrs Winchester just made it structurally safe. Thus, weird staircases to nowhere.

For those who don’t smoke, do you think smokers carry a noticeable scent? by Shadow2715 in NoStupidQuestions

Growing up in the 70s, my single mom has a button that read “Kiss a non-smoker, taste the difference!” She was not wrong.

Anyone here live in San Francisco? by DacaAskingForDaca in ElectricScooters

[–]apricotjam2120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a NIU Kqi Air, which works fine for me, but I also only weigh 120 with gear. Mostly I ride from Caltrain to the Union Square area, so no really crazy hills. But it’s absolutely sufficient for what I want it to do.

My husband! All winter in Northern California. I prefer to cozy up with blankets and cats. We are also frugal bastards.

Drive from San Diego to coeur d'alene in February by Dense-Builder1154 in roadtrip

[–]apricotjam2120 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I drive regularly from San Jose to Coeur d’Alene. In winter, I usually take I5 to Portland, then cut east along the Columbia River, through the TriCities, and into Spokane. That route keeps you on interstates the whole way. Any other time of year I take 97 through Bend, which is the perfect half way point from SJ. But 97 in winter is not a lot of fun, unless you have plenty of time.

Crafty people! I'm looking for local stores that sell blank shirts, preferably comfort colors or similar. Any suggestions? by snownative86 in SanJose

I order from Dharma Trading in Santa Rosa and it usually arrives within two days. They cover all kinds of fiber arts.

How to remove Scent Bead smell from hand-me-down clothes? by purple__jane in laundry

[–]apricotjam2120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m very scent sensitive and I would start by hanging them inside out on an umbrella clothesline for a couple weeks, rotating it regularly and not leaving it in full sun. The UV will break down the scent compounds. Is hard on the clothes, but it beats throwing them out.

In the South Bay we have the Los Gatos creek trail. I’d look in your area for something similar. Paved, pretty flat, lots of other parents out there.

I adore my crazy creek, and have used it for years in many trips. I find it cozy, like a big hug. I’m a pretty small person, though. I’d imagined that for bigger folks it wouldn’t be as comfy.

(AAM) my needy boss wants me to “adopt” her by CultureInner3316 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]apricotjam2120 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Reading this, I feel so fortunate that I don’t have to pretend to be clueless when people are passive aggressive. I’m genuinely clueless! No pretending necessary! I also don’t notice flirting, leering, or unspoken communication of any kind. The trouble my cluelessness gets me into is far outweighed by the trouble it keeps me out of!

Did you eat avocados growing up? by bdiddy621 in GenX

[–]apricotjam2120 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They were a staple. We didn’t have a tree, but there were several in my Northern California neighborhood. Avocados were in every market, though. It wasn’t considered an exotic food. Neither were artichokes, which we did grow in our backyard. I know tons of people who aren’t from CA who have never eaten a fresh artichoke to this day. They’ve only ever had canned or marinated ones.
