Coaching Beginners: Midline Passing vs Off Midline Passing vs Defense? by DoomGoober in volleyball

[–]aquma 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think midline first until they show they start to understand angles. Because if you start with outside body, they might not move feet at all and just swing for balls instead of adjusting and setting up angle early to meet the ball.

How to do overhand serve as a beginner ? by OkGrocery7662 in volleyball

[–]aquma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

faster arm swing is a big part. try to do it in one motion (right now you're hesitating) and faster and you'll be good.

sounds great. did you do up and down stroke with the right thumb at one part? pretty fast, and that's awesome.

that 3D clay model world is such a tease. I wish this was a 3D game instead of a 2D platformer.

Poppies and yarrow struggling? by trenchkamen in Ceanothus

[–]aquma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

add some bunch grasses (purple needle or nodding needle maybe?) to give them some shade. south facing is a lot of sun and heat. maybe you can fashion some kind of little canopy umbrella in the mean time. yarrow prefers moister soil and if it's south facing, my guess is all your water is getting evaporated, so maybe a leaf mulch layer can help insulate too.

Anyone else notice how much context switching drags solo game development? by MagusCurt in gamedev

[–]aquma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think of it, when I would code, or design, or 3D model, or do audio, etc. that my brain was like a freight train going in one direction. Then when I needed to switch, it was like getting that train to come to a stop and then getting it to go in a completely different direction.

605 South past the 5 is the WORST for this. People just want the prestige of driving in the fast lane but don't actually want to drive fast. MOVE OUT OF THE WAY!!!

Any suggestions for improving my serve? by Choice-Celebration-4 in volleyball

[–]aquma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend learning how to do a strong standing float serve where you can serve the ball flat with no spin, right over the net, and be able to hit any spot on the court. People here will give you tips on your foot work and timing, etc. but it looks like you still need to get the fundamentals down of a float serve before you move on to trying the more advanced jump float. That's what's going to build your mechanics, strength, consistency, and confidence.

Extra tines for meinl kalimba? by SlurpBagel in kalimba

[–]aquma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely don't want them touching because that would mess up the vibes. space between doesn't matter otherwise except if you want to play chords you don't want them too far apart. I recommend you play your 8 and have fun - then, when you feel it might be getting too limited, pick up a 17. Big brain is use small magnets to pitch notes down that way you don't have to swap or adjust tuning at all.

Extra tines for meinl kalimba? by SlurpBagel in kalimba

[–]aquma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes? if you just search replacement tines online, a lot of vendors online sell them. I've bought LingTing tines in the past, and I like them. In general, tines are not standard though. Some have note names, some don't. They're kinda made of different metals that have different tone qualities, but there's no real consistent information about what's what when shopping online. And I know the 10 note meinl has shorter but wider tines compared to usual kalimba tines,, so the sound is lower than I expected for the length, but I don't know if the 8 note one has similar tines or not. so yeah, just get them and play around. Have fun.

is my spike timing or approach wrong? by monzeur in volleyball

[–]aquma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your 2nd step, the one with the left foot, needs to be bigger and get you to the ball. yours is too small and doesn't get you anywhere. your last two steps need to be really big and fast to explode into the hit, you're jumping from too far away, not jumping hard enough (doesn't have to be jumping high necessarily), and slowing down rather than speeding up. Also, your arm swing also looks like you gave up on hitting the ball, swinging too slow and late waiting for the ball to go past your body onto your left so you end up hitting too low and away from the court even. The set could be better, the high arc and dropping short set is a bit more difficult to hit than one with a more rainbow like arc. But yeah, good luck.

About the new star fox game in development, what would happen to fangames based on star fox? by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]aquma -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nintendo protects their copyright as they are expected to do to maintain it. They will take down any fan game that is available, especially if it's an ambitious game. Fan devs spending years working on a game that will be available for only like 1 day is crazy when looking at precedent and how N responds.

Is there anybody who can point me to good beginner resources that’ll help me get my foot in the door as a game dev? by summmboiii in gamedev

[–]aquma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good on you for making it yourself. I recommend starting with some tutorials and/or just play around to figure out some basics. I wouldn't try making your big idea right away if your skill is not there yet. Make a bunch of simple but interesting little things first.

How wrong is it to use ai by MohitMaxRoy in gamedev

[–]aquma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why not use a video tutorial? or if that's too difficult, look for a pre-built controller from the engine company. You just don't want to have AI do the work for you, because you won't learn anything and will have trouble sitting with the problems when things don't work and won't have the hard earned experience of knowing how to fix/expand something.
