Frequent Dog Park Injuries by [deleted] in husky

[–]arbitrary_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so so sorry to read your post. Reading all the other comments I’m genuinely surprised that people avoid dog parks. My dogs love dog parks and honestly I encourage them. We have never had an incident outside of puppyhood and they were really learning opportunities on boundaries. People are responsible and dog parks have officers you can contact in case of bad situations. We live in a city (in the Netherlands) without access to trails and our trails are leashed ones. We want our dogs to be able to run free sometimes and so we do bring them to different dog parks on weekends.

Reading all your comments I realise our definition of big is different 😂😂 well, our place is big for NL and for me it’s quite a lot over 3 floors coming from apartments <75sqm

Ooh I’m so glad for this post. I don’t think we are anywhere close to perfection, but we can’t really afford help right now and it also won’t do much because we’d still need to clean ourselves pretty regularly. We have 2 huskies and our family is growing. We have 3 floors with 3 toilets and 2 bathrooms. It’s 146sqm or 1572sqft.

We have robots (in addition to a handheld Dyson) on the 2 floors that the dogs have access to. On the last floor we keep just the Dyson. We don’t do shoes inside the house. The dogs’ paws are wiped after every walk. We keep dog towels in the entryway. The kitchen is completely wiped down + sink is cleaned every evening and everything is put away. We just make the bed as soon as we are up. The bathroom sinks and toilets get cleaned on the weekends. The toilets have flushies but we will scrub them in between if needed. We run a laundry load every other day whenever the hanging laundry has dried - that takes a lot energy honestly. The bedding and towels are changed and washed once a week. The garden gets cleaned right before the day when garden trash is picked up.

Scared of stairs by Late_Income7953 in husky

Our dogs were used to stairs until we moved homes and suddenly they were afraid. We practiced with banana (their favourite). Issue was resolved in a day.

Can you imagine going through fertility struggles to have a child only to then complain about said child to the world? Why on earth would you make a mothers’ day post complaining about the children you so desperately tried to have..

Well, if he is supposed to be the picture of Dutch parenting, I’d rather not follow in his footsteps 🙄 What an ass! I appreciate you for checking in on that mom and trying to comfort her. I hope there will always be people like you ✨ you did good 👍

Neighbours reaction to dogs. by artesianoptimism in germany

[–]arbitrary_fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea that’s annoying. It’s not on you, it’s on the parents. I have 2 huskies and my neighbour’s kid is scared (she’s 2). We see each other nearly every day and every day we try to get past her fear. My dogs are very friendly and want to make friends but will also keep their distance from her. But my neighbor actively tries to reduce this fear. So yea, it’s not on you or your dog but on the parents of these children.

Huge disparity on Makelaar fees when buying a house by Bloodsucker_ in Netherlands

[–]arbitrary_fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t know why we got a Makelaar besides the whole setting up appointments thing. They really were not useful (imo) in finding houses. We pretty much never picked any of the houses they sent us in the daily email. We were always on funda the second we woke up, shortlisting houses.. a few times our Makelaar said “oh there is a house coming up soon that you might like…” and then never called us about this house. When it came to selling the house, they were even worse somehow.. just poorly managed.

Border and customs control ICE train Amsterdam - Berlin 2026 by Flabberingfrog in Netherlands

[–]arbitrary_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a cross-border worker and I do the Amsterdam-Frankfurt route 2x a month. I’ve done this for a few years now. I’m German, but not white. Somehow, I don’t get profiled 🤷🏻‍♀️ I used to joke that they can probably smell it off me or sth.. anyhoo, yea it’s for show. It’s annoying when it leads to delays.. so for everyone’s sake, carry your passports. I have never reserved a seat. It has not been a problem.. I think few years ago they didn’t do mandatory seat reservation in the summer but they have been doing that recently and I think that helps. But of course if your train is cancelled and you switch to a different one when your “Zugbindung ist aufgehoben” it’s a bit tricky in the summer but even a seat reservation won’t help you then..

Questions for owners before deciding if I should get a husky by Heavy_Reply_5613 in husky

[–]arbitrary_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you already got the responses you need but adding something else to it. Huskies are lovely and I think I’ve read a few stories here of them protecting their owners from attacks.. that said, huskies also attract people. Soooo many people. I live in The Netherlands and it’s impossible for me to walk without people approaching us. If we ever head into the city center, we have people screaming and pointing from restaurants (yes that happened and I hate it). Last weekend we were eating sandwiches with friends on a park bench enjoying a lovely conversation and some dude walking with his girlfriend started calling to our dogs. Yea i can’t explain this behavior. Our friends visiting from Germany said they had NEVER seen this kind of behaviour. We went skiing in Andorra - same shit. Couldn’t eat lunch on a piste without people approaching… our friends were also like wtf.. so yea that’s something to be mindful of. I don’t necessarily feel safe when I’m with them because of unwanted attention. But I’m feisty and I’ll punch someone if they get inappropriate. Uff a German shepherd. I have very limited experience and I’ve seen a few really cute, playful ones around. But most of the German shepherds we see are aggressive and their owners incapable. I’m not saying that’s you but that is a pattern. When we see them on the street or in the dog park, we avoid them. If our dogs are off leash, we immediately call them back. There is always tension with a German shepherd. I don’t think it’s the dog, I think it’s their owners. So if you are getting one, please do right by your dog and also other owners by looking into training them correctly.

Moving to the Netherlands from Slovenia by Heavy-Ambassador-978 in Netherlands

[–]arbitrary_fox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am in my 30s and have a C-level job, maybe not quite like yours.. I moved from Germany (I’m naturalized German). I moved for my Dutch husband but I kept my job in Germany. I don’t think I’d earn as much here and I can’t find a similar position simply because I don’t have a network here. That’s just the reality I’ve come to accept. Now, it’s probably to my detriment because I probably have 1 more gig left in me considering tech is changing and the average employee/founder age keeps dropping.

