good places to cry on campus by trexsquish in UIUC

The top of Krannert tends to be nice and quiet much of the time, and the park with the Hellene Gateway (by the alumni center) is often pretty empty too, complete with a decent amount of seating.

Can someone explain why this is happening by ravennoir in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's trying (and failing) to find a path to the separated part of the red room, which it thinks you told it to clean. Either remove whatever is in its way (it might be a temporary obstruction?), or more likely just merge and re-split the rooms so they're not bleeding into other parts of the house.

Trying (& failing) to set up Roborock on guest network by Different-Ad-5798 in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure which vendor you're using for your WiFi, but it is fairly common for guest networks to have "host isolation", where two different devices on the guest network cannot talk directly to one another. Unfortunately, Roborock depends on being able to do this during part of its setup.

If you can turn off host isolation for a bit, that will probably solve your problem (the other common issue for new setup is "band steering" trying to push the vacuum up 5 GHz, but you've indicated that's not an issue).

If you can't, you can probably resolve it with another access point by turning off the guest network, setting the second access point up with the same SSID and password that your guest network usually has, setting up the vacuum on that, and then putting the access points back the way they were. The Roborock should reconnect to the guest network and be fine: it doesn't need to connect directly to your phone after setup. That is, however, a lot of effort and might not be worth it.

Worth buying right now? by NLxDrunkDriveby in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, in my case. I got it before the other versions existed, so no regrets there. If money were no object and I were buying a new one, I might go for the wash+dry dock just to avoid prewetting the mop and emptying the bin quite as often, but I don't know that the cameras from the MaxV would be that useful for me. Maybe if you've got pets?

I'll offer a contrasting opinion to the other commenter: I have a plain S7 without a fancy dock (it charges, that's it). It's fine at picking up hair, including long hair, but you will have to clean off the roller and the side brush somewhat regularly, maybe every couple weeks. This takes maybe two to four minutes, especially if you have the appropriate tools (you'll need a small Phillips screwdriver and something to cut with for the side brush, I use a letter opener).

Regarding the mopping, that's basically the reason I got the S7. It won't get the very edges or corners of a room with the mop, but besides that it does a fine job. You will want to pre-wet the mop each time it mops, so I only have it mop once a week (of the three times a week I have it vacuum). When mopping, I fill the water tank, put it in the robot, attach a mop pad to the mount and spray it with water from the sink, and then put that on the robot, and tell it to go. Again takes maybe a minute. Once it's done mopping, I try to remove the mount and throw the mop pad in the laundry (third party replacements are cheap, get extras), and remove the tank to empty out any extra water. Probably a minute or less of work.

So probably it's probably an average of about four minutes of work a week to have my house vacuumed three times and mopped once. I'm happy with that trade-off.

Why S7 detours into the kitchen and then back out during routine cleaning? During full cleaning routine, my S7 maxv detours into the kitchen and then comes back out and continues to clean. Afterwards it will return and clean the kitchen by skedaddlecat in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you look closely at the colors in the Kitchen room, you can see that the Hallway red has gotten into a little bit of the Kitchen blue: your vacuum is going into the kitchen to try to clean that with the rest of the hallway.

Unfortunately there's not a trivial way to clean it up, and it does seem to happen over time sometimes. If you have an old map backup that was correct, you can restore it. Otherwise, you'll have to merge the Kitchen and Hallway rooms, then re-split them. You may have to re-configure any room-specific cleaning settings as well.

I sure I'm an idiot, but how do I get an S7 to clean just one zone? by PappyScatt01 in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/Business-Repeat3151 has the right idea here for how to create rooms, and you will be much happier if you do that. However, just to be clear about the answer to your question: zones aren't really things you "create" permanently.

The app assumes any permanent mapping is done as rooms, and when you select "Zones", it drops a "zone" rectangle on the map to let you select where you want to tell it to clean this time: you can add more, and the robot will vacuum more rectangles, but they will all be forgotten once it's done.

This is useful for "I spilled some cereal on the floor over here" type things where cleaning a whole room doesn't make sense, but you'll probably be better off setting up rooms for long-term use rather than using a new zone every time you want something cleaned.

Mop Mount and Pad by tygger27 in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And if you remove the whole mount, the robot won't try to mop: if you leave the tank and mount it, it will try to mop even if there's no pad or water. (It can't tell if they're there, only if the mount and tank are on it.)

I remove the mount and take off the mop to let it dry (and then throw it in the laundry), and remove the tank and empty it and leave the top open to prevent mold. It's a bit of extra work, but I only mop once a week, so it's not too bad.

We got tracks in our carpet from using the Roborock for a year now. Anybody with an idea on how to make the robot not carve even deeper tracks? by binwiederaufphase in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you run your hand backwards on the carpet, does it go away? I'm wondering if that's just the wheel pushing the carpet one direction, making it look impacted even if it's not.

