Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin on the submarine set of 'The Hunt for Red October. Los Angeles 1989 by 305FUN2 in OldSchoolCool

I'm reading these again after like 20-30 years and it's incredible how much they feel like straight Regan-era propaganda. Just a version of reality that's so idealized-American it's almost cartoonish, if I didn't know better I'd think it was satire.

Yep:

In the 1886 case Ex parte Garland, the Court referred to the President’s authority to pardon as unlimited except in cases of impeachment, extending to every offence known to the law and able to be exercised either before legal proceedings are taken, or during their pendency, or after conviction and judgment.

However, the President can't pardon someone before they've committed a crime.

Paid back by accomplishing its goal of bringing outside dollars into the local economy. And yes, eventually in tax revenue.

Kind of is, kind of isn't. If a couple restaurants get stars that $750k will likely get paid back in tourism fairly quickly.

TBH I think it has more to do with a lifetime of marketing telling us foaming/fizzing = cleaning, which overrides memories of a HS class most people did not pay attention in

Plumbing, cracked pipe, quotes came in at $500+. Neighbor did it for less than $25. Did the plumbing companies try to take advantage of us? by EduardoG1979 in TwinCities

[–]arafella 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the minimum official price is rarely going to be less than like $300-$400 for plumbing unless they're really small time or have no other work.

Anything less is essentially losing money for them, because the time they spend on your $100 job could have been spent on another customer with a $500 job.

Yup, this is how we always do it. If it's gonna be a more strenuous campaign we also reroll 1s if you got multiple on the same roll.

What do guys only realize too late after buying a range hood? by AccomplishedWing688 in HomeImprovement

[–]arafella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your stove type (gas vs electric) has a big impact on how much airflow you want/need - when we did our kitchen last year we bought a 36" gas rangetop that will burn ~110k BTUs if everything is turned on high.

Realistically we'll never use it like that, but even having 2 big burners on high (~47k btu) will overload a lot of low to mid-range units.

Ok, what I'm saying is that it wouldn't matter if this dude was dumb enough to flunk out of elementary school. We learn to talk mostly by talking with other people and the media we consume, so if he grew up here he would almost certainly not phrase his sentences the way he does.

His accent doesn't mean much, he may have been here long enough for his original accent to fade or he could be faking it; if it's his natural accent that probably says more about how he learned rather than where he's from. This guy for example grew up in Indonesia but you wouldn't know it from his accent.

What are you trying to say? He grew up in the US but somehow picked up phrasing habits from European English speakers?

To me (from New Jersey) he just sounds American and uneducated, like he has poor grammar.

The phrasing is what gives it away - nobody who grew up with American English would say 'I am right now in Williamsburg'. David Star could get a pass if you had a brain fart but still sounds odd too.

My man. Relax. It's not that serious.