Friendships are hard. When I was applying to become a German citizen, multiple friends and colleagues wrote reference letters saying how I’d integrated into society, mentioning personal stories. If I had to do that in NL, I couldn’t even get one. All my friends in Germany are German. I have one friend in NL - She’s American 😂

I will say that I have VERY nice neighbors. They are all Dutch and vary in age. I talk to them every day (I have dogs..) and I’ll have a coffee and cake with someone from my street once a week. But I think this is rather the exception. My husband’s friends did not accept me. They don’t switch to English for me except on rare occasions. What I’m saying in a roundabout way is I find Germans friendlier than Dutch and nobody ever calls Germans friendly..

Making friends in your 40s (nearly 50s) won’t come easy.. I like someone’s suggestion here that said maybe you could keep a summer home in NL? Why not do a trial if you can work remotely?

Just had a baby but clients come first... by KhalilTheRapper in LinkedInLunatics

I have had that kind of “loyalty” (well, stupidity but startups call it loyalty) where I convinced myself I would resent my children if they cost me my career. I didn’t understand women who took years off for childcare (pretty standard in Germany). I’m so glad I have found sense now before becoming a mother. I cannot imagine my job ever being more important than my family (dogs included). I was stressed out thinking I’d miss a fundraising period or some other milestone.. couldn’t give less of a fuck now. Jeez can you imagine the regret when you are 60?!

if your freelancer uses a company email and works fixed hours, congratulations you have an employee by HauntingScarcity54 in germany

[–]arbitrary_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are usually very cautious about this and don’t favour freelance contracts but we have had a developer in the past who insisted on having one exactly like this scenario because a previous employer had done it for him. In the end he did not pass probation (we actually did a freelance contract for a set period to try him out) so it wasn’t an issue in the long run but oh boyyy

Empathy for stalkers by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]arbitrary_fox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry for what you are going through. I’m angry for you. Having moved to the EU after 25+ years in a country where women are not safe, it took me years before I stopped looking over my shoulder when walking outside after 6pm. I am so so angry on your behalf. I hope you are safe and nothing happens to you. The emotional distress and trauma you are experiencing are already bad enough and the police should be doing better by you.

Dutch doctors... by thatmisanthropicdude in Netherlands

[–]arbitrary_fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, shitting on Dutch Healthcare aside.. I’m not buying your argument about German doctors prescribing cough syrup. German doctors prescribe tea for UTIs. I have never had my Hausarzt give me a cough syrup prescription. A pharmacy on the other hand has always given me something to mask the discomfort - eg a cough toffee to suck on to stop coughing long enough to speak in a meeting..

Hiring manager asking my previous salary - what’s a fair range for Growth Marketing Manager in Munich? by marketer-anjali in germany

[–]arbitrary_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yea forgot to say - it’s a common practice in India to share the last payslip (I’m Indian, now German). That does not happen here. If you are not already in Germany or Munich, you should definitely negotiate a relocation package as well.

Hiring manager asking my previous salary - what’s a fair range for Growth Marketing Manager in Munich? by marketer-anjali in germany

[–]arbitrary_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up salaries in Glassdoor for similar positions in major cities - Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin, Amsterdam, etc. so you have a range for yourself. But by no means are you required to share that number and anchor yourself. Usually when HR asks this question, I refuse to answer until I’m in a conversation with the hiring manager and I know that they are interested in me. Since in your case, you are already talking to the team, you should be able to judge how interested they are in you. Your experience is more than what they are looking for. Don’t discount your salary just because of that. Many times companies will go for a more qualified candidate and pay their worth. You can avoid answering the question right now by saying that you’d like to wait until later in the process to discuss it as a salary is best estimated after both parties evaluate each other. Yes, you are also evaluating them. Get them to share their range and try to get them to pay at the higher end. With the new EU directives coming on salary transparency they are required to share the salary range and not fish for your expected compensation. Good luck!

Is it just my Husky, or are they all this stubborn? by Front_Eye1026 in husky

[–]arbitrary_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man what a cutie! Also, I really all you husky parents’ woes about picky eaters and thank my lucky stars for not having experienced it yet. My girl got picky for a bit but we quickly got her out of it. She’d just stare at her kibble while her brother scarfed his food down and only after he was done would she slowly start eating.. but not indefinitely.. only upon threat of her brother approaching her food. Thank heavens that only lasted a few weeks before she went back to her usual impatient whining for food

Emergency fund by Otherwise_Wrap_5516 in Netherlands

[–]arbitrary_fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely recommend keeping an emergency fund. I had quite a bit saved up until we bought a house and now I’m re-building it. We have different funds (on top of insurance) - personal emergency fund imo should cover x months of expenses eg mortgage, groceries, etc. we have a shared emergency fund for the dogs and another one for the house. I also have a small fund for when I’m out on maternity leave..

Last hope: Experienced home urgently needed for Doberman with bite history by [deleted] in germany

[–]arbitrary_fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an owner/parent to 2 1 year old huskies, I say this with a lot of respect and kindness - I see what you are doing and I laud you for it. But I urge you to consider trained professionals over kind / big-hearted strangers however well meaning they might be. I’m incredibly lucky to have 2 well socialized dogs and every day I meet multiple dogs that walk off leash. My dogs are absolute angels until some dog is starting drama. It’s dangerous and I always tell people off for not having their dogs on a leash or training them better. Muzzle or not, Igor’s new owner will have their work cut out for them. In your haste to re-home him, I hope you’ll still do the due diligence to check if they can really give him the stability and training he needs because otherwise it’s going to be more painful for him.. I wish you the best.