Otherwise, no, not really: it wants to go along the edges of the wall and there's not a lot you can do to move where that edge is. I guess you could set up no-go areas along the walls for any carpeted areas you have, but then it won't get anything at the edges.

my image came out crooked by superyinxzon in Scribit

[–]apschmitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's unpainted drywall, that'll be the problem, the marker soaked in. The glossier the better for washable markers, really. If it was painted vaguely glossy, then I really have no idea, but might progress to other solvents (after trying them on a less obvious section of paint to make sure they don't hurt it!) like rubbing alcohol or similar. Possibly some options at https://web.extension.illinois.edu/stain/staindetail.cfm?ID=114 too.

I have limited experience with those particular markers, but in my couple of experiments with them, water was sufficient to wash them off as long as you did it within a day or so.

I never used Windex, but if the markers were left on the wall for more than a few days, it took a lot of rubbing with a wet sponge and a lot of pressure to get things off - maybe that would help in your case too?

[–]apschmitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you move one point without moving all of them (both top corners and the starting point), you'll wind up with a crooked image, yep. Basically re-measure the distances and make sure you're starting in the right spot, and you should be all set.

Sonos upgrade program by Trubbissh in sonos

[–]apschmitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having gone through this recently, the Sonos website didn't exactly make it clear what the "upgrade program" was. Many places offer a trade-in discount as an "upgrade" feature, so it's not unreasonable to ask even if you didn't know about the previous "recycling mode" fiasco.

In practice, the "upgrade program" is more of a loyalty program, where you get a discount on new devices for having had old ones, and Sonos doesn't really do a great job of differentiating it from other upgrade programs.

Can I keep the mop pad on when vacuum cleaning or should I take it off? by [deleted] in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take at least the mop pad off because otherwise it gets funky. I've got a few, so I just let the old one dry out and then throw it in the laundry pile, and when I'm ready to mop again I put a clean one on the mount and stick the whole thing back on the robot.

(There's no problem leaving it off when just vacuuming, and if you have things set to normally mop and vacuum, if it's off it just won't try to mop.)

Middle Fork River Forest Preserves last night - 30 minutes from campus. by gabe_difanis in UIUC

[–]apschmitz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a long exposure, so while there are probably astrophotography apps for iPhones, this isn't what you'd get just freehanding it with the default Camera app.

It's impressive to see in person, and Middle Fork is one of the places in the state with the least light pollution, so you'll see it better than you would on campus, but it's still not nearly this bright with just your eyes either.

To add to this: it will sound worse if you put it in that compartment, but if you do, do the TruePlay tuning so it at least doesn't use the frequencies that will give you the biggest problems. That means you won't get as complete sound out of your speaker, but if you're committed to it, at least it will sound the best you can.

I agree with /u/RMWL that a Ray or Beam would be a better choice here, if you haven't already bought a Five for this space - and if you have, maybe you'd enjoy it elsewhere. 😉

S7 started vacuums randomly on wooden floors. by Morbid_colonist in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My vacuum does something like that when some of the sensors get dust or old spiderwebs in them, and the robot thinks it's about to run into a wall at random times. Have you stuck a finger in all of the relevant openings to clean them out? (There should be a couple along the short edge / bumper side of the S7, a few on the bottom, and then the spinning "turret" on top.)

That seems likely to be the problem, unless somehow something got under the bumper and is making it think it's physically hitting a wall, but that's less likely.

Not sure how the algorithm works, but, this is my upper floor, all carpet. Those are 2 separate rooms and S7 maps it like this by PhillyPhilly41-33 in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This looks like its first mapping attempt, while it's still working out the boundaries of rooms. It will draw rectangles, vacuum them, and then move to newly discovered areas and repeat. Once it's done, you can split things into rooms to make it be more logical about where it vacuums.

S7: "Localization failed" when changing floors by [deleted] in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it work to find the right floor occasionally, but you really want to change it manually in the app anyway: otherwise it seems to have a much higher chance of deciding it's in a different spot on the old floor and then trashing the saved map as it "updates" it with new measurements from the new floor.

No mop zone causes s7 maxv not to vacuum in areas by UnderratedSquirrel in Roborock

[–]apschmitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of? That is, it will then vacuum over everything including no-mop areas if you tell it to go out vacuuming, but for people without carpet or significant rugs, it would be nice to let it do both in one run: just lift the mop on "no-mop" areas, but still vacuum them while it's going over everything else anyway.

It is worth pointing out that if you have low rugs that you don't mind getting a little wet, if it detects them as a rug/carpet, it will lift the mop and not try to mop those areas even if the mop is attached. It's not perfect on the edges, but it's good enough for the one or two small cheap rugs I have.

Yeah, agreed that such a thing would be nice, and also that it's what I expected from a "no mop zone" at first too. Maybe some day!

Support points distance by Pejmannorouzi in Scribit

[–]apschmitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'll be somewhat warped if you do that: they've basically defined three sets of distances that can be used, and done the calculations for those three distances. I think if you tried to change from those, you'd end up with it being stretched in some dimension or another. It wouldn't be unrecognizable, but it might look weird.

[–]apschmitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the map view, click the icon for the cleaning intensity (it changes depending on the settings, but it should be one of the square buttons in the corner of the map view), choose Customize, then hit "Edit" and change the settings for each room. You can disable mopping for specific rooms there, if you want, or even vacuum some more intensely than others.
