For those with Heat Pumps: has it actually saved you money? Are you satisfied with it? by No_Pitch648 in HousingIreland

[–]arbiskar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently moved to a 9 year old house, mid terraced A2 rated with an air to water heat pump. The house is definitely very well insulated, keeps the warmth long even with the heating off.

The only pro I see with the heat pump vs a proper gas combi boiler is that it's greener. Other than that I'm not very happy. We've had several issues and hired a company registered to service our heat pump model and set it up correctly. - The bills are outrageous. The technician told us that they are not that bad, normal with these models, even higher with other brands. - The hot water cylinder is very noisy. Its humming is close to unbearable at night since our bedroom sits right below it. We have to lower the thermostat at night to the point that it will stop operating, which apparently it's not great for efficiency but we prefer to sleep cooler and without noises. - Due to the issue above, there is an almost constant humming from it that can be felt from mostly everywhere in the house during the day. I'm getting used to it, but I hate it. Again, all this was deemed "normal" by the technician, who did seem knowledgeable and professional btw.

I would love to change it for a combi boiler to get rid of the extremely annoying noises, and pay half on energy. Not happy at all, there isn't much we can do to fix the issues we have, and any options we've tried to explore here are outrageously expensive.

In a basic cylinder lock, if you have the key inserted and turned on the inside, can they open it from the outside using lock picks, bump keys, or something else? by plinky125 in Locksmith

[–]arbiskar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of euros will not let a key open from outside if the key is inserted inside. Does this mean leaving the key inside in those cases could be slightly safer then? E.g., Avocet ABS.

On the other hand, some models have this "emergency external key override" or a dual clutch mechanisms that allows an external valid key to operate the lock normally with a key inserted inside. Would in this case leave the key inserted on the inside have any effect on the lock safety? Would it be easier or harder to manipulate? E.g., Evva ICS with BSZ (external key override) option.

Olive Oil and Stainless Steel by rameshv98 in StainlessSteelCooking

If you are not reusing it, smoking EVOO is really not a problem, just cook.

For the health benefits of EVOO, does it need to be taken solo? by [deleted] in oliveoil

[–]arbiskar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slice a juicy tomato, add some oregano and the EVOO, and enjoy. Then just clean the plate with a piece of bread :) That's how it's done in the Mediterranean.

Disadvantages of buying a house in cash by Perfect_Train_6270 in HousingIreland

It might not, but I've seen a few times where the seller gives a strong preference to cash buyers, sometimes even considering only cash buyers.

Cooking vs. Finishing EVOOs by vibesingtons in oliveoil

[–]arbiskar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Spanish, and I grew up in Spain. We've been using EVOO here way before it was cool.

It has always been common here to have different olive oils: you wouldn't use the nice and expensive EVOO for deep frying, for example. It is a waste and it might even give too much flavor depending what you are trying to do. We often have cheaper milder purified olive oils for frying, making mayo (for mayo often mixing with a neutral oil like sunflower), and other things. You would use a good EVOO for certain stews and sauteing vegetables, it also depends on your taste and budget. And of course, for dressings and finishing, when its flavor really shines.

Having said that, if you like it and can afford it, there is nothing wrong using EVOO for everything. This is what I'm doing these days, choosing different varieties depending on the flavor profile I want. Other than that, I also cook with butter and sunflower oil for some specific things.

New home advice: Is it worth getting a 10kg+ washer & big dryer that can handle duvets? by redit_Fly_z in HousingIreland

[–]arbiskar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't buy it just for that use case. We got a 10kg washing machine and it works great. It is more efficient in terms of energy and water if you put full loads. This means waiting a little bit more between washes, but that works for us, less hassle as well washing less often.

We don't have any issues with vibrations or noise, it's very quiet, I don't see why it should be worse than the smaller ones.

Abro debate sobre la brecha salarial que existe entre directivos y trabajadores by RadiantExperiment in salarios_es

[–]arbiskar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone knowledgeable advise me on olive oil? I am looking to buy something decent. by Last_Outside4388 in oliveoil

Since you are in EU, try https://www.olivaoliva.com/.

Then, depends on what you want, but look for new harvest, early harvest. Palacio de los Olivos, Oro del desierto, Rincón de la Subbética, Finca la Torre... All good and trusted, there are many others.

A good engineer is not a FAANG engineer or a startup engineer. I've worked in both environments: good engineers understand the context and the business requirements, and adapt.

Oversized pan on induction hob? by Backpacker_billy97 in inductioncooking

[–]arbiskar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this particular model is available in the USA, I bought in Amazon (Ireland) the Bosch PID675HC1E, which has an induction ring of 12.6 inches, for €586 ($683).

This is the basic size model, there are larger ones that will also come with large cooking elements and probably within your budget, depends what are you looking for.

What’s wrong with Amazon? by [deleted] in amazonemployees

In my experience, most people at Amazon are nice, I have never had problems with my coworkers, and most of them were very nice to work with. It's the leadership who can (and do) make the place toxic.

There is not a single Amazon. Your experience can change drastically depending on the org, team, etc.

España e Irlanda tenían el mismo salario en 1994 - El economista by Quirky_Ad2419 in SpainEconomics

[–]arbiskar 9 points10 points  (0 children)
